  1. As for "a section where one rail is curved and the other straight" - don't all turnouts have this?  Otherwise they wouldn't be, well, turnouts.  (I freely admit that I may be missing something.)

Well not when its the same running line, which tends to require a constant gauge.

  2. Off Topic, but to attach photos, go to "Reply with Attachments"

"Choose File" which should open up your file viewer

    select a single photo

    press "attach this file"

and if you leave it at that it posts the image at the end of your post.

If you instead, during your message press "Insert" or whatever it says as I cant see it now, it inserts it at the end of whatever you have previously typed.

It can then easily be cut and pasted to wherever you want the photo to display, or insert photos as you type which is how I typically do it.

  3. A funny little story.  Back in the mid 2000s, my family took a vacation to London & Bath (From the US) and my grandfather had requested only one thing, a lead figurine of a postman with a dog hanging off his ankle for his O gauge layout.

So we took the time to stop by a figurine shop in central London, no luck.  Harrods model department?, nothing, anywhere that could possibly have it?, nothing.

We were all ready to give up the search, but towards the end of our vacation we decided to stop by a post office somewhere around Bath to send a postcard and while wandering around the lobby, there on the wall was a glass case, with none other than one of that very 'postman with ankle biting dog" figurine sitting there!

So I asked the clerk and it turned out they had a few in the back.  My grandfather was quite pleased with the story, and the figurine.

He has since passed, and while Im trying to pass on his collections to more willing owners, that figurine is something Ill never sell.

  4. Just curious

    Is this also gauge 3?

Were the chimney and dome part of a single printing?

Yes this is Gauge 3. While American large scale has universally moved to F scale, I like working in G3 and wanted to maintain compatability between my stock. I also like the historical significance of the scale and allows me to use commercially available components.

The boiler is actually 6 major parts, firebox, boiler, smokebox, chimney, steam dome, and sand dome.

It all connects via interference fits and positive locating points.

  5. With all the infelicities of the site, both before and after the change, we should be glad that they support railway modelling as far as they do. I hope that's not going to change if they put more emphasis on the jewellery. We should perhaps try to be constructive in our criticism.

Spitfire: filtering by scale does work, provided that your scale of choice is in the list. They just need to be told that your speciality scale is relevant for trains and not just for military models.

The scales available to browse through on the marketplace are NOT as vast as the options available in the product options.

They have two systems which dont work well together

  6. One reason I have my own website front ending my models. SQL searching should allow + and -. It has never been perfect but it was never intended to be used the way it is used these days, and that assumes you have designed your database properly.

To be fair, I find the search tools on Google a pain, especially as they steer you towards advertisers. I find it better to only use a few words, then use what it comes up with as a start point.

I would not use the search tools on Shapeways, as I prefer to have a look around, using the categories as a starting point, and then looking at any shops when I find something that might interest me. My time is as valuabe as anyone's, so I don't waste it. Browsing I find is much more satisfying, than wasting time not finding something.

Itd be fine to use Shapeways categories if they allowed you to search through all the options that they allow when creating a product.

I model in 1/22.5, I upload models for 1/22.5, I categorize them in Model trains-1/22.5, I cant search through the marketplace using those categories.  I can only "Search" for 1/22.5 and that doesnt really give meaningful results.

  7. For me the big problem has been that SW have not fixed/modified areas which need to be modified, and changed things that were working fine. Main reason Ihave my own website and that front ends my e=shop. Far easier tofind anything. That is mainly because I have so many designs.

Good example is what is now '3D Models' , Everything is in order they were loaded onto system. I have designs I am working on, and in effect testing , but I also add new designs ahead of hes if they are simple and can be put 'live'. Trouble is it is then more difficult to find those half done items.  Suppose I could build that into my website, but if there were two streams, one for 'live' and one for 'in design' then I could manage them far easier.

When I started a few years ago, it was a lot worse, so a lot has got better. Adding new catagories is still a bit clunky, and I am not sure, is it now possible to hange names of caegories.

It used to be possible to set items just to view, then some grumbled it was clutterin up their views so they stopped i, but it is back again, but you do have to set a price even if it is 'not for sale'.

Possibly the best feature is the 3D spin function, bu someone did tell me it was not working on their system(mobile???) .

One feature I ould add is a proper easy to search contents list of e-shops,Matybe its because I am older, but I am happy to read through a list, and don't want an ambiguous box which , if I put the right word in, actually comes up with what I am looking for. That actually wastes more of my time than my actually scanning though a contents list. Also I might actually find something else which is useful but I was not looking for., so I actually get 2 for the price of 1!

Shapeways search engine is completely broken.

Unlike Google or any other search engine, with Shapeways, the more words you put in the MORE results you get.  Thus finding anything specific is a pain, if even possible.

  8. The original books semi-handled this by having the Isle of Sodor's railways as separate from British Rail, and keeping their steam engines after BR got rid of theirs (I remember various grim looking illustrations of steam locos being scrapped to illustrate what was happening on the 'big railway' - I wonder how many kids these traumatised).

I personally subscribe to the theory that the stores of the "big railways" are nothing more than fabrications to keep the sentient workforce complacent.  Sodor did at times seem more like distopia for the working "class"

  9. This is an example of what annoys me -

    https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Britains-Railways-Air-Then-and-Now-Aerofilms-Hardback-Book-/142895538640?hash=item21453ce1d0

They use a stock photo of a brand new book cover to illustrate the sale of a second hand one. If you scroll right down to the bottom of the page (how many people bother?) there is a statement about the photo being "for illustrative purposes only" and there is a wordy description of the book condition; but if I am going to bid on something which is second hand I would like to see the condition of the cover and (preferably) a few inside pages.

I presume this is not illegal, but to me it would appear to be treading a fine line.

My problem there is the EDITION may vary.  If a book has info added in the 3rd edition I need, Im not going to buy the 2nd!

  10. Modelu figures are printed in a UV curing resin, so possibly sticking them in direct sunlight for a bit will do a bit of "post curing" to the resin which should get rid of most any uncured remnants.  Then a good scrub in warm soapy water should be good, but thats more a general cleaning advice.  Certainly dont risk any solvent cleaners on these, as I dont know the material makeup and if itd cause issues.
