We discount road risk from everyday activities because we believe we are in control (half true) but also because most of us haven't been involved in a serious road accident so we believe them to be things which happens to other people. But we've all had flu, and indeed we expect to catch something every so often, but apart from feeling a bit ropey for a couple of days most of us get over it quite quickly and crack on, albeit whilst mainlining Lemsip. So faced wih something as easy to catch as flu, but with potentially fatal consequences for far more of us than normal, we dont dismiss the risk as easily because suddenly it isn't something which happens to other people. So people do crazy things like refusing to send their kids back to school next month because its too risky but take them for a far riskier 40 mile drive for 'exercise' instead. The general public does not perceive risk logically, its as simple as that. What I don't get is taping off every other parking space! Your car isn't going to catch anything and unless everybody tries to get in and out of their cars at the same time, surely it's overkill !

  3. SM42 is correct, I've misidentified it, sorry. The LMS 5 plank in Larkin is a D1667 with the steel underframe. Sorry all, I should have known that, I built that very one from a Cambrian kit !
  4. The only one not likely to be still around is the van, most were converted to VB between 1959-61. The others would still be around but in increasingly smaller numbers. You have references above for the Toad B and LNER 6 plank (the one referenced by SM42 is indeed the one in the first Twitter link), the 'mineral' in the second twitter link is in fact another 6 plank. Use of unfitted 5 and 6 plankers to move ash and clinker from loco sheds seems to have been quite common. I'm not sure which diagram the Bachmann LMS 5PO represents but there is one on the opposite page to the LNER 6 plank in "Pre-Nationalisation Freight Wagons on BR", another Don Rowland pic of a D1666 wagon in very neat grey with black panels at Granton in 1962. Caption states "...they served their new owners well and were used until the early 1960s when most non-fitted general purpose stock was phased out. Some were scrapped after being used briefly for loco coal and others went to various engineers' departments where they can still be found" (written in 1977). The LMS built tens of thousands of unfitted 5 planks, these are the ones Bob Essery (or might have been Don Rowland again) calculated that to be stricty accurate you need several hundred of for every loco on your layout.
  5. Of no help at all to the OP, but the buffers and several yards of rail for the loading dock behind the war memorial were uncovered when the archaeologists were test pitting in what was by then the West Offices car park prior to conversion to council offices.

  7. Not if it remains in the ownership of the same body (ie the ROSCO) as it hasn't been disposed of. It might cause it to be de-designated though. Designaton is a way of the preservation/museum sector claiming first dibs, its not like listing a building. 'Caroline' , for example, is designated because it was used in Charles and Di's honeymoon train but it's much modified from what it was in 1981.
  8. If it's an LMS shed then Ratio do a Stranraer coaler, like a cenotaph but smaller and more useful for a smaller shed. You'll need a road for the coal wagon alongside it, you could use the space gained to put a 4 road shed where you have the original coaling stage.

I remember posting the details of the horrid Northern purple scheme on an old version of the forum, unfortunately I doubt the details of the NS schemes survive in Northern's archive largely because a) there isnt an archive and b) anything on paper will have been binned when we left Main HQ. The Northern Spirit logo was a logo, not a font, you can get close to it with some of the rounded fonts but not an exact match. Arial or Helvetica sounds about right for ATN. Arriva turquiose started out as Pantone 321 but i believe it changed at some point. I can ask a couple of people but the person who would know off the top of his head is no longer with us.
  10. The RAF have been making the most of it too, we've had two Atlas C1s flying circuits and bumps at LBA in the last few weeks, one went on to Prestwick to do the same, the other went to Robin Hood / Finningley. As a result of which a very large Revell kit is headed this way :-)
  11. On CCE and S&T vehicles built or repainted between 1960ish and 1964ish, before the change to olive green. There has been considerable discussion here and elsewhere about how many wagons were actually painted gulf red though, it appears to have been very much a minority.
  12. It's 'Red Enamel' according to information posted by (I think) HMRS Paul the last time this was asked. Anything between Humbrol 19 Bright Red for ex works (which I think is available in a can) and 174 Signal Red for 'in service but a bit weathered' wont be far off. Absolutely not Gulf Red or coaching stock Crimson (carmine). EDIT - found it Varnished on the cranes and coaches so not too faded.
  13. WYPTE stations were, as stated, timber with Acme plywood decking. None will be 2.5m wide as Acme boards were only 8' long so 2.4m max. The standard until 1996 was 6'0" minimum (1.8m) then 2m and now 2.5m. SYPTE tended to go for cross wall and plank using Bison beams with tarmac over but they built far fewer stations and spent most of their subsidy on buses (10p ? max adult fare at one time, it was definitely 2p for kids). Some of the WYPTE stations are now on their third deck, the SYPTE concrete ones are only just starting to need repairs 30 years on.
  14. Certainly is still there. One of the pway fell in it at 3am one morning in 1993 while we were simultaneously trying to deal with a failed tamper and a dropped pager. This is a fascinating project, really enjoying it !
  15. Coaling at Loch Tay (small loco shed beyond the terminus at Killin, no facilities at the junction) was done by shovelling out of a 16ton mineral parked on the adjacent line right up until closure in the 1960s.
  16. Arriva turquoise used to be Pantone 321, I know thats an ink standard rather than a paint standard but that's what was specified for publicity material. It might at least give you a lead on a RAL or BS equivalent.

  19. The point rodding to the trap in Rivercider's pic goes along the left hand cess, under both lines and appears behind the Warship. Normally worked off the same lever as the connection the main line, as for a crossover.
  20. Because they were the most labour-intensive to renumber as it required more than a signwriter and a couple of tins of paint, and were therefore the obvious fleet to leave alone.
  21. Correct. The disinfectant was a by-product of the coke making process, the shiny paper was necessary to stop it disintegrating when the 'medication' was added to it. It was supplied in bulk to the sorts of organisations where price was more important than whether you could actually wipe your backside with it, triumph of marketing over practicality. It made quite good emergency tracing paper. I doubt very much whether anyone would actually have tried to steal it.
  22. DBC have inherited the trademarks trademarked by BR for the Railfrieght logos, the filing dates are all 1988. They presumably transferred to Loadhaul/Transrail and whatever the other one was, then to EWS, then to DB. The freight companies were bought outright, not franchised, so their IP went wih them. Interesting about the 313. If NSERS did own the trademark on the lgo by then, I wonder if it still applies if the stickers were old stock found in a drawer on a depot somewhere ?
  23. The goods yard throat is trapped under the St Couans Rd bridge, its just off the right hand side of the pic at the bottom of p157 in Swan. The long west siding is also trapped, visible (just) on p160. Both the goods loop behind the platform and the branch platform itself were trapped at the east end despite the platform line being a passenger line. The horse dock on the down side was trapped by its own headshunt. I cant work out to paste links on a phone but look in the trackplans on Signalbox.org, the 1955 plans for both boxes are on there, the track layout didnt change much in that respect. Ballast appears to have been stone on the main lines by 1935 with ash or something similarly fine in the yard.

Shim it with a bit of thin sheet styrene or microstrip, it's much easier to make a slightly narrow floor fit a wide body in this way than trying to shave slivers off a slightly wide floor and keep everything square. Generally 'underframe only' kits were designed as part of a full kit and usually fit those properly, not necessarily the case if you're trying to fit them to something else. In your case the Red Panda chassis fits their shocvan and sand tippler kits 'as is', and the Parkside 12' chassis fits their various large mineral wagons. If you don't have offcuts of sheet styrene then use paper or card, fix it with cyano.

By the time you've decided whether something qualifies to be in the new subforum by being a light railway but not a Big Four light railway or a quasi-light railway but definitely not a tramway unless it was a tramway which was operated as a de facto light railway, most of your potential contributors will have posted it somewhere else.
