  1. For those like myself who haven't been to this exhibition before, but am seriously considering it this year, please could some details about car parking be provided?
  2. The Mrs placed an order recently with Holland & Barratt for various things including a couple of jars of malt extract (very sticky stuff).. When the box arrived there was malt extract oozing from one corner and you could hear broken glass if you shook it. Upon opening the box we found everything covered with malt extract, one very damaged jar, and plastic packets of other products that had been ripped open by the smashed glass. The box was dented so we think it might have been dropped at some point. OK so H&B could've packed the whole shipment much better as they'd only used a minimal amount of bubble wrap so perhaps on this occasion it's a 50/50 apportionment of blame. The complete replacement order from H&B came intact via another delivery company.
  3. It was but the service ended last weekend. I believe that in 2018 the service will be run with one of the railways 2 car DMUs. The only reason they weren't used this year is that they weren't ready, hence the hire in of West Coast Railways locos and the TC.
  4. According to the September 1992 to May 1993 WTT North Camp was served from Thames Haven with the route being Kew East, Staines and a run round at Guildford. The afternoon empties to Thames Haven retraced the inward route. It ran Monday only and Wednesday or Friday on an as required basis.
  5. Looking forward to seeing the attendee list, will help me to decide if I should wander over.
  6. The Holmthorpe sand working near Redhill was worked by an 08 in the early 80s, here are a couple of links to photos http://www.railpixtc.co.uk/80sArchive/1980-1984/1981/i-2DXGVXQ http://www.railpixtc.co.uk/80sArchive/1980-1984/1981/i-9M7JH79
  7. Well this is a real shocker for a Thursday night, or any night for that matter. I well remember Claws from his days at the Slough club and the fact that one layout owner forbid him from touching any of his rolling stock. A unique character and a loss to the worlds of prog rock and model railways.
  8. Not sure if this is the correct place for this request but as it's related to the SVR here goes. Does anyone have a copy of the WTT for the 2017 Diesel Gala that they no longer require? I've never been to the SVR, shame on you I hear you all say, but I would like to know how they operate the line under Gala conditions and the WTT seems the ideal source of information. Here's hoping. Nigel
  9. Wise advice to which a search in Google for 09.20 st.ives paddington brought up this page http://www.cornwallrailwaysociety.org.uk/st-ives-branch.html It contains, just in case you don't want to read it all, the following from a chap called Garth Tilt about a Saturday in August 1960 "The following morning I also went down to record the 0920 to Paddington, it too had both engines facing St. Erth. The coaches were a motley collection mostly ex.GW including a dining car. At this period the ‘Riviera’ ran as a separate train from Penzance at 10.00am. " I don't know what "motley" would relate to in terms of livery but it could add a bit of weight to what 34017Ilfracombe wrote at the end of his posting.
  10. In the book The Day Of The Holiday Express by Richard Woodley there is mention of an 09.20 departure from St Ives to Paddington, train A76, that started out with 10 coaches behind a pair of 45xx 2-6-2T engines. When the train reversed at St Erth an additional 3 coaches were added. The motive power was changed to a pair of D63xx diesels to Plymouth and then D810 to London. The book is all about services on the GWR on 9th July 1960 and does make mention of the fact that some coaching stock was only used occasionally and could therefore be parked up for long periods. Not really a definitive answer to your question but does give some background information that could be useful.
  11. What a large box for such a small wagon. When I get mine the packaging will be heading straight to the recycling bin, which might seem wasteful to some but I don't have a lot of storage space.
  12. In 1983 the fast Weymouth services were non-stop to/from Southampton in 67 minutes down and 68 minutes up. During the weekday peaks there were two morning and evening services that called at Winchester and that added 4 minutes to the down and 6 minutes to the up. Those were the fun days on the SWML i.e. REPs and TCs and sometimes 100mph running.
  13. OK so perhaps we can forgive the press for inaccurately reporting the time of the derailment. What's really interesting in some of the pictures is that the Wembley to Angerstein service has been allowed right round the Lewisham loop so that it's sitting at the last signal before Parks Bridge Jn. Realtime Trains shows it terminating at Lewisham at 05.31 and the now derailed train passing Parks Bridge at 05.28. Glad I've stopped commuting into London from Kent.

  15. I don't have any photos at this time but could take my camera when I go to the club next week and take some closeups. By "the back" do you mean the station approach side, as shown in photo DCSF0807 in reply 9 above?
  16. By way of an update I can report that during the summer of 2016 the 5 scenic boards we have were re-wired, the point motors replaced with servos and the control panel was wired up. In this limited form we were able to display it at our open day in July, one engine in steam and a few wagons and coaches. Recently we even had it running on DCC. Last night we erected the fiddle yard from The Summit, another of the Group's O gauge layouts, from the stillages following its recent outing to Warley. We then moved the Evercreech New baseboards into position so that we can start to work out what new woodwork will be needed to connect it to The Summit's fiddle yard. At a glance we may need 8 - 10 new running boards, one or two of which will have a viaduct. As the above was already planned when we were buying box steel section to make baseboard legs for another layout we bought enough to use on Evercreech New as well. It shouldn't take too much work to install them. As far as scenic work is required we plan to add new lightweight boards both front and back, 18 inches and 4 feet respectively, to create a wider scene. I believe that the long term aim for the revamped layout is to be able to accept invites to exhibitions. This might not be for a while so don't hold your breath. Sorry no pictures today but might be able to provide some as the project proceeds, if anyone's interested of course. Alternatively keep an eye on this Facebook page for updates https://www.facebook.com/yeovilmodelrailwaygroup
  17. The most recent development is a change of owner. I was lucky enough to bid successfully for the layout on a well known auction website back in the summer. Once the layout gets over to the clubroom I'm hoping to enlist some help from the electrical gurus in order to put in more feeds and sections along with servos for the points and a full control panel. I aim to get this done in time for our open day next July. On the rolling stock front I'm building some Network Rail bits to put alongside the workers and van as shown in post #55. I'm also building an RHTT, from a 3d printed kit, and have found some articulated tanker lorries which I'm going to say contain water to top-up the RHTT tanks. I might try to make a Sandite MPV if I get brave one day. I'll try to post some photos but don't hold your breath. Nigel
