  1. In the programme the 9F is coupled up to a long line of loaded stone wagons (IIRC) and off it steams! The whole series used to be on iPlayer in the "Steam Days Collection", but sadly not now.
  2. Thank you for helpful replies. One sheet of good hardwood ply obtained from http://www.empson-sons.co.uk/ of North Lincolnshire, very helpfully cut up for me. I am now commencing assembly of a small "practice"baseboard which will have a rolling road and curved track so I can check clearances and practice track laying and ballasting.
  3. Hi, I hope you can put up with this rambling question. if I wasn't on the autistic spectrum maybe this wouldn't bother me, but... When planning a layout, can I just substitute 300mm for every foot and 25mm for every inch, or does it need an exact conversion? So can a minimum 3 foot radius become 900mm rather than 914.4mm? And instead of asking a timber company to cut the plywood into 2 foot wide strips, should I ask for 600mm or 609.6mm? (Should I expect the timber people to cut to the nearest mm? Or less or more precise? I am assuming that it is as quick for them to set their saw to 609mm as it is to 600mm (I am aware of the difference between accuracy and precision)) And as plywood comes in nominal 8 x 4 foot sheets ( 2440mm x 1220mm ), do I ask for them to be cut to 1200mm long as opposed to just using the width of the sheet? You need to allow for the kerf, so you can't actually get four 2 x 4 foot sheets out of a piece of plywood. So does mean 600mm x 1200mm would be the way to go? In OO, if it will go round 3 foot curves and the train will propel over that radius, is it safe to say the slightly tightly 900mm will be OK? I think I have answered my own questions, but I would like some confirmation? Thank you in advance
  4. There was an interesting report on CNN about the Ukrainian Railways control and how they keep the railway running. Here is the web article version https://edition.cnn.com/2022/03/14/europe/ukrainian-railways-war-intl-cmd/index.html (similar but different to the BBC article linked to by RichardT above)
  5. Hi. Back in November 2020 it was said "We will look to offer variants in our usual kit style, with a mix of etched and cast metal, with 3D print. Currently planning: 1) Lambton cut down cab. 2) GWR riveted tank conversion." Is this still the intended plan? For the GWR conversion the main things appear to be safety valve bonnet/cover, front footsteps and rivets on the tanks (are the tanks actually different in shape/size or is it just a change to rivetted construction?) and number plate etc. Thanks, Flocky
  6. Thank you. I will remember that, hopefully will come in useful sooner than later
  7. To assist others who are interested, further discussion from January 2022:
  8. Thank you for the videos. This and Bradfield are inspirational. May I ask, what you used to fix down the ballast? I don't think you said. As you went baseboard, carpet adhesive, laminate underlay foam, carpet adhesive, track, I wondered what you used to fix the ballast? And how has this affected running noise? Best Wishes and stay safe, Flocky
  9. http://www.johndaymodels.co.uk/our-models/figure-scenes/ The picture is no earlier than 1947, so you are not necessarily restricted to 1920's figures
  10. I think you need to be a bit more specific... Doors will vary according to function and location , and have probably got bigger over time. An entrance door to a hotel will likely be bigger than an entrance door to a terraced house, for instance Railway carriage doors have definitely got bigger over time...
  11. It would appear that from 2014 to 2021 minimum wage in the PRC increased by about 40% (though I hope the people who make these models are on more than minimum wage). [https://tradingeconomics.com/china/minimum-wages] 140% of £24 would be £33.60 This does not include the effect of currency exchange rates.
  12. I've been using one of these https://www.goldenvalleyhobbies.com/gvb2boo-golden-valley-hobbies-oo-gauge---back-2-back-wheel-gauge-144mm but plastic is probably not ideal in the long run. I may well acquire a 00 Gauge 'intermediate' back to back gauge, so thanks for that!
  13. For a newspaper website article, this seems to be a very positive article https://www.swlondoner.co.uk/life/03012021-on-the-right-track-meet-the-enthusiasts-behind-model-railways-in-south-west-london/
  14. Hello. I was wondering what prototype the Mainline (Palitoy) 24t hoppers are based on? And how accurate were/are they? Models like this https://www.hattons.co.uk/497791/mainline_37162_po14_12t_24t_hopper_wagon_in_br_brown_pre_owned_like_new_imperfect_box/stockdetail.aspx I seem to remember seeing some pictures of real life wagons that were similar, but can't remember where. What can the collective wisdom of rmwebbers come up with? Thanks
  15. Hi, I am wondering about particular Dapol wagons such as these https://railsofsheffield.com/groups/3295/advent-calendar-day-11 How do they compare to current Bachmann and Oxford offerings? Are they "in a similar league"? ie are they dimensionally accurate versions of a particular prototype? Details? Brakes etc? Liveries (fanciful/from an earlier era/accurate)? Running abilities (weight/wheels/droopy couplers)? Have to confess I have tended to steer clear of Dapol (and Hornby) opens so far... Thanks

  17. As of December 2nd 2020: Series 1 has just started to be shown on the "Yesterday" channel on Monday evenings, and series 6 is on Channel 5 on Thursdays at 8pm (in the UK). The Congo Atlantic Ocean Railway (s1 ep1) was definitely extreme in 2012! Don't know what's happened since!
  18. I know, brain not working today! It was Re6/6 [brain really not working after managing half a day at work as part of a phased return after a long illness] Also I can't remember if the preserved wagon was already mentioned above? https://www.societavenetaferrovie.it/carro-21-83-21-48-963-3-fb-1931-sagoma-inglese/ Apologies to jonhall who linked to it on post 8 on page 1 - I thought it was posted before but I couldn't see it for looking!
  19. Actually, perhaps the two models I found are closer to the pair in the photo than the Roco models posted by Re6/6 although the sides and ends are not planked. I wonder what 'scale' Roco used for these?
  20. What search term are you using to find the Roco models please? If I search for "Ghkks" I get a long wheelbase van with flat sides (as in https://www.hattons.co.uk/326315/roco_4300s_covered_goods_wagon_of_the_fs/stockdetail.aspx) and if I search for "fb" I get a similar grey van that the Roco website describes as "short wheelbase" and 133mm long, but the picture is of a long wheelbase van? ( https://www.roco.cc/en/product/243430-76600-0-0-0-0-0-003-1/products.html) ?
  21. Apparently they were "rescued for posterity" by someone who "... worked for the former British Railways (Western Region) publicity office at Paddington in the late 1950s and early 1960s" and stashed them in his loft... Seems to be some cracking stuff from the '30s to the' 60s.
  22. All interesting stuff! Unfortunately myself and family have all had covid-19; fortunately we are all on the mend, but it will be some time before I can get on anything!
  23. Thank you all. I am going to get Preserved Locomotives of British Railways 19th edition for now, although my son might also enjoy the Ex-BR Diesels in Industry book. He enjoys reading the "potted histories" and using the photos to make fantastic drawings (about a year ago he became a better drawer than me). If he is going for underlining numbers, the prototype HST will be the first one!
