  1. The workshop building is from LNWR Days. Bangor was the North Wales Divisional Headquarters for the Engineer and Permanent way workers. When it was erected I have not as yet discovered, Mr Footner was the Resident Engineer and IIRC his area was from Holyhead to Chester and up to the Wirral. When you think about the North Wales Coast Line, the volume of structures, earthworks, the two tubular bridges, he had quite a lot within his responsibility.  

     

    The sawtooth at the back of the building is standard Webb engine shed panels/roof which is the same as the engine & goods sheds. Looking closely at the image below (copied in from previous post) that saw tooth roof continues forwards as a single storey, and it looks like the front of the building has had a 2 storey 'U' shape constructed around it. My suggestion is that on the 1st floor sides, these were some of the offices/drawing offices, and on the front, both floors were offices. The exception to the front offices being the sides of the building, where it looks like there are stanchions and from the track plan above, you can see that one track goes down each side of the building - so there is a trackway underneath the sides of the 'U' - I hope that makes sense.  

     

    At one time there was an engineers crane located at Bangor, permanent way gangs worked from here and there was also a crane which was over a couple of the tracks. There was also a small shed which housed the district engineers saloon. The offices included a drawing office which we know as drawings exist marked Bangor from the draughtsmen who worked there, these include minor amendments and also tenders for larger works, such as bridge replacements that the LNWR did not carry out in house. 

     

    I have not managed to locate a drawing for the building, you can use the standard drawings from Jack Nelson to produce the saw toothed section, the rest I think you are going to have to freelance based on the photographs you have available.

  4. Just to follow up on an earlier technical point some emails which are supposed to have been forwarded from sales@ to me have not been, new filters and technical stuff above my understanding have been applied and this issue should not occur going forwards. 

     

    Overall, this has been helpful in highlighting an issue which is now resolved, we were able to quickly remedy a situation once known about, and I look forwards to seeing Amanda's LNWR carriages being built in the Netherlands.

    P.S. If you are modelling LNWR carriages get in contact with our Modelling Officer David M with any enquires, he has been churning out LNWR carriages at a great rate in the last few years.

    Hi Amanda, 

     

    Understandable. If the book is not there by now it means R Mail have it still and experience says it will either reappear with me in a few weeks as I put return addresses on, or its gone forever - so after sending the first message I have packed another copy and am going to the Post Office today after the school run. 

     

    sales@lnwrs.org.uk is the best way to contact me, an upper case S can cause some issues sometimes, .co.uk definitely does not reach me, I will make the appropriate enquiry to our IT volunteer.

    I followed the stated procedure on the LNWRS website for the ordering of a book some weeks ago, and have yet to receive the courtesy of a response. Cottage industries and volunteer-based organisations can suffer from this. 

     

    A glowing contrast, however, was the GNRS, who immediately responded, got one of the two volumes out in short order, profusely apologised for the other being out of stock, ordered a reprint and informed me of its progress, getting it to me in a week or so after the rapid dispatch of the in-stock volume. 

     

    My conclusion? Model the GNR instead!

    I am really sorry that you are struggling to receive the book. I have not had any emails through to sales@lnwrs.org.uk enquiring about shipping to the Netherlands, and I have just checked my eBay messages and nothing in there either. 

     

    I am assuming the eBay purchase you refer to was made on the 23rd June 2022 - that went into the post on the 25th June - if it has not turned up with your friend then please ask her to message me on eBay and I can handle it from there - it wont be the first book Royal Mail have lost for me since the start of the Pandemic.

  9. As Merfyn pointed out, Graham was a member of the Colwyn Model Railway Club and that is how he came to know my father, Arthur. Dad remembers Graham as a very enthusiastic model railway builder and a character. He remembers one story of Graham, which was the night before an exhibition at the Colwyn club rooms in Beech Road, Graham incorrectly did some wiring and burnt out all the point motors on the clubs 'TT' layout, an issue that was rectified and trains did run the next day. He also remembers that Graham was hands on and willing to learn and try to improve his modelling techniques.  

     

    After having not seen Graham for a long time, Dad was very pleased to bump into him at the Colwyn Clubs Exhibition a few years ago and catch up with him. He remembers him with fondness and will miss seeing him at future exhibitions, especially with his Z gauge layout. 

     

    For my part, I first met Graham at the Kettering O gauge guild show, where I was on duty for the first time on behalf of the LNWR Society. He stopped by the stand and asked if we had any details about a particular LNWR buffer type, and in discussion we exchanged names. He said he knew a Bond once, named Arthur but he lived in North Wales. It just goes to show it is a small world. 

     

    Since that first meeting wherever we then saw each other again we would always stop and have a good chat. I will remember him for his kindness and his enthusiasm for the hobby.

    Our thanks to Mike Wild and Richard Watson at Hornby magazine for making it happen. Fortunately it was scheduled for filming at Shildon last Tuesday (3 November) and was achieved before we all went into lockdown 2 last Wednesday. 

     

    Sometimes people make educated guesses - at least one person did so in the 94xx thread earlier today!

    I am rather impressed with this motor set up and the ingenuity in using this motor.

     

    One thing you dont say (unless I missed it) is where you sourced the two plastic gears for the drive shaft and driving axle. Can you remember the source?

    Name plate Victor - Post 1864 all goods engines were not named, and those that were named had the nameplates removed. I dont think any of the Special DX (Webb rebuilds) were named - a look in Baxter will confirm this.

     

    Precedent – GEM – Looks to be on GEM White metal Chassis

     

    Crewe Special – Definitely with some additions – J83 chassis replacement
