    More likely the 'ruling classes' weren't MENSA material and considered it unnecessary to teach their minions how to read - so they had to go to the effort of painting a symbol on their wagons in addition to lettering. Presumably, though, there were adequate 'super minions' trained to read tare weights, wagon labels etc.

    Like the floor/interior of the vast majority of wagons this would have been unpainted wood as any paint applied would soon disappear ......... the exception, presumably, would be the Bulleid window pressings used to line the ends of his cattle wagons.

    Would be interesting to compare with the Railway Mag's comments if/when Mr.Corbyn achieves his ambition of repeating Nationalisation ......... though it's not planned to happen on one memorable date !

    Well, we won't be getting claustrophobic feelings on the East Coast for much longer ............ and then, no feeling whatsoever in our bums beyond, perhaps, Welwyn. But that's not the difference ( on 4308 ) I was trying to highlight.

    Ah ..... https://www.warwickshirerailways.com/gwr/gwrls212.htm ..... easy enough to find. I THINK there's an 'E' prefix between 'SOUTHERN' and '725' so the loco was painted before 1931 - but it's not pristine so 'mid-thirties' will do ! ...... presumably only a relatively light train was worked north : certainly in later years an 'Arthur' would be the smallest loco you'd expect to see on an inter-regional - but maybe they were lighter in the thirties.

    Sounds like it would be 'difficult' to remove the 'blisters' and return the old girl to original appearance - presumably there's some sort of segmental bearing in them as a huge French traction motor on the middle axle would preclude any sort of centre pivot.

    While a goods brake might be a fairly natural follow on to the van, I think any speculation that choice of a goods vehicle might be influenced by the 'D' is misplaced .............. while it's unlikely this printing technology is capable of producing a full blown passenger vehicle yet ( what would you choose as a one off, anyway ? ) NPCS should be possible - and I'd vote for an SECR Special Cattle Van as they, too, lasted into BR days.

    Could have said exactly the same myself - though I'd probably use the term 'Bunch of volunteers' ( upper case B ). Anyway ...... spot the difference ! Incidentally ....... should this thread be in the 'Preservation' area ?
