  1. Hi, I'm looking for any 009 rolling stock appropriate for an era 3 brewery/canal location - I really want used Bachmann stock with metal wheels but what have you got? Also if you have a 009 DCC loco I might be interested Thanks for reading.............. J
  2. Hi David, Wow thanks for the comments - the credit is really all down to the RMW members you have highlighted (and others @Zomboid@DCB) without whom I couldn't have done it and wouldn't still be enthused by the process. My character is such that "god forbid" it should ever be finished as I would then have to start again - I enjoy the journey and its evolution not the destination! Glad you've enjoyed the read - it is/was intended to help others in the position I was in app 7 years ago! Cheers J
  3. A picture (or 4) is worth a thousand words - a good day mocking up today - lots of fails before this seemed to come out about right - the 3no 00 sidings aren't great but the visual connectivity between them and the 009 I do like and those of you who are keeping up will see I have reverted to @chimers original position for the transfer platform/shed as the curves to the canal wharf work out much gentler. I can't do much more now until various bits arrive - more wire, insulated joiners, 1 more r/h turnout (for the additional canal siding) etc - my feeling as I stop is I would like the main central brewery building (arch) to be more involved possibly with a single track running through it which feels as though it should be do-able but it might be a step too far - whilst 009 track does do tight curves really well it still doesn't look right to me if they are too tight but part of the loop might be "persuaded" to do so.
  4. Peco response (verbatim) and track plan "The OO9 turnouts when used with DCC would require insulated rail joiners SL-311 on both frog rails of every turnout. The ST-405/406 turnouts plus the SL-E491/2/7 turnouts require no modifications for use with DCC. SL-E495/6 mainline turnouts have the option to be modified to give a separately switched frog if required, this being done via a polarity switch on the turnout motor. If you are unsure where to place track power feeds/rail breaks on your layout please send a hand drawn track plan of your whole layout, using a single line for a track, and about 1cm between tracks, and we will mark the plan to suit. The plan does not need to be to scale, schematic is fine."
  5. Agreed but In reality that loop is much bigger - 6 wagons are no problem I suppose the siding could accommodate a shed otherwise it will have to be assumed as being at the mine. thanks J
  6. Hi, Despite the intentions of my first post (which I am now ignoring) I'm posting this question on here as it is specifically 009 track related (Peco) I have bought 7no Peco (non "setrack", non "mainline") 009 turnouts refs SL-E491/2 - but these are Electrofrog are these OK to use for my purpose (I don't like setrack radii) and if so what needs to be done to them to make them work properly with DCC control - I am not an electrical expert having relied very heavily on RMW to help me with wiring but I am reasonably competent - I know how to wire the 009 zone (I'm pretty sure) but after extensive "googling" the turnouts seem to be problematic ??? As usual all/any help from those much wiser than me will be much appreciated............... EDIT - I have just found Peco Tech Dept helpline (Andrew) and they have already been very thorough/reassuring with their reply - I have sent a wiring diagram off for my 009 yard I will obviously post anything of use to others..................... Thanks J
  7. Good progress made today some track and turnouts arrived today so I've been "playing" - first observation is the ease of creating really smooth curves with the 009 streamline track (MUCH easier than with 00) but this is also code 80 not code 100 (as with my 00) so that probably also helps - don't I sound like I know what I'm taking about - still learning a lot. I have two layout choices (thanks @chimer) - the LH version is my preferred as it works better with the still to be relocated 3no 00 sidings in the "top" RH corner still to be done esp without the kickback. I have added a siding to the LH version as you can see. Also I have decided to move the proposed location of the "transfer" platform further to the left so as to achieve better separation between the 00 and 009 tracks on the LH side. I'm pretty decided on this now but not able to lay anything yet so all comments appreciated
  8. Hi, I've just found this topic - I am in awe of your progress esp without recourse to kits and will now keep watching as my 009 journey slowly starts on Hawkesbury J
  9. The sidings only need to hold 00 wagons so design will (sensibly) work around the 009 and I agree it isn't great as it is shown so far but we will get there Enough has been achieved now for me to be happy/able to commit and remove the 00 to create the empty space ........... The NG is to get slate from a mine arriving at the bottom rh corner of the baseboards to the canal and to have a transfer "interest/interface" with the 00 main layout. J
  10. Hi Chris, Everything is up for grabs but I think the sidings as they were laid out originally were operationally the same My sketch was only to get a feel ..............27" is the measurement you want 6 lengths of 009 streamline track and points just ordered all Peco not setback and not mainline - code 80 3 off RH and 3 off LH
  11. Yes the canal basin is pretty fixed and now the 3 relocated 00 sidings exclude your "destination" thoughts although that was in the mix very early on..... J
  12. Looking at this in more detail I think with the addition of a run around on the canal sidings it might be a good fit within the new space - your second attempt was perhaps too busy? I have laid out revised 00 sidings thoughts and then some plain paper and sketched in VERY roughly to Chris first plan - I think it looks pretty good and takes up about the right amount of space to allow for buildings etc. The foreground run around needs to be shorter so the turnout spacing works better and the transfer platform is obviously in the btm LH corner just out of sight but it tests the feel........... 6 lengths of 009 track and 6 turnouts (3LH 3RH) needed to get going J
  13. Thanks for this Chris I look forward to seeing your interpretation for the revised true space - don't want dual gauge but something that is truly independent but connected via a transfer platform solution Cheers J
  14. Hi Keith and thanks for this, I'm not a fan of Setrack in 00 so would instinctively keep clear anyway "live frogs" will be new to me but not a problem. I'm thinking RTR locos, to ensure DCC, isn't an issue but to make my 009 wagons. I don't have any illusions re costs as if anything on first review 009 stuff seems more expensive I know I will have fun as I already am! J
  15. OK - so I have made a start by removing all the 00 gauge track and placing what I think is a good solution for the 00 sidings taking up much less space with a suggested placement of the transfer track/platform - all the rest is open for 009 with a thought that it might access the layout via the gatehouse archway and an absolute given that the 009 must run along the wharf side - the rest is up for suggestions to achieve optimum operating potential? The transfer platform area might be better achieved by shortening the right hand 00 and aligning it with the other two 00 sidings and then allow the easier curves of the 009 to locate the transfer platform within that area rather than by the canal this would allow more 009 operational space esp for a kickback/run around of some value
  16. Hmmmmmm The crossover looks useful though?? I have asked if it works with Peco 00-009 J
  17. Wow thanks for that - I didn't even know it existed but its a bit pricey - esp the turnouts - I probably want to do something truly separate as part of the overall "experiment". Cheers J
  18. I do want to keep more of the 00 siding space than with my very first thoughts but if we accept that it won't directly serve the canal except via a transfer platform process then it feels as though the (3) 00 sidings could be accessed as now from the goods line but could lie much more to the left without needing the somewhat useless curves which do take up quite a bit of space. I think there is then scope to create a little more operational space within this even further improved 009 layout space with the only givens being the "destination " still being from/to the 45 deg corner and track with a kickback being tight to the canal edge - can you (and your software) now inject a bit more fun? This is not an academic exercise as I am going to do it - I only envisage one loco and 6-8 wagons which I am actively sourcing. Continuing thanks J
  19. Just a crude measurement diagram of the potential 009 space to help others (other than @Chimer) Hopefully its easy to understand the hatched area is the max space available for the self contained 009 - assuming the shortening of the 2 parallel 00 sidings as above and now the complete removal of the "top" 00 Canal side siding and that it arrives/departs from the 45 deg baseboard corner
  20. Hi "Narrow-gaugers" I hope this idea works .......I'm not trying to start a new thread here but to ask those of you with an interest from this forum to engage with my main "Hawkesbury" thread as I'm trying to add an 009 element to the main layout and would really appreciate some informed input. The objective is to trial 009 as a possible start to a complete layout rethink/rebuild next winter (I generally only model in the winter (Oct-Mar) months). IMHO it will devalue "Hawkesbury" if this question becomes a topic in its own right so I will keep my 009 questions on there as the mix of gauges will probably be of interest to a wider audience. If anyone has any spare 009 track and turnouts (4m and 3 mixed turnouts??) so I can play about with track please PM me Cheers - this might be the beginning of a new era for me. J
  21. I have just asked Andy to move it so "we" get more input J
  22. Hi Andy,

Could you move "Hawkesbury" into the layout design section please as the current discussion is about introducing 009 into the layout and where it is - it isn't getting much member engagement - suggested by @Chimer

Thanks and well done with the last few days work.

    Julian

      Hi Andy,

Two questions when you have time...

How can I access my older topics - I cant seem to get past 5 years - not a major issue just wondering if it can be done...............

Is it possible to access photos for a member/topic I am looking for inspiration for my 009 project and would love just to be able to flick through loads of members photos and even better if these could be subject specific - can it be done.

      Cheers

      J

  23. Perhaps a compromise might be out there somewhere?????? I don't want to lose all three 00 sidings so perhaps just losing the "top" one and stop trying to link the canal and the 00 might work. If the top one is removed completely there is a reasonable sized space if the 45 deg corner is the focus - thoughts??
  24. Where I'm at now with my thoughts is best shown in photos/sketches The 2 photos show the current scene with all buildings etc removed The first sketch is of the current track layout as photos The 2nd sketch is my thoughts of a way to logically introduce 009 by relaying and shortening the "top" 00 siding and introducing a transfer platform. Then shortening the two other 00 sidings (to roughly where the wagons are lined up in the 2nd photo) to give some "breathing space". Then to get in a respectable radius'd curve from the bottom r/h 45 deg baseboard edge/corner with a single narrow track notionally coming from a quarry etc with a headshunt/return (using a r/h turnout) at the top to either facilitate load transfers from/to the 00 tracks or to get alongside the wharf and load/unload the waiting canal boats Thoughts?? Jumping ahead - I'm going to make the 3 or 4 009 wagons so advice on kits would be good and also I would like to try making a loco/shunter but it must be DCC - again any thoughts please (RTR loco thoughts also of interest) J
  25. Just at the moment rather than pondering the benefits of trialling 009 I'm pondering the loss of quite a lot of 00 sidings and thinking about just having a single track to the canal for some 009 fun coming/going from/to the 45deg baseboard corner? J
