Apologies, you’re correct of course. All our pre-publicity had the opening time as being 10.30. I misremembered it in my haste to get the post written. Anyway, a good time was had by all those who exhibited, demonstrated, stewarded or attended. Hopefully some photos will appear on here in due course and a list of the competition winners will be posted.

We’ll be opening the Town Hall doors at 10.00am tomorrow. It promises to be an excellent little show.

It looks to be the L&YR dynamometer car now preserved in LMS livery. It may be seen inside the Princess Royal Class Locomotives Trust’s West Shed at the Midland Railway Centre, Swanwick Junction in Derbyshire.

Catering There will be a pop up café serving tea, coffee, cold drinks, sandwiches, cakes and snacks during the show. Seating will be provided for visitors to relax while eating, however we would ask that you vacate the seating area once you have finished eating so that others may relax too. The catering will be provided by well-known local outside caterers who have agreed to run the café on a no fee/no cost basis. Getting there Access by Road Thirsk is easily accessed by road. Travelling from the south or north via the A1(M) you should leave at junction 49 and take the A168 towards Thirsk and Teesside. After approximately 5 miles take the B1448 towards Thirsk and Sowerby. Stay on this road towards Thirsk town centre and the venue will be on your right just before the Ritz cinema. If travelling from the North-East via the A19 take the third Thirsk exit sign posted Thirsk, Sowerby B1448 then proceed as above. Car Parking There are a fairly limited number of car parking spaces at the venue but these will fill up quickly. There are car parking spaces available in town and on local streets. Tesco has a large car park but there may be constraints on the length of time allowed. Access by Public Transport Thirsk station is on the ECML about 22 miles north of York. It is served by an hourly service from Manchester, York, Middlesbrough and Redcar operated by Trans Pennine Express. (www.tpexpress.co.uk) There are also direct trains from Sunderland and London Kings Cross operated by Grand Central. (www.grandcentralrail.com). If travelling by LNER from the south then a change at York will be needed, although there are only a few direct services that stop at Thirsk. Thirsk station is approximately 1.5 miles from the venue; if walking, follow the road (A61) alongside the racecourse past the Tesco filling station and turn left at the mini roundabout; the venue is on the right just before the Ritz cinema. The Reliance Motor Services bus service 70 calls at the station en-route to Thirsk Market Place, a one minute walk from the venue. The Venue Accessibility There is a gentle ramp to the front door. Dogs are welcome, with conditions. Overnight Accommodation There is a Premier Inn about a mile away and a number of B&B accommodations are also available. The winner, awarded by the Signalling Record Society, was 'Plumpton Green' by Barry Luck, the sole P4 layout in the show.

Many Polish escaped from the Russians towards the end of, or shortly after WW2. I met a chap in hospital in Chesterfield a few years ago who had escaped from the USSR on foot, ending up in Iran, from whence he was shipped to the UK,. After the nationalisation of the UK coal mining industry in 1967, many newly arrived Polish men were offered work as miners. He had worked in the pits in Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire, married and raised a family here. There was a further influx of Polish men women and children after the 1956 Poznań protests, also known as Poznań June (Polish: Poznański Czerwiec), were the first of several massive protests against the communist government of the Polish People's Republic. Demonstrations by workers demanding better working conditions began on 28 June 1956 at Poznań's Cegielski Factories and were met with violent repression (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1956_Poznań_protests). To return to model railway interest, the Nottingham (Bulwell) club, organisers of the East Midlands Model Railway Society, held its Saturday evening social at the Polish White Eagle club on Shewood Rise for a number of years. Bitter hatred of all things German (in particular) still resounded at the turn of this century.

I ordered a Hornby r-t-r loco body from Peter's Spares on ebay. In the photo the body was complete but when I got it the smokebox door was missing. I messaged them and they gave a full refund (and I kept the incomplete loco body). Excellent service, complete with an explanation over what had happened.

They're correct as well using Chrome.

On a point of accuracy, this photo depicts the Up 'Waverley' (1M88). The Up TCE was 1M86, the northbound Thames-Clyde being 1S68.

Hello Andy (Scorch). The locos in use belong to TheLaird and two or three of the 'Friends' of LCN and haven't had their control functions standardised (yet). The Peaks and DMUs have ESU chips with West Coast Digital (WCD) sound files, generally using v4.0 chips. Several of the earlier v3.5 decoders remain in some of the locos but they have generally been phased out of use now as more steam outline locos have become available for use. Most of these have Zimo sound decoders of the MX644/645/648 types. As yet I think I'm correct in saying that we haven't got any of the newer MS series type, and most, but not all, of the Fairburn tanks still have the ESU/WCD type, a couple of which ran on Bradfield in their 00 days. Most of the steam locos have sound files produced by YouChoos, and I write as a highly satisfied customer. Function key F8 has been modified on several (but not all) locos to give a 'coasting' capability so the driver doesn't have to continually and gradually reduce the speed to prevent it 'chuffing ' to a stop. An LMS Compound with an ESU v4.0 chip and a Howes sound file was almost impossible to stop 'chuffing'! Therefore any steam locos with ESU chips have been replaced with our preferred Zimo type. What lets these Hornby Class 5s down is the 'skirt' which Hornby have put under the front of the smokebox, being set too far forward. If it is removed and replaced with a piece of plasticard cut to fit about 3mm further back, it improves the 'face' of the loco no end, as Timara Easter has done with these two a few years ago, which were detailed and converted to EM gauge. Needless to say, the various kits (Ks, Model Loco/DJH and Brassmasters) do not require such remedial attention.

The beer festival was very busy when we called in after expoEM closed this afternoon. There was a good range of beers on and some interesting music. Like expo, the ‘beerfes’ continues tomorrow. if you’re coming, park in the3G car park, cross the road by the pedestrian controlled crossing, come in through the gate and the expo entrance is on your left. We’re spread over three halls and the Exhibition Guide should help in finding your way around. We’re serving teas, coffees and soft drinks to expo visitors as well as to exhibitors. We open at 10.00 in the morning and close at 4.00pm.

Good day today, we could do with as many visitors tomorrow. It’s great to feel the ‘buzz’ at a show again and to see and meet up with some old mates and familiar faces after so long.
