  1. SO they never really used the Up Chat moss ine for shunting moves? I know there are shunt signals all the way along to make a shunt move. It was possible to shunt from arrival on the Up & Down slow into Edge hill then on to the Up Slow over the right hand facing switch and follow the ground position signals all the way into a platform, so I assumed the bobby was able to clear a shunt move from the platform onto the the Up Slow to be in rear of the signal and move to a platform in the other trainshed.
  2. Yeah thats what I thought LMS. I think the changes they made in the 1980s took the siding away and I never noticed it because of the new booking office. How about loco movements. The incoming loco was trapped by its own rake of coaches until it left with another loco. Then I used to see them go from the platform. 8 for instance, into the neck and then where would they usually go? I remember a couple of times watching a loco from the platform it arrived on out into the tunnel and then back in to hook up to its next train.
  3. Hey, guys, I was wondering about loco operations at Lime street in the 80s and into the 90s and the use of the sidings between the platforms and the neck siding that was in the cutting. I would be really interested to hear any information at all about anything you know but with particular refrence to how any why you would get Class 90s stabled in the siding D instead of holding them in the neck siding? Siding A was between P1 & P2 Siding B was between P2 & P3 Siding C was where? Siding D was between P5 & P6 Parcels bay was between P6 & P7 in the southern trainshed, what was it used for, by what and when did they stop using it for operations? (last time I really remember it being used heavily there was 3 or 4 GUV coaches being loaded with parcels for instance)
  4. Im not really sure if this belongs here or in the modeling area but as its about real life Ill ask it here. I was wondering how I would go about getting hold of track plans for a certain area. Most especially Edge hill while the Circular goods was still in use and Allerton TMD. Aare Quail maps pretty much the best way, and if so do I get hold of an old version?
  5. I might have been mistaken, it was getting dark. Ill try and pop down and have a propper look, but its quite overgrown with vegetation this time of the year. It might be an excuse for another trip ;-)
  6. I was on the train last night. It was getting dark so its hard to tell but it seemed to me that the 3 wagons are now not on the line. There is a buffer stop in rear of the wagons and then another older buffer stop in advance of them.
  7. There were a lot of 08 shunters at Allerton in the 80s and into the 90s in the old engine shed. Ive already asked about it on here but nobody seems to know what happened there. I do remember the whole shed being full of them in various states or being repaired though. I wouldnt be surprised if Allerton saw every single 08 in the country at some point there were so many.
  8. I dont seem to have access to my photobucket account anymore so I cant show you are pictures. If you take a look at NW6003 Sequence 005 Castlefield Jn to Allerton Jn of the LNW SA you can see the track arrangement at the time. The siding is labelled as DMU spur, it was often used to stable a tamper from Warrington. The siding can be accessed by a train on platform 2 but not 3 which was the Merseyrail terminus platform, but there was DC rails on 2 but only for the station (it was operationally possible to put a Merseyrail set into 2 to have it terminate, but never done as far as I know) I mentioned the siding as it was a possible way to access the bay at hunts cross with the shortest propel movement, you would access it via platform 2, wait for the Mersey unit to arrive, back out to platform 2, the forward onto the Up & Down Electric line then propel into platform 2 with a call on move. Now whether there is already a class 31 in the bay platform with a brake van or not I dont know, it wouldnt matter because in order to get a class 31 and its brake van onto what will become the front of the train you are going to have to propel into it. Be that with a move from platform to to the rear of the protecting signal for platform on the Up & Down Electric of directly from Allerton TMD I dont know, the platform 2 option is the shortest move but I dont know if it would be allowed. If you watch this youtube video you can see from the start that the SA is wrong with its layout there. at 1;41 you can see the switch that gives access to Allerton TMD from Hunts cross, this is where I am assuming the journey of the class 31 started. earlier you can see the DMU siding that ends just before the Hillfoot Rd over bridge.
  9. Its about 1.5 miles from the exit signal of the TMD to the buffer stops at the station, the siding is a couple hundred yards closer to the TMD. I know the difference between a shunt move and propelling the train. I know what book to look at to find out if you can do it. I also know there are several options that can be used in order to hook up a trainset to the brakevans Im just not sure what one of the 6 or so options they actually used.
  10. The only way to get a van on both ends is to put one into Hunts cross station, call on the 507/508 into the station and then hook it up there, then the 31 could propel either from Allerton TMD or the holding siding that is just west of the bridge. Either way you are going to have to propel the van into the 507/508 trainset. You are also going to have to propel the first van into Hunts cross platform. The only way around it is to do the whole operation on platform 2
  11. Thanks for all the info, Im not sure if Ill wait for the new vans or not... The ebay listing looks interesting, it seems I need those parts and then buy 3 coaches to fit the parts to. I dont mind that as I have no real interest in the 507/508 being able to run as it will always be run DiT. I assume the method used to taking a set into the depot was. a loco propelled a brake van down to Hunts cross and hooked up to the set then hauled the train into the depot? Also I assume the Ellesmere port pair were used to take the trainsets from Ellesmere port to Allerton to have their wheels turned there then tripped back to Ellesmere port rather than taking the stock over the Stock Interchange line?
  12. The only one I know is https://www.gov.uk/government/organisations/rail-accident-investigation-branch But thats a more modern site, I doubt it will have what you need. I seem to remember it is possible to get the reports, I dont know if you need an account with a sponsor company to get them.
  13. Thank you Gibbo765. I think I just found a pair for 20 quid. I am assuming one end had the same coupling as the 08 shunter and the other the same as the 507/508s ? Also as an extra can you buy the 507/508? Im not really bothered if its an unpowered model or a motorized train
  14. I thought I recognized them from the Bakerloo. How long have they been on the island, and how many liveries have they had? I remember the DinoIsland scheme a good few years back, then they all had a repaint to the red they wear now
  15. Ive no idea what barriers are. I know what they were used for, its the type of brake van Im looking for as I would like to buy a model of it so I can repaint it into that livery.
  16. Do you have any idea what those brake vans are called?
  17. Oh ok.... Thanks. Like I said I know little about the trains side, I would have to look those names up to know what that is. I know the trains are ex London underground. Bakerloo line I think.
  18. There hasnt been an engineering train for many years now. They use road railers sometimes of course, it is 2019 after all, not everything on the island is that old even if the minds are. I believe they used a road railer a couple of years ago when there was a land slip on the bank up near Beeper shute, the access point being on Rowborough Road just after on the bridge. There is a couple of two or three wagons just south of the depot at Ryde, West of Slade Road (opposite the field with the stable on it at the end of Quarry Road, you cant see them from the other side beause of the trees and wall). One is a ballast hopper but no idea what model of hopper it is, I dont really go in much for the trains. a couple were flat wagons I think, but they havent moved for many a long year now. Just old and rusty. Yes they used to operate the shunter through the tunnel, no idea if it ever went along the pier, I never saw it with my own eyes but doesnt mean it never happened, there is no Route Availablity restriction that means it couldnt happen.
  19. They dont use any engineering trains. Green zone working too as far as I know.
  20. Oh I see. Nice layout. Seems accurate from what I can see of it in the photo. Never seen it before. Ill try and get up to Bristol to see it. It looks fascinating as its a particular hobby of mine too
  21. Yeah but that opens up a whole new can of worms as to what is going to haul those containers ;-)
  22. I thought the proposed extension only lived until they built the track that lead up to Gateacre and the Aintree or left into the north dock complex... They already had access to Herculaneum Dock. They had a rather large complex there quite early on from Herculaneum, Harrington and Toxteth docks. Do you have any original contemporary plans? or copies there of?
  23. I think the Cavern club was to do with the link line not the loop line. In that article the first picture is two tunnel portals the left side turns right thenstarts the never ending climb up to the original CLC alignment and on to Brunswick station. The other has two tracks in it, one is a turnback for the station and the other lso turns right then up the tunnel to Brunswick The line drawing isnt 100% accurate as to the layout of the track but its close enough... But dont think you can overlay that onto a city map and know where the track is
  24. The whole of the Merseyrail network is facinating, its all made up of different companies railways stitched together. The only new bits are the loop and the link, and soon there will be another part, but thats news for another day
  25. Yes the platforms were aligned, but like I said the tracks and indeed the tunnels were not. Of couse the available space in the center of the city dictated where the station would be on the ground and then a few years later the Mersey Railway built there station under it so as to align themselves with that rather how you say it... The CLC aligned their terminal approach to be inline with Exchange station. Linking into the dockers umbrella would have been possible, but.... it would have been more likely to break down into the Wapping tunnel and create a new route over the LNWR tracks. The CLC and LNWR locked horns many times in lots of places over access... The CLC wanting to put their services over heavily used LNWR lines.
