I will admit, I too have not found a Photograph or Drawing with any conclusive evidence that there was a step. I have seen a few where it looks like there is a shape there, but it is hard to decipher. I would hazard a guess that there wasn’t a step, as there are clear photos of the both versions of the vans (original and re-built) without a step. So if a step was needed you would think it would have been added earlier rather than later towards closure when money was tight for the railway. I have modelled both versions of vans without the step, but I feel it does look atheistically pleasing with one too! Excellent modelling though! Yes, the brake lever was on the platform side towards Southwold. There is information in the books that they apparently only painted the south side (platform side) of the Coaches to save money on paint costs!

Not update on here in a while, a few layouts on the go, and also starting to model the Southwold in 7mm! just a few shots of the 00n3 stock on the photo board I’m building.

No.1 Southwold, passing Bird’s folly with a mixed train, shortly after leaving Halesworth on its way to Southwold.

Are we talking prototypically or what I am using in modelling terms? I can’t remember off hand what gear box it is, I shall find out.

Sorry for the late reply! Are you planning it in 009 or 00n3? If you are planning 009, I would suggest a microace 2-4-0 chassis, although these are quite hard to get hold of now. For 00n3 I am using Alan Gibson wheels.

As if I haven’t got enough on my plate, I’m introducing a new layout that I have taken ownership of. This is Birds Folly, built by Stewart Green. Birds Folly is the name given to the real location of a siding and Engine Shed built in the early part of the century by the Southwold Railway. This is its representation in 009. The shed consisted of a wooden frame with asbestos cladding on a concrete base. Today, the concrete base survives with its inspection pit and the remains of a well that provided a water supply for the engines. In the autumn of 2015 the Southwold Railway Society undertook work to clear the site and make the remains more visible and further restoration is still ongoing. The route of the track between the engine Shed and the Bridge is now a public footpath.

Hi, I’m after a Bachmann Clay Cross wagon item number 37-079U. If anyone could help, it would be appreciated. They seem none existent at the moment! Thanks!
