  1. the location at 7min12 in the first film looks very picturesque, and that coal they used for the steam locos doesnt look too good, presumably thats what the brickets were for? the second film, as I say I know little to nothing about european railways, typical british enthusiast probably. however I have seen pics of engines and trains over the years and wondered what they where, one was the TEE, doing a little bit of reading up on them, the German one sounds like some of the western diesels, Hymek and Warships. the TEE trains, and those French diesels in the first clip, do seem to have a really nice stylish look to them Mike

  8. looking at the wagon I was playing with with fresh eyes in the morning, doesnt seem as good, but can see improvement. rail Geoffrey Jones, note how the stripe is turning yellow, Ive noticed this somewhere before, because of the rust I imagine,
  9. not a very clear shot, but its interesting and its got 16t mineral wagons in it so it counts http://www.lostrailwayswestyorkshire.co.uk/images/Newspaper/Negas%20Examiner%2009-12-04.jpg
  10. I think I agree, its looking like its good for different textures, but I was thinking as I was practising that I could do with a base coat of grime, especially large areas like the inside.
  11. that first photo above was to show how it shouldnt look by the way the grey isnt right, looks ok on the bench with nothing around, but put it on the layout next to other stock and under the lighting and it looks far too blue. but as I say, this is just a practice of an old scrap body, Im still playing about with the gouachhe and starting to get the hang of it. ready for when I build a batch of 16tonners. also playing about with spare modelmaster decals to see how they react when using the gouache

  13. good stuff, been playing about with the gouache. this is how one side looks and how it looks when starting, if using too much water it moves about, but getting the hang of it now, easy to wipe away and try again. at first I was thinking uh oh! it drys quick tho and can build up layers. heres the other side after a bit of playing about, can still add more, and will need to work out best way to varnish it as even though it seems dry can still wipe it off. Im liking them so far.
  14. my first try of the gouache technique. so be kind using some burnt sienna, ivory black and red oche. the only thing I havent got which ive seen mentioned when using this is maskol, I havent got any so using water. if you put it on with the water it spreads out and goes into a sort of rust pattern. been rubbing off with a tissue and starting again and trying again etc. this is a quick shot after 5 minutes of playing about with it. I need to go and read up again on hows best to use it.
  15. well yours look absolutley spot on, im only playing about with what Ive got to hand. did you brush or spray your wagons? if spray whats the phoenix precision enamel stuff like to spray with? just looked jltrt also do a wagon grey. Im not so sure now with this colour comparing it to the pics, but as I say its all just an experiment.
  16. Ive primed the blue Hornby wagon in the above shot to give a comparison and took them outside for a photo in natural light. I remember when I first painted this jltrt roof grey on a diesel roof and I didnt think it looked right at first, but then when all the other colours where painted it looked right
  17. experiment using JLTRT br roof grey on a old scrap Hornby body, this was maroon plastic, primed with halfords grey which as pennine mentioned above is too dark. I think it looks good, hard to get colours in photos but in real life it certainly has that slight bluey turquoish tinge to it, its not a flat grey put it that way. im holding it up to the screen and it looks lighter in the pic. will experiment with weatering to see if it still looks ok etc
  18. ive got a can of JLTRT br diesel roof grey. which is quite bluish, not sure how far off that shade is. Ive just primered an old Hornby wagon body and will give it a try
  19. thanks, managed to find it on google earth, seems strange there are 2 signal boxes so close. looking the other way. some more, thats the same wagon as before with the black markings on the right and others that are related. iron ore wagons at Manton
  20. I think the shade the GCR windcutters are painted look a bit whiter aswel
  21. the wagon being unloaded reminded me of this shot, a little bit on topic, just wanted to include it http://www.rmweb.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=1281
  22. question regarding painting kit built wagons, or even RTR if they feel the need. whats peoples prefered way of painting the grey? best model paints to go for, or car based sprays, the grey seems to have a bit of a blue tint to it, are there any good matches for it? Mike
  23. some really nice archive footage. http://www.dailymotion.com/video/xfek7n_sncf-archives-la-raison-du-diesel_tech http://www.dailymotion.com/video/xgivqb_sncf-archives-les-tee-magazine-du-rail-19_tech Ive only watched these so far, there is probably more, I know very little about French railways but still nice to watch. Mike
