Next a bit more working out of next areas and signal testing etc including the next tunnel entrace of the lower outer loop that rises slowly from under plaftorm 1 upto the main line, i love rails not to be level, and we all watch the incline slowly climb and pull away to the left etc when looking out of a window Calvin Streeting
  2. ok lets answer some of those q's: I recognise the pub? <-- thats ideotypical 1: the flag stones are old wills pavement sheets 2: for the track planing i use anyrail mainly and Autocad (as once a draftperson by trade) the layout sits in a room about 4M long and it protrudes about 1M min and up to 1.5 at one end sitting on a set of cupboards i built for storage etc. a good CAD plan helps alot for latter planing of areas. 3: any chance of name change for the topic? Erm HOW The Layout is called EASTPOINT from the film Dark City as when an express train goes past wthout stoping the anouncments state "this is the express to shell beach" as small thing that only some film buffs will notice, as i like the little things like that. And next step was to finish house windows all still by hand, roofs and paint this small 1foot sqr part of the town, again with mostly only 4 base colours also i used old mains cable for drain pipes etc a vital part of models as adds more detail these are held with twice wraped and tistwed wire, to make the typical pipe junction look. I beleave modeling is all about shadows as shadows define shape (from my art/cad days). Windows on the terace houses had curtains etc placed on them with no intreior but divided internaly so different parts of the building could be light up at diferent times, ooh and i added a street lamp..   3. Under the shops the Platform 1 goes about 1 foot and i had to build all of this before i set about putting anything in its place above it. This also ment a starting signal was needed for Platform 2 built form old cap gun caps.. and more plasticard i also added a few random wires boxes and drainpipes to the wall. the final position of all this will make it hard to see but i think once light up and station canopy roof in place the right angle will make it visable in the way background. and the signal is fitted with LED's so it adds green or red light to the view Calvin Streeting Thats all for tonight more to come

Now the Tavern which i got given some windows for xmas, and that started the hey can i print these thoughts. the "Railway Tavern" which so looks like one also highlighted the fact if you put lights inside your going to need to model inside. this also applied to the shops etc and ment from now on i would factor that in from start.   6. Step Next : Next a small street, row of terace houses, old bookshop, and a "Railway Tavern" on the typical corner. Notice the curving of the houses as they climb the hill, which is very steap, but thats to add to the perspective all still by hand from plasticard, and cad drawings i made. At this point i stoped for awhile as thats ALOT of windows to make. etc Calvin Streeting

Step 24: Next came the town drawn, mocked up etc. A row of old shops with a pavement that slops up from road and railings, and a iron bridge. for one more entrance to tunnels these imploy both the higher at the back and also ever decresing dimensions to play with perspective. All of these where made from sheets of plasticard.. stil BP (Before Printer), this took alot of time, but in some ways thats the fun of it really calvin streeting

Step ERM 23: At the end of the road, part hidden by trees i wanted an old pub, this building has many layers, old stone chimney , old shiplap salvaged wood back and stone frontage including a arched window robbed from over the road. so a combinatition of plasticard, match and loly pop sticks, and carved clay, the name is the Smugerlers Inn and latter you will see old tunnels that lead from coast for night time activities. Step 21: after success of stone carving i got creative with The Old Monistry for the top of the hill, sitting inside a older stone circle. draw and formed of clay covered foam board each carved on both sides piece by piece, a labor of love for alot thats not 100% going to be seen. but thats modeling and i know its there. The Monistry slopes (in decay) to match the sloping ceilng of the room Step 22: glued the Individual panels one by one into place on a plywood base cut to fit hill top each window again formed from plasticard, inserted inplace and clayed in. as this was such a long thing to make i will post next a few more photos it hides sooo many nice views. and i was very happy with it calvin streeting

Step 17: oooh a lighthouse off to google and a few sketches latter i have a plan of atack for a light house (with working light) for the edge Step 18: This was constructed after some more googling from foam board frame and Air Dry Clay to get that rendered look, it also allowed me to try random stone scribing for the older light house foundations, as i said the layout should show time/history and the light house has 3. 1: a old stone base for what was more than likely a beacon fire, 2: A round tower for hight beacon fire placed on that with old flag mast. 3: A latter hexagonal light on top, The top sections where scratch built from plain platicard and wire. (BP: Before 3d Printer ) Step 20: carve the stone work and make plasticard strip roof, and windows etc. notice the old crane and metal scrape panel on the stone wall corner near entrance arch calvin streeting And onto next building
  12. Step 14: Next came the time to play with paints and landscape colours. I find its best to pick 3 or 4 base colours for most of the layout stone work, both in the landscape and buildings this keeps every thing consitant and blended better. I picked buff titanium, burnt umber, black and white. and those colours are still all i use but differnt mixes for different motors and stone, brick etc. (see first photo ) Step 15: the foam was then pastered, and the stratigraphy lines and landscape geolagy worked out, slighty devon/cormal coastal look at one end and industrial urban at the other. Step 16: onto buildings. calvin streeting
  13. Step 11: Onward to the tunnels and landscape i photo, draw, and mock up the lower tunnel entrances until happy and then came my first attempt at plasticard modeling. A Plain 1mm thick base thats then covered in a embosed stone. Step 12: The same process was repeated for the upper mainline, but this was done in a different earlier style as i wanted to show a railway and landscape that adapted over time (a theme i will show more off latter). Step 12A (I suffer from triskaidekaphobia long story): Build the landscape from foam insulation off cuts got from a skip . I like to plan the landscape as it would have been before a railway, and then cut in and fill. I dont like straight lines, and building are planned not to follow walls, rails etc. nothing is straight and i want people to have to look around corners to see things like Capability Brown who framed his hidden views.   14. Step 8: Work out what era etc.. I choose BR 1960's as ment i could run a wide range of loco's etc, and from then on i model in a ideotypical way, (meaning we all know when we see a station building that its a station even with no signs etc, like what makes a tree a tree it "ideo typical"). and with that i start to repaint and add lights to caragie sets using cheep ACDC convertors with a largish capacitor in guards van and simple led strip lights, useually in pairs a guard coach (to hide capacitor ) and normal and small connectors to connect caragies togther. Step 9: Add Lights VERY small SMD led's to fronts of locos etc. both these steps are ongoing as lots of old roling stock to re-wheel to newer standards and locos to sort chip and rewire etc. Step 10: PLAY WITH IT in the dark...

Step 4: Next came controler choice and for this i seleted with a Digitrax Zephyr Controller, Digitrax usb PR3, old PC, locoio's (Locoio HDL kits, as lots of choice and i get to solder them ) and rocrail as control software. Step 5: Build Locoio, Current Detectors, and Relay Controlers for seap point motors (i latter changed to servo as its way better, cheaper, and quiter). I staged the wiring of the blocks and points so i could get the best use out of each stage of deployment and build up slowly yet still run trains for testing and FUN (it is a train set after all). I even automated it once 8 blocks had detectors and 8 points where under PC control. Trains would pull into stations and back out again onto a different route. This was fun and whilst it ran i thought what else could i automate... mm Step 6: Got distracted and worked out Platform Anouncments of ariving and Departing trians, Learnt about full light control with time of day etc. and lots of other accessories:) Step 7: Got distracted with working out landscape and sight lines etc by taking photos and skecthing over ideas. A good way to get ideas, and then mocked up in old foam board, Paper, and even LEGO to get heights right etc. A Prosses i repeat at virtually each stage of the landscaping, ever changing tweeking as needed Calvin Streeting

Ok so i will post here I came back to model railways after a childhood spent modeling many layouts, mostly scratch built card or a few adapted kits, due to a modest upbringing you had to get creative or go without. This suitedme fine But about 6 to 5 years ago i came back to this hobby and after a bit of googling i found SO much had changed and thus i started to learn again completly from scratch. So: Step 1. out a flat baseboard and in a Trus and tackbed system, The plan drawn up makeing a large cental station, with loops at either end to allow trains just to run around and around Step 2. get the graidents and clearances right, running old locos round with temporary track and a old DC controller as i knew now that DCC existed that became my goal Step 3. learn about DCC blocks etc and work them out. Get the main track down using peco flexi track on woodland scenics track bed (as i want to run at night and noise is a problem i had as a child much to my parents anoyance ), parts like the yard can be worked out latter 100% and i did change a few things early on as its best to get layout flow right early and also run long test for derailment etc before i bury half in hills etc... (we have ALL been there) Calvin Streeting More in a sec i have ALOT of back log, 5 years of building so far and to answer Q: some parts are printed and some are plasticard as i got printer only 3-2 years ago
  17. 4-5 years in to building my layout i thought i really ought to publish some details etc.. (to inspire others, and share my experiance) Its a fictional station not a real place and is for the fun of modeling etc.. mostly scratch built and 3d printed nowdays so where is best place to put this info and updates etc Many thanks Calvin Streeting
