  1. Hello all I bought two RSB chassis kits many years ago. They were the P1 and K3: The P1 was supplied with a O2 valve gear fret and the K3 with a V2 fret. The P1 wheel base was the same as the O2, but the K3 wheel base was 6 in longer. The P1 chassis fits a Hornby Flying Scotsman body quite well. The K3 will fit the Wills K3 body, but has never been used, as the SEF K3 chassis is one of the best kit chassis around. As the K3 wheel base has the same spacing for the front two axles, it would be possible to replace the supplied coupling rods with Gibson rods to give a scale chassis spacing. Malcolm
  2. The tender has been advertised for several months, like many of his kit built locos. He obviously doesn't believe in promoting quick turnover. Perhaps he spends his time playing with his Studebakers. Thane of Fife PS first noted in November 2013
  3. How much of the fee is a Roal Mail Handling fee? The last time I got caught was for £30 of CDs and they charged me £9 to collect £6 VAT. Thane of Fife
  4. I followed tips from these forums and used Wilko Dot4 braked fluid to remove paint and it worked well with an overnight soaking. I have used 10% caustic soda before and the brake fluid is a lot simpler and possibly more efficient. Thane of Fife
  5. I spotted this offering, with a very poor pic. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/00-4mm-FINE-SCALE-DJH-KIT-BUILT-GCR-GNR-NER-LNER-4-4-4-RAVEN-TANK-LOCOMOTIVE-/252034793919?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item3aae71c1bf I would be quite interested in bidding for this loco, so I tried to ask a question and if possible ask for more pics, as these locos are often constructed with the cylinders jutting out. I would also like details of the wheels and motor, but the vendor is not accepting questions. As a result he will not be accepting bids from me. Thane of fife
  6. Thanks everyone for the replies. I have noticed that the Austin Seven boiler was G7 3/4 S. Does this mean it was the same as the 4F boiler, but lnoger? Thane of Fife
  7. Does anyone know the size of the G7S boiler as fitted to the 4F and 2P classes? I am planning a 4F and wondered if the boiler could be used with other loco classes. Thane of Fife
  8. And now.....for the ninth time: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/191-Ian-Kirk-8848-LNER-Sleeper-First-kit-/351456900558?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item51d476b5ce Do you think the starting price is too high? Thane of fife
  9. Do people check the value of what they're buying?? A used set of Brassmaster's axle spacing gauges have just gone for £7.00 + £1.85 postage, a total of £8:85. They can be bought brand new for £5.00 + £1.50 postage, a total of £6.50. This is, according to my maths, £2.35 cheaper. Thane of Fife
  10. Il Grifone said: It looks like the tender from one of their Midland locomotive kits. (Known for their inability to pull the skin off a rice pudding - not unlike their prototypes). One IIRC was a 2-4-0, the other I can't remember (0-6-0?).) The loco looks like a Will's kit, with motion from bullhead rail, as was once the custom. The cylinders slope the wrong way! (Of course, proper railways keep them horizontal, if possible.....) I don't think that Wills made a Shire, but McGowan did. Later to be followed by a DJH kit. I did buy a DJH "professionally built" (by Cra**y) kit on a Comet chassis with Romford wheels and a Dave Alexander tender, for a good price (less than the cost of a wheelset). In real life several of the tenders went to new V2's, and were replaced by older versions, so perhaps it happened in model form as well. Thane of fife
  11. But it was constructed by an EXPERT, Tony, he obviously knows more about locomotives than I do. I hadn't realised that Derby built Shires. I also don't think the RCTS and Yeadon knew. Thane of Fife
  12. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VINTAGE-Ks-KIT-BUILT-LNER-CLASS-04-1-No-6206-2-8-0-LOCO-TENDER-/400764849966?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item5d4f724f2e What price for an old Kays O4? Oh...It comes from the Lake District. It wouldn't fit an LNER layout as the top feed and piston tails rods were removed before numbers were displayed on the cab, and the numbers are the wrong pattern. I wonder (ha ha) if he's had any offers. Thane of Fife
  13. Both locos mentioned by Matt the Southerner are Private listings. I always think the vendor has something to hide behind Private listings. I may be wrong but I never bid on one. It looks like other people feel the same as nobody has bid on either loco. Thane of Fife
  14. http://www.ebay.co.u...=item25a5fe83c7 £4.99 + £3.50 postage. £8.49 for a few bits of rubbish? Thane of fife
  15. Was there ever a resin body for the W1? I have seen one for the hush-hush mentioned on this site a while ago. I think it was by Jaycraft. Dean Sidings did a resin body for the rebuilt W1. Thane of fife
  16. This resin bodied LNER W1 has just sold for £460. Good luck to the vendor. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/371311255741?_trksid=p2060353.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT I have a South East Finecast hush-hush with Markits wheels, and a Mashima 1830 motor. It has a small amount of lead added and will pull the side off a house. Perhaps I should sell mine, and build another, because even at today's prices the kit plus extra would only cost me £200. Perhaps, I should construct the rebuilt W1 to the same spec, and sell the pair. Thane of fife
  17. Portescaps were great motors when the were first released, but alternate motors were mostly X04 types. I now find that a Mashima can driving through a High Level Gearbox gives silent powerful performance at reasonably low current. I have replaced most of my X04/MW005/Kays motors and some of my Portescaps with the above combination. I do still have an old Kays O4 powered by the original Mk1 motor and it's quite powerful, but draws a lot of current and is noisy. Perhaps, it's now time to sell the Portescaps on Ebay as they are fetching good prices. Thane of fife
  18. Sometimes I've notived that an item starts at a very high price then when there are no bidders, it gets relisted at a lower price, and again and again until it attracts bids. Other start at a high price and relist at the same start when there are no bidders, and again and again. There are dealers who list items at a high BIN price and they remain listed for over a year. Surely a businessman looks for high regular turnover, not the occasional windfall. Thane of fife
  19. Here we have for sale a Kirk Sleeper first for the EIGHTH time. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/191-Ian-Kirk-8848-LNER-Sleeper-First-kit-/351380787712?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item51cfed5200 Will it sell this time?? Thane of fife
  20. A very interesting thread as I'm having fun bashing old Triang/Hornby Clerestorys. I seem to have come to the same methodology regarding the roofs and other techniques. The possible variations are endless, and the addition of microstrip to represent the panelling opens up a great choice of vehicles. The great advantage is that acceptable coaches can be produced on a shoestring. Thane of Fife
  21. I will be interesting to see if the seller gets any bids on the coaches. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/K005-Pheonix-BSL-coach-kit-LMS-Stanier-62-corridor-brake-composite-/111597829261?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item19fbbfbc8d He has listed a Kirk kit for £18.50 plus £4.00 postage about six times and not got any bids. Perhaps he could sell if he started at a lower price. Then he could get his money working. I am not a businessman, but think that selling three items at each £2 profit is better than one item at £5 profit. Thane of fife
  22. Happy new year to all In my trainspotting day of the middle to late 1950's, a Z class 0-8-0T was tried on the Holmethorpe sidings, but was moved on after a week, and I never got to see it. Thane of fife
  23. Merry christmas all I think the SECR class H is still available from South Eastern Finecast. The fact that they are scarce on Ebay probably means that everyone wants to keep the ones they have. Thane of fife
  24. It seem that the vendor of: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Hornby-DOUBLO-PRE-WAR-STYLE-ENGING-SHEDS-AND-MESS-HUT-/131380779021?pt=UK_Trains_Railway_Models&hash=item1e96e7980d has twice refused to complete sale on items as NOT ENOUGH WAS BID. Is he one of those who puts an unwritten reserve on items? Why does Ebay let him continue selling? Thane of fife
  25. A certain suspect from the Lake District recently listed this item: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Hornby-CLOCKWORKMODEL-R9026-0-4-0ST-BEN-R110-ANNIE-R112-CLARABEL-TRAIN-SET-/400811776324 He sold the item but withdrew from the sale and then relisted at a higher price. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Hornby-CLOCKWORK-MODEL-R9026-0-4-0ST-BEN-R110-ANNIE-R112-CLARABEL-TRAIN-SET-/400816136256?pt=UK_Trains_Railway_Models&hash=item5d5280e040 Is this honourable practice?
