  1. What is particularly annoying about that is that I will routinely go to buy an item and then have a little browse before I hit checkout in case there is something new that tickles my fancy. The clunkier the set up, the less likely I am to give that extra 5% of sales to Shapeways every time.

They call us "partners", oh how Id love to laugh in their faces.

Their current changes and attitude towards their primary users makes it seem almost as if they dont WANT people to "SHOP" at Shapeways, but ONLY use it as a 3D printing service.

  2. I had to order some items yesterday, so tried the new buttons, which took me round the houses, so went back to my own website which had direct links to each item, rather than taking me via the edit page.

Looks more like someone has done a quick(botched) modification or some reason. In efect I think it has done the opposite of what they want, and that is to brose their website to find stuff.Problem is that , like any large database based system, finding things is not that easy. One reason why we referred to these SQL systems as Quickbuild(the name they marketed the system), Slow Run. That was 30 years ago, and the software has not got that much better. My own webpage is in effect an alternate index, which has been shown to be the fastest way to get where you want. Having said that, I do need to rejig some of my pages as they are starting to get cluttered.

On the forums, the staff keep spouting how "most customers find products via direct links rather than searching through shapeways" as an excuse to absolutely destroy what basic marketplace there was before.  Screw actually fixing the search system or allowing you to search by most of the options available when setting up a product listing...

  3. Found it.  On the home page where it says  DESIGN  MAKE  SELL there are 9 small blocks to the left that look like a logo.  If you hover over this you will see orders and messages.  Pity they couldn't have thought about how users would actually use the glossy new website and what their reuqirements might be.  Consult the users?  What do they know?

Its not like your users make your business work or anything! Its like youtube constantly making "improvements" (a fancy new word for completely screwing over the primary creators that make the website interesting and worthwhile.)

Also the "DESIGN MAKE SELL" buttons are completely useless for anyone looking to BUY products. The marketplace has now been moved to the BOTTOM of the page under "Services".

It appears "DESIGN" functions similar to the forum "Find a designer" function, "MAKE" is just ANOTHER way to upload, and "SELL" is a shortcut to make a store.

  4. I had a parcel sent via DPD from a UK address and they "lost it" whilst it was out for delivery.

It was only after I queried why it hadn't been delivered as shown (and some time afterwards) that it was admitted they had lost it!

It was an item that was to be delivered with a signature for receipt. Some weeks later it turned up in the porch with the tracking now showing "delivered & signed for"

I had a half hearted apology from the seller and nothing from DPD for something that was supposed to be express delivery.

I have now vowed never to use the seller again as it was the second problem I had had with them and will pay more elsewhere.

    Keith

Sounds like it was solely a postal error.  Besides the half hearted apology, why vow against the seller? Surely they werent at fault.

  5. Hey all,

Ive been considering selling most of my coarse scale stuff due to lost interest and space concerns, and was wondering if any of you would be interested in first pick before I slowly stick it all on Ebay or the like.

All American stuff mind, but most in good shape, plus a good bit of prewar tinplate stuff.

Tried to sell it as bulk to a reseller but they quoted me a price insultingly low, even for resellers.

Anyone interested in seeing an inventory list?

  6. Ive hard things like this happening on Ebay where sneaky sellers will cancel a purchase for unspecified reasons and relist at a higher price.

Amazon however Im unsure.  Perhaps it was a genuine mistake and it wasnt intended to be listed at such a low price.  Still no excuse not to honor a contract.

  7. I was recently at a Formula E race in Brooklyn NY where DHL had a booth.  Saw that pedal powered delivery van.  Amazing piece of tech there.  Impressive gearing with complex chain drive and what appeared to be a small electric motor as well.

Must be useful in Europe, though I dont see it being of much use here in the US.

  8. Model Power track isn't up to much (likewise their rolling stock), but I think that a tree that plays carols is high on the list of unwanted tat (as in 'straight in a handy skip under cover of darkness' - I'd be ashamed someone might see it in my bin and think I bought it...).

Some photos of the rolling stock might convince someone to part with the cash. (Unlikely IMHO!).

Perhaps it's a mistake and the seller meant $2.95?

Model Power, before they closed up, was often seen as lower end models.  Except for their N scale locos IMO, which were actually very nice.

  9. This item seems to fit the title of the topic - basically, a circle of 18" radius track for $295?

    https://www.ebay.com/itm/MODEL-POWER-HO-SCALE-STARTER-SET-OF-OVAL-TRAIN-TRACK-ABOUT-45-X-36-INCHES-NEW/142888505300?epid=4010657508&hash=item2144d18fd4%3Ag%3A4yYAAOSwQYZWunNo&_sop=10&_nkw=%28mkt%2C+m-k-t%2C+katy%2C+bkty%2C+okkt%29&_sacat=19128&rt=nc&LH_TitleDesc=1

    but read the full description!

I still think it's a bit expensive, but you'd think they could have written a better title for the auction.

Buy the track, get a trainset FREE! Plus 2 random pieces of tat Ill throw into the box because I cant get rid of it otherwise!

  10. I see the LNWR Society is sponsoring a modelling competition - open to all comers, not just Society members. I'm having a think about which of my efforts to submit - perhaps the D12 and D13 timber wagons once I get them finished. Not that I have any expectations, just that the Society's enterprise in organising this ought to recognised and the best way of doing so will be to make it a success by having plenty of entries. Paul Gallon's worn and faded LNWR open as running c1928 would beat any of mine any day.

This is an example that any other line societies interested in promoting modelling of their line should be looking at closely - and enviously! Obviously it helps to have the support of a modelling magazine, a RTR manufacturer with one or two* relevant locos in their catalogue, and a ToC that has adopted the name of your favoured line.

*One or two, depending on whether one counts the G2 as LNWR or not!

Shame for me as Ive gone on a bit of a G3 American jaunt ATM.  I was considering making a G3 D16 at some point after Vol 3 comes out but it doesnt seem Id have the time (or money) even if it came out in the next 6 months. (Ok Ill shut up about Vol 3 now)

  11. Can you provide some more info on what it is that you actually do please? I'm a little confused

Well professionally Im an engineer technician, trained as an engineer. Modelling wise, Im a very gifted CAD drafter and designer. They kinda go hand in hand.

While I personally model in 13.5mm scale, I have experience in 4mm OO scale and an currently in the process of designing a brass etch to be made.

Typically kitbuilt and scratchbuilt locomotives use brass etches for major components such as the chassis, most the entire thing.

As I am soon to commission an etch (in .55mm brass, which while a little thick for 4mm scale, would make a good strong chassis) for my own purposes and as your offer for chassis help came at a great time, I still have time to add additional parts to my etch sheet design.

If you wanted to have an etched brass chassis for your model, I would be willing to add it to my soon to be made sheet and send it off to you at no cost but postage within the US, on account of me being in NY and you in SC.

  12. Are you capable of soldering? Most scratchbuilders would naturally say go with an etched chassis if you can, though making it rigid requires quite a bit of effort during construction. If you would like to try it, I am soon to commission an etch for a Gauge 3 loco and I could always fit some 4mm chassis parts into it while in the design stage. All Id ask monetarily is to cover postage to you, if you want. Though I admit Im not too good at chassis design for models. My G3 designs rely on hornblocks to correct my sloppy soldering skills.

  13. Yes, a hoist or helping hands is a must...I can no longer safely lift 4472 on my own, if I wish to turn the model around I have to slide one end off the bench and swivel it while pivoted on the other end...not a good idea and very nerve-racking. I need to build both a building stand and lifting trolley sometime very soon....I also need a carrying cradle now that I have paint on the model, I'm hoping that my youngest son has something suitable, he's looking into it now..

    cheers

    Pete

Dont feel too bad about your turning practices.  I do it too, but with quite more expensive equipment!

  14. Why is it that we say W-W-W instead of  "world wide web", we've taken a three syllable phrase and turned it into a nine-syllable initialism!

Does anyone actually refer to it as "World Wide Web" anymore? I havent heard it referred to as such since the very early 2000s.

I don't think any American would say emm-ale. Nor do I think this likely at any time in the near future. The French of course tried to enforce "courriel".

"Oh-led" is commonplace in US English, rather than "Oh el ee dee".

Ive never heard it pronounced "Oh-led" over here.

  15. Have we had anyone who's simultaneously enrolled at both the David Bailey and Mary Shelley Schools of Modelling?  Clearly he's determined to graduate from both this summer.

But hey, its both Unpainted and already Green! When did the kitmakers start casting precoloured whitemetal?
