  1. It's not possible to dim the tail lights only on the model as supplied. The markers at one end and the tails on the opposite end are linked to the same circuit. The wiring would require altering to separate the tail lights from the markers and then use Aux 1& 2 to control them. On a standard model Aux 1 is already used for the cab lights, so they would no longer work. However if your happy to dim both markers and tail lights together at opposite ends proceed as follows: Firstly set the Index CV's - CV31=16 CV32=0 CV262 controls one pair of marker and tail lights - Range 0 to 31 Default setting = 16 To dim try setting to 8 and view the results and adjust to suit etc CV270 controls the other pair " " " - Range 0 to 31 Default setting = 16 " " " " " " " " CV278 controls the cab lights - Range 0 to 31 " " = 16 " " " " " " " " Once happy with the results re-set CV31 to 0 If possible, use POM as you can view the results instantly. HTH Ken
  2. Looking really good Peter - captured the details really well, especially the end plates etc, you certainly made good use of the photos ! Regards Ken
  3. Starting to take shape nicely, would it perhaps have been easier/possible to mod the headcode box/etched plate etc and then paint them prior to fitting to save awkward masking etc The Vi trains MU jumpers look so much better that Bach's "lump" of plastic.
  4. Good head on comparison photo here http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/84231-latest-Bachmann-class-40-32-481/ - see post 6 - draw your own conclusions !
  5. Interesting comments. I found that on first using D211, it ran well with no problems - so far, however the default CV settings of CV3/4/5/6 "out of the box" were far from ideal. With the loco idling, using the 16/128SS button it moves off too quickly and ends up thrashing in 2-3 feet or less, and if the large brake button (Lenz) is then used, it ends up stopped with the engine still thrashing away. As shown below, the braking was set higher than the inertia as supplied. As supplied CV3 = 100 (range 0-255) changed to 255 settings: CV4 = 120 ( " 0-255) left at 120 CV5 = 255 ( " 0-255) changed to 128 CV6 = 128 ( " 0-255) " 64 What is strange is that both the Bachmann loco leaflet and the Lok 4 manual show CV 5 & 6 as having a MAX value of 64. However on reading these CV's "out of the box" CV5 was 255 and CV6 128 - hence the near scale 200mph ? max speed. Perhaps this is an error in the Lok 4 manual, and Bachmann have simply just copied it ? Nice sounds/multi start etc, although personally I don't like the air brake and the train brake ? linked on the one F key using on/off. Anyone else notice a couple of small issues on this model - no hole (both ends) in the light housing for the lower centre headcode disc to fit, both buffer beams also appear to have one (same) pipe missing - and these are not included in the detailing packet either.
  6. Many, myself included, find the 28mm round speaker sonically superior to a rectangle 20x40 ? My own 141 has a Howes 8pin V3.5 used with an 21/8 adaptor and a 28mm round Loksound speaker, and it sounds excellent, with more than enough volume available.
  7. For a V3.5 - 28mm round Loksound 100 ohm speaker (fits the holder) - from SWD / Digitrains / DCC Supplies etc etc
  8. Daddyman Thanks for the info on the H/C panels - that makes perfect sense now, especially the plate thinning using the recesses as a thickness guide etc. I don't like the original square cornered H/C panels either. Nice work on the tank/pipe details, and those bufferbeams, a coat of yellow coming soon on the noses ?
  9. Hi Peter Yes your right, should have read your post properly ! Anyway re a Lima 40 body, it fits a Bach chassis that well, getting it back off again can pose a problem, although very slight trimming of the chassis ends would ease that, IF felt necessary. Your Bungee cord tip will prove most useful. Regards Ken
  10. Hi Dave Bif's - legomanbiffo (Blue) sound fitted 128 sounded very good indeed at Glasgow - loads of nice noises from it ! definitely worth a listen, especially if Howes O/S HTH Ken
  11. Hi Peter Quality work as usual Peter - Re fitting a Hornby/Lima 40 body on a Bach chassis, it fits that snugly, there's no need for any form of fixing etc. at least with the original Bach 40 chassis, not tried it yet with the latest one. Regards Ken
  12. Daddyman A couple of perhaps silly questions: Why use the Shawplan headcode plates back to front ? - and not as intended with the supplied small cowling rings added ? Was the original Bachmann headcode plate + rings removed/flushed before adding the (thinned down) Shawplan etched plates ? Your rubber grommet mod is now on my to do trial list
  13. Ah OK so you ran it on DC with the chip fitted. I always run a new loco in on DC with the chip removed and the blanking (DC) plug fitted - sound or otherwise. Only once I'm happy with it's DC running etc, will I fit a decoder of any type. No decoder will help a poor running loco on DC, run any better on DCC - sort the basics first - then any decoder chosen will have the best chance of working as intended.
  14. Very strange it ran ok on DCC but not on DC to start with ? As for the paper on the track test etc - the centre axles don't pick-up (as supplied) only the outer 2 on each bogie.
  15. Suggest you read through some of the earlier posts - there's is an official response from Bachmann regarding the 40 pick-up issues and their suggestions for sorting it etc - earlier in this thread HTH tractor
  16. I doubt it will sound as good as this ? , but the SWD 40 has cold start options - (their multi start 37 is pretty good), apart from the idling transition from cold to normal. Biff's 40 will also have cold start options available.
  17. As Lee's (blueeighties) above sound clip confirms, once the pick up problem is sorted, even fitted with sound it runs perfectly, although it's possible being a Zimo it may ? have the optional capacitor added. I'm sure Lee has now fixed many 40's with lots more to do. I have two examples, one is fitted with Howes sound, the other is on the WB to be worked on, both have added pick ups (12) and both now run perfectly. It would be very interesting to hear if anyone has added extra pick-ups and still not got the model to run correctly ? as many are now happy with theirs once the pick-ups have been added. It's worth bearing in mind, that the new pick ups will bypass the grease issue, regardless of how much there is or not, conductive or otherwise !! Some have also advised, even after getting their model back from Bachmann with the "excess grease removed" etc, they are still finding running problems. So gentlemen it's not all doom and gloom, there is light at the end of this 40 tunnel !
  18. What size of plastic tube - ie outside dia have you used for the markers ? Your nose ends/grommets are looking the business painted etc - all very nice
  19. Very nicely finished overall for N gauge, however the widths of the red/white stripes are questionable, the red stripe should be wider/deeper than the white stripe, the opposite to what's on the coach.
  20. As the latest 40 body has separate nose ends, as per 37's, they just need centre box nose ends with headlights. Hopefully at some point they will also do the rebuilt "square" cornered, centre box noses as per Haymarket's . 40 063/6 etc
  21. The CFPS Bachmann Limited Edition BR Blue 40 145 had headlights, so it's likely the L/L version will also.
  22. The description of this set on KMRC states that these coaches were used on the WHL when in fact they were mainly used on the Inverness-Kyle line, another very scenic route. Harburn Hobbies have previously produced similar Bachmann MK2 Tourist Green/Cream "Clan" packs of these coaches, with four different names, thankfully the coaches in this new train set will have different names/no's. We shall have to wait and see just how well they match up ? The LNER Green/Cream MK1 coaches as were used on the West Highland Line have also been previously produced in 2 differently branded packs of 4 - possibly, jointly ? between Model Rail Magazine and Harburn Hobbies
  23. Bob See my previous posts in this thread : 380 / 389 / 409 all the info required to sort it out (permanently) HTH Ken
  24. Although AFAIK not yet advised, I assume going by the RRP of this set @ £294.95 the loco will come fitted with Bachmann's new "budget" sound, and not a Loksound 4 ?
  25. On the the model as supplied, there are NO actual pickups that touch any wheels, the revised pick-up system used, passes current from the live axles to the wheels via the brass bearing bushes/bogie mounted pick up bar etc, lots of non- conductive grease everywhere not helping !
