Just be careful when handling the loco, I've lost one of the little fittings from the boiler (filler plug or mud-hole cover?) so a call to Hornby on monday :-(

In stock at Haworth station shop £119.00 and the profits go to keeping steam running!
  3. As a former 'booking lad' at Healey mills 'box I'm really looking forward to seeing this in the flesh!
  4. Well I for one think this is excellent news, along with PECO's bull head rail announcements. I don't have the time or skill to hand build track so more prototypical track can only be a good thing given how good RTR stock has got in the last few few years. On the practical side the sleepers look a bit thin, will the rail heights match other manufactures products? On the product front I'd like to see some form of 'medium' turn outs, that give a crossover and maintain the 6' between running lines without taking up too much space on my 'train set'.
  5. Some advice with wiring diagrams for interlocking here: http://www.dccconcepts.com/vamr/dcc-advice-11-wiring-pointwork-and-special-track-conditions-for-dc-or-dcc
  6. I'm very pleased with this announcement - as an 'average' modeller I don't have the time, skill or indeed money to hand build points (or order bespoke) - but I do want my track to look a bit more accurate than the current streamline offerings - after all, look how far we have come with RTR stock over the last few years! edited to remove typos
  7. I finally got round to getting mine out of the box, intending to run it in on DC - I was met by a loud buzzing noise and no movement! I check the meshing of the gears and all looked well but the motor was hot! Anyway, removed the dcc blanking plug, fitted a spare Bachmann chip and tried it on the dcc layout, happily it now works with smooth and near silent running - the blanking plug has been binned!
  8. Yes, I have that in a Hornby L1, its a good sound and I like the variable load on F5. The trouble is, I don't want the two to obviously sound the same and the N2 / L1 sound project has some fairly distinctive whistle clips. There's obviously no real J50 to record from (yet - www.facebook.com/TheJ50Group and http://thej50group.wix.com/home ) but having done a bit of research I thought the J94 from Paul Chetter / Digitrains might be be the closest: J50 boiler diameter 4'5"@ 170psi pressure,18.5 x 26 cyclinders and 22963 lb tractive effort J94 boiler diameter 4'3" @ 170psi prssure, 18x26 cylinders and 23870 tractive effort I'm not sure about the whistle, having trawled my dvd collection and the internet I am yet to find a clip that has a J50 whistle and short of a trip to the NRM to look at the drawings, I'll assume it to be fairly high pitched in line with other contemporary LNER locos. Another option might be the Digitrains / Paul Chetter D16 sound project which has the new braking on F2 settings... A trip to Lincoln and a play might be in order I suspect... I know locoman has done a recording of a J94 but I want to save that for the DJM model. Edited to add J50 group links
  9. So I guess the only question remaining would be what sound project to use for it? - I was thinking Paul Chetters J94 ?
  10. I always fancied a go at a stand er 2-10-0. 4000gal tender and taper boiler...
  11. A good few years ago when I was member of Dewsbury MRC we had a great N gauge model of Langwathby - I don't know if it's still in existence? There can't be much of that line that hasn't been modelled, I'm now toying with the idea of Helwith Bridge Edited to correct spelling
  12. Yes, a few years ago when I was working Horbury Junction a 37 came off shed at Healey Mills and when opened up in the middle of the night it was shooting flames out of the exhaust - I was later told it was due to oil leaking into the exhaust
  13. I think the Z21 / z21 systems are easiest for handing trains over...
  14. I've had no issues with the CMX track cleaner (other than finding a loco strong enough to pull it) - I find it great for getting to the bits of my layout that I cant reach.
  15. Well I for one can't wait and wish you the best in this - let me know when they're ready! I had a good chat with the guy on the footplate and he seemed really paionate about getting these 'right'.
  16. Is this 8F for loksound and where can I find some details on it? I have an 8F with sound from Olivias ($h!te) that I would like re-blown Many thanks, Nathan
  17. Would the generally higher voltage of dcc make up for lower conductivity?
  18. The shiny metal is where I've removed material with the dremel. I'll paint it up when I weather the loco but at least its all working now.
  19. I should add that its the 4th axle from the front that is touching!
  20. I thought I would post this incase it helps anyone else... I received a new to me 9F in the post this morning, so this afternoon I stuck in a dcc concepts chip along with a stay-alive. At the corner the loco shorted out my Z21 controller, I double checked the pick-ups, valve gear and wiring and tried again. It still did it so I tried a spare Hornby chip and removed the capacitors off the motor - no luck it still did it! I then tried it in the dark and saw a bright blue flash from the driving wheels, there was just enough play in the axle that the flanges are shorting on the metal firebox! When I get chance later I will strip the loco down and grind a bit of metal away... anyway I hope this will help someone... I'll try to get some pics as I do it. mods please feel free to move if this is in the wrong section
  21. I'm not sure, the story I read puts it earlier than 1910 and definatly says it was just an engine running through buffers: Its in this book: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Ganger-Guard-Signalman-Memories-Carlisle/dp/0851533973
  22. Theres an old story of a locomotive buried in the bog beneath Dandry Mire Viaduct (Garsdale). It ran through the buffers and toppled down about the turn of the century. Allegedly the top of its chimney was visible until the 1930s when it was burried by ballast tipped in a relaying job - I've toyed they idea of having a wonder about with a spade and a metal detector!
