  2. when I think back to how I used to lust after the layout when I was about 14 after not long joining the local club, it was the first layout I went out exhibiting with Chris and my dad at Blackburn show and I counted the days I tried to copy it back then and couldnt from the pics in 1997 BRM issue, I wore that copy out looking at it. I remember Chris constantly building new locos for it and also all the whitemetal road vehicle kits. I went to a few more exhibitions with it and loved it. It ran great which is what I wanted at the time as I was frustrated with my 00 Hornby ringfield stuff. and it was my favourite period and set in Liverpool too. thats what I liked about Chris's layout as thats what me and my dad like too, set In Liverpool. with all the extra realistic detail and weathering. I also remember Chris building the pub, he left it on his car roof one night at the club and got in the car and drove off, it stayed on and we chased him round the corner to tell him fast forward to about 5 years ago and because Chris likes to build layouts he had no space for it and it had outlived its exhibiton life, I had a chance meeting with him as I hadnt seen him for years and he said he was selling it, so I jumped at it and bought it off him. was worried it wouldnt fit up the loft hole but just fitted, only thing we had to sacrifice was 1feet off each fiddle yard. I bought a couple of locos and a bit of stock off him to get me going and back in the hobby but the stock wasnt his best or my favourite type of locos and I soon got frustrated with the running of them so ive built some of my own and Im still adding to it, Im adding a bit to one end of the layout and behind it with a scenic backdrop, it still works well thanks to Mike Turners wiring, only thing I want to do is fill in the frogs on the points as the wheels drop in, easy bodge just havent got round to it. only thing the bottom line doesnt work anymore, due to not having space but could do if I ever decide to take it to exhibitions, Id make the bottom a roundy roundy, but to be honest I cant be bothered with the hassle of taking it to shows. its nice and snug in its new setting, one other thing I want to do is build drawers under the layout to keep stuff in as its a bit of a mess under it at the moment but it still gets used and played with, just want some better running stock. Mike
  3. tip, instead of paint tins, use drawing pins to hold the track down while glueing then easily taken back out.

  10. sandside, how did you go about doing the rust on those 2 on the left? more 16t in the movies Alfie 1966, London not sure of exact location but wouldnt mind finding out
  11. either really Dave just to share hints tips and photos of building and weathering techniques and variations of the prototype. basically to give inspiration to others and to show off
  12. cheers Paul Im too young to remember anything of real interest, all I go by is pictures, dvds and recollections. although one of my earliest recollections is seeing a engineering train stabled near my house, I was only about 5 and I can still remember a brake van and some brown open wagons peeking out from under a bridge, I remember because I knew them as trucks from Thomas the tank and had never seen any up close before. all I knew were the local electrics. Im guessing they would have been ex 16tonners on ballasting, around 1987-88 this was.
  13. I cant recall ever seeing a bottom door 16t being used. any specific location they were used? and would they be kept together?
  14. think its best we keep to the theme of detailing models and research of the prototype. by all means tell us how many you have, but its not a chequebook modelling competition
  15. great responses thanks everyone for joining in seems to be quite some variation in weathering. whats everyones preferences for rust shades?
  16. some more, most of these are Chris Hewitt's
  17. if its ok, 2 of n15x's photos from old rmweb taken in Manchester from the university. http://www.rmweb.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=10967&start=25
  18. thanks Alastair mix of both then good thread on old rmweb with some nice images. http://www.rmweb.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?t=3092&highlight=scrap+tinsley
  19. I shall let you off they can be included too really nice. what colour for the brown rust are you using? whats peoples opinions on Bachmann versus parkside? when I drive past Hattons I think shall I pop in and get some Bachmann 16tonners, but then think that they are going to be converted to EM and you can build the chassis wider on the kit and you can also get EM wheels and bearings with them too so I never bother. Mike
