  7. I keep coming back to this one for inspiration. Fantastic. There is another thread on this site about how realistic is your railway (or something to that effect). Any image from this thread would do the business. On this occasion I was drawn back to this item via a general search for class 47's. Looking at the differences between the Heljan and the Bachmann offerings. It seems that both have their positive and negative features. What is your opinion on the 2 models? Which class 47 is used on Shenston Road? Anyway, I was specifically looking at your model of 47 091 Thor. My next project will be 1677 and will be in a similar condition to yours. I'm just waiting for builders plates etc. You have obviously been working from similar photographs that I have and I'm impressed by the front end and the areas where it looks as if the yellow paint has been removed down to either primer or bare metal. Can you offer any advice on how you approached the weathering? I have a Bachmann class 47 to work on. Would you recommend enlarging the windows as done in a thread on a P4 class 47. Looks good but is it worth the risk? Shenston Road is unbelievably realistic. It's probably too big for exhibiting. Do you have visiting operator days? Regards, Bob

  11. Sorry, thought France was still part of the English crown. Must be intercontinental. By the way, did the French thing ever get sorted out after Henry V or should it still come under the English crown? France is a great place but it needs a few country pubs. Sorry, we should be talking about transfers and bloody good ones at that. Bob

  14. One day, all transfer suppliers will provide such a service. In the mean time, Steve, carry on exceeding everyone's expectations. Bob
  15. Deluxe materials suggest the use of a penetrating superglue to hold liquid lead in place. Be careful if you use this method. Make sure that whatever nook or cranny you fill has all it's joins fully sealed. If not, as I found to my cost, the penetrating superglue will, err, penetrate. The superglue might run through the joint, cover your hand which is holding the model, sticking your fingers together (superglue was developed to stick skin together after all). It might start to dissolve the foam cradle that the whole thing is resting on. It might also cover the outside of your lovely model with superglue which might take you days to get back to the original pre-paint condition you'd just lost. Imagine how you might feel if that happened when the model was already painted. But I suppose if it had been painted, the paint might have sealed the joints and I wouldn't be passing on the possibility of a bad experience. Bob
  16. Titanium and aluminium may be light but they certainly aren't alloys. They are metal elements. An alloy is a material composed of at least 2 other elements, at least one of which is metal.

    Is that not like saying the "I bought a brand new car today. All the usual faults on the car weren't there but the wheel bearings were loose, the drive shaft was bent, it hadn't been cleaned fully and the standard fitting for the tow hook at the front isn't standard so nothing fits. No worries, I've already got all the tool to fix these types of problems so no need to tell the people who made the car that their assembly and quality assurance processes are less than they should be. The real problem is that because were modeler's and because we have all the gear and because it's "only a toy", Hornby know that they don't have to worry about making sure that they are supplying a product which is fit for purpose.     Do me a favour. Why should Hornby take any notice of this site when the bulk of people who use it are more than happy with poor quality. Take a look at the running plate. They're still selling them as wonky as they were in December. Now I'll get the response asking if I've ever made anything. Can you not correct it yourself? Hornby have no thought for their customers so don't expect the situation to improve. They are up the creek at the moment so customer satisfaction will not be high on their agenda. To the subject of factory weathering. Don't touch it with a barge pole. Bob

Hello All, I was turned on to Railtec as a result of a comment from the famous music person who is probably the envy of many railway modellers simply because he can throw money at his hobby, have as much space as he wants and always buy the best. Regardless of what you might think of him, for someone in his position to suggest that, and I quote "Railtec transfers are in a class of their own and a joy to use" justified some investigation. I don't suppose anyone will take as much notice of me as they do Pete Waterman (ooops!) but he's right. The transfers are smashing but that's not the half of it. The service is unbeatable. I have yet to be disappointed about any requests for any transfer, so long as I am able to supply a reasonable amount of detail. It's almost a bespoke service at mass produced prices. You might have to wait a couple of weeks for Steve to produce the first off transfers but I bet they spend longer in your transfers tin before you use them. In another thread from another small supplier, I have added comment about my project to build a rake of 24 cemflo hoppers. What I haven't included is my preference to use Railtec cemflo transfers rather than those offered by the specific small supplier (product just released). I have no connection to Steve or Railtec, I'm just a customer blown away by the service. Bob PS Read my post on some other supplied products. I'm not always so complimentary (grump old man). Anyway, Steve's product come highly recommended and I think they are good too.

  22. What a fantastic idea. I've posted on this subject in the past and was lambasted by the masses but that was the suggestion that a complete range was required. This suggestion must be worth consideration. A pair of points to match already available track (SMP or C&L). How many would be prepared to place orders in advance to fund the project so no risk to Dave? Could Dave give an indicative cost so we can assess any benefit over the option of getting the likes of Marcway to build them out of PCB. It's got to be worth consideration. Bob
