  1. Trouble is any viewer is entitled to rank what they see on some scale, say 1 to 5. I agree that there are RMweb users whose default is negative: 'cancel my subscription'; 'cancel my preorder'; never buy from 'X' again'; 'anything that X does is rubbish'. And there are some who clearly have some sort of bias that colours what they post. Perhaps too many. But you need to take care to distinguish those from others who are accurately identifying scope for improvement. I think that the point you are trying to highlight is the need for constructive feedback. If so I agree with you. But I fear that a heavy handed approach may not be the best way to achieve this.

  3. The programme is clearly a success - this Friday Gardeners' World is moving to 9.00pm to avoid a clash. Perhaps Monty will rise to the challenge and devise a 'Railway Garden' for 2019?
  4. It was fun! I do wonder whether it would benefit from a 'Bob Symes' type contribution. Someone with expert knowledge who could still nonetheless enthuse at the artificial - but fun - tasks that are the heart of the programme. But who would that be in 2018? I hope that it is a foot in the door for other things.
  5. Not really an answer to your question, but have you considered 1960s Modern Railways Magazines, especially after it went to A4 in size? So 1963 -1968? Not colour, but a good source of transition period atmosphere.

  7. Isn't weathering a modelling thing? if the 'underlying' model is good then surely that ought to be 'good enough' for any level of weathering?
  8. That sounds sensible to me. Particularly as if alternative bogies ever materialise they could be swapped over if required.
  9. Well said Clive. 999 out of 1000 times the intention is perfectly clear despite spelling, grammatical or technical errors. Let us stick to the modelling and prototype insights rather than marking homework.

  12. There is a nice colour photo of two (and a bit) milk tanks at West Ealing in 1961 on p478 of GWJ no 88. In 'filthy' livery (although the 'bit' is cleaner).
  13. Black and white only, of variable quality. The text provides only a very brief overview of the lines covered, which may be fine if that is all you are after. If I was faced with reducing shelf space in my collection they would be amongst the easiest to let go.
  14. Now that I have a copy I can agree that it is an excellent book, with a very systematic approach to the subject. Very much a 'directory' rather than a detailed history of the various vehicle types covered. Initially I was surprised that the book had hard covers. But given the intended scope of the series as a whole, and the ever increasing distance of time and first hand knowledge, I suspect the series will be seen as a definitive reference work.
  15. Well done. I think that your layout is a perfect example of how sometimes 'less is more'. Very few of us have the space to model landscape to scale - but we can model the interaction of a railway line and the landscape, which you are doing to perfection.

  18. Is it me or is the digital version messed up? I get to page 77 (Autocoach digital extra) and then it jumps to the Swindon Shed article in Traction, after which it stalls at digital page 88 (another digital extra).

  21. The sustainability of the hobby depends on a conveyor belt of new entrants. Where in these exchanges is any consideration of what a new entrant wants? Those of us in our 50s/60s/70s with sufficient disposable income are just cash-cows for the existing main manufacturers. Look at the threads on RMweb - 'I have 3 of this and want 5 of that'. '50% increase in price? Never mind, I'll still have a couple'. ££££££. There is a future - but it needs some thought.

  23. I did say 'probably'! My aspiration is to have a number of semi-fixed rakes of freight (and engineering) vehicles, reflecting the changes in vehicles used, and services provided, during the period 1957-66. Which is why I thought S&T, for use towards the end of this period (when commercial traffic was virtually non existent . But I would not be adverse to a 'newly introduced' non engineering version, particularly if the model is a good one. Are there photos of the use at Staines Central which you mention?
  24. As someone who aspires to model a secondary WR line in periods from late 1957 through to late 1966 this is something that I can welcome (probably in S&T guise).
