  1. Thatched roofs didn't cause poverty but cost-cutting resulted in thatched roofs; low-cost local materials and labour. The first part may be correct but not for the reason given. Most workers were employed by local landowners (notoriously niggardly) in tied housing (with as little spent on them by said landlord). Enlightenment came, in scale, from Quaker industrialists whilst agriculture has been generally lagging a century behind until grants and finance only became more accessible a generation and a bit ago.
  2. It's a point that the guides make on tours (particularly to children); rural poverty and lack of amenities. In nighttime mode the point is made about candlelight and moonlight.
  3. I'd have said that was your intent - which PMP was questioning further as you were taking the topic further into socio-economic cul-de-sacs. Keep it relevant please.
  4. Whereas you only need a few seconds on a keyboard to communicate what you are. Wind the typical ill-informed and ill-considered 'outraged on Facebook' attitude in please.
  5. They're still out in the wild. https://www.rmweb.co.uk/profile/362323-bradford-boy-56f/content/
  6. I prefer to travel First on one rather than Second on a Pendolino to the smoke even if it takes a little longer. Generally cheaper too.
  7. Hopefully, now, the driver affected, Robin Tandy, can look forward to a long and happy retirement from the railway. https://lovesalisbury.co.uk/2022/08/09/veteran-train-driver-retires-with-one-last-drive/?fs=e&s=cl Thanks to @PaulRhB for the alert.
  8. Certainly from my perspective it's a bit demoralising when we do post something for illustration or information purposes and we so often see what seems to be a race to pick fault with it. Often the comments can be rude or lacking any balance. This was the one that started it. It doesn't say something like "That's impressive and I'm not sure if it's me but..." And then our time gets taken up so, as I've chosen to do numerous times, we just don't post some of the things we've seen on our travels. It's easier. Anyway, we've been told the design is correct and, yes, the EP may be a little loose in that regard.
  9. For some reason it had been hidden but I can't see a recent report that triggered that. It's reinstated now.
  10. It's going to be safely locked back in the vault. :D
  11. I've just noticed the cab steps are little wayward in the pictures above; they easily moved back into position but it's undoubtedly from a lot of handling.
  12. I'd class myself as lucky to have one of these decoration samples on my desk for testing at the moment; it really is a pretty little loco. No worries from me looking at the shade of green either but it's big surprise, for me, is its performance which far superior to the Midland 0-4-4T. I've been running it with 10 Bachmann Mk1 coaches around a R3 circuit without any problem, just a hint of slip if you are too heavy-handed on the controller.
  13. That's the problem once you get past Wednesbury. Quinton is a bit posher than Whitmore Reans, Heathtown and Bushbury; did they wear slippers?
  14. Trust me, there wasn't any there, then. Not until the 80s riots and anti-apartheid marches in London.
  15. Given my inclination toward 1970s Black Country environs there was a lot of racist graffiti and NF symbolism around. Would I choose to reproduce it? Not a chance, I wouldn't wish to explain such hatred to a minor, modelling it would be no better than saying it.
  16. I have given answer, several times (including the very first post in the topic), explaining which subforums still show ads and that it's pending a fix.

  18. Competence and compliance are different things.
  19. Although I've already replied I'm even more annoyed to find it was you who I responded to (after you posted in a fresh topic rather than the existing one. I'm probably wasting my time twice over. Stupid me.
  20. Yes, I shared the images in this topic. Their reproduction is correct. Your choice though but it seems daft that someone would prefer to buy it if they'd produced it incorrectly.
  21. Sad news. It may sound an odd obituary but I did have several monumental run-ins with him including trying to conjure up a Texan obscenity law case against me, trying to get a show closed down the day before it opened and the most fantastical tales of military action and international assassination risks. But I came to like him if you gave as good as he tried to give. RIP John.
  22. I can only go from YOUR choice of words. Hence my response. Not impressed.
  23. I'm having a week off from dancing monkey duties. Why you expect to get a detailed response over a weekend is another matter. #notdoingyourselfanyfavours
