On my APT , the cab lights work on F1 in the direction of travel, but they only work if F0, the headlights, are also on - they work independently of the headlights but they don’t work if F0 is off.

i dont run DCC so thats probably way

    That's not a bad idea.

Through-wiring the lights each half of the train would also mean the DTS decoder could control them, too.

Does that then make the pickups redundant? I seem to recall someone saying pickup drag was a significant factor in the performance issues with this train.

In my case I need pickups on most axles for train detection anyway, but this might help other people.

i'll most likely leave all the pickups still wired in for back up sake

If you can solder I don’t see why they couldn’t be replaced with less obtrusive ones.

a plan i have is using some 2.54 mm micro connectors to link up all 6 coaches to the DTS and relay on the DTS and the TBF's capacitors since they're hidden

Also interested in this. I'm unsure whether I should be concentrating on fixing the one powered NDM so it has sufficient traction not to just spin it's wheels when presented with a gradient, or  whether to power to the second NDM.

I have a 10 car set and it can't climb to save it's life -- whereas a train the same length made from Bachmann Mk2Fs (also lit) hauled by an 86, 87 or 90 will walk up the same gradient without issue.

in my case, i plan on splitting my full 14 car set in half and running it as the proposed APT-Q sets using the new tooled MK4 DVT in place of the DAV4, hence the need to power the second NDM

  6. Does Hornby sell spares for the powered NDMs yet? I still want to power the dummy NDM you get with the 7 car set and i want to know if it'll be cheaper buying the spare parts myself and building it or just getting the single powered NDM and swapping shells

Someone else has confirmed their’s went back and had new one fitted

That was my one, she had her one replaced as it blew straight out of the box, and now she has a spring in her step

This has probably been discussed but I've only just seen it.

Rocket railway seem to suggest buying the older APT.

I'm pretty sure this is not because they're miffed at stoking up demand at their stand and then not being able to sell any sets.

In a way I can see what they mean, but to me the old APTs just don't look the right shape, to me they look boxy at the front and I'm really not an expert by any means.

    And the wheels are weird.

And I just couldn't get mine to run smoothly without screeching on start-up from cold despite regearing and lubing.

And the pantographs are another £50.

Most importantly you'll always be stuck with the same 5 coaches unless you start cutting and shunting.

i do love the blue-ish livery Hornby gave to the 1980's model

First off I’d check the contacts are actually touching the wheels by turning it upside down. And with the axle pushed towards the frame see if paper will slide between without moving it. Tweak them towards the wheel with tweezers or pliers. I disabled mine and found they bent off very easily so not sure there’s a lot of spring in them.
If that doesn’t help you could check the wires are soldered to the pickups correctly. If neither of those work then it’s probably a break inside the wire that makes contact when turned so you or Hornby might need to replace the wire.

the pickups are contacting the wheels perfectly fine but i have bent them slightly to make sure they make proper contact. I cant open it up as all my screw drivers have too small heads

That’s an issue I have on one TBF. Do they flicker on if you wiggle the bogie though?

once or twice, but now they only come on if i partly derail the bogie

Stick with it. Perhaps paint it to make less plastic looking. I cant see anyone making one for it. I dont know is the Bachmann class 90 pan will fit, minus the servo drive etc. It also depends if you have overhead catenary and want it to act like a working one. Its up to you but I wouldn't let it stop you enjoying the model.

its more so i would like to replace it as my one has trouble stay put when put into the raised position, just the movement of the NDM going around a curve is enough to cause it to drop
