  1. Well, I've now heard back from Dave Hammersley with an encouraging response, He can supply all the components I need such as correct bogies, underframe, roof details and buffers. He has confirmed what has already been alluded to, that the roof profile on the carriages is wrong, both in terms of cross section and width and his comment was that none of his vacuum formed profiles would suit. I have replied saying that @jonhall had managed to fettle a 34mm section to fit. so I would be looking at that a possibility. I will see Dave at the Stevenage show and take one of the body shells along with me and hopefully we can find something close that I can bodge. I'm guessing that the aluminium profile suggested by @Wickham Green would have the same problems.. Hey-ho.... Hugh
  2. Thanks @Ben Alder, I'm encouraged by that, I have a couple of T9s, 1 that should be ok as a runner (yet to be proved!) and another that has disintegrated around the motor housing. I've snapped up a couple of chassis off Ebay that should provide sufficient spares to make everything good with enough left over to supply a chassis for a stalled Triang L1 enhancement project. I have some spare wheels that came with the Ebay chassis as well, so I should be ok. 4 to 5 coach or 15 wagons will be plenty for my needs.. Thanks once again.. Hugh
  3. Thanks both. It's an obvious workaround but I'm still intruiged as to whether there is a lower limit on search strings, by accident or design! Hugh
  4. Is it possible that there is a minimum length of character string that one can search on? I've been trying to locate threads that deal with such topics as 'T9' or 'G6' or 'L1' for example, but the search returns no records - even though I know such threads exist? tia.. Hugh
  5. Resurecting an immensly old thread, @Ben Alder, did you get round to doing the wheel swap project? I have a T9 and would like to get rid of the traction tyres. I came across this thread by searching and would be keen to hear your experience. Did you have to do anything to the loco to improve traction after the swap to the non-tyred wheels? thanks in advance.. Hugh
  6. I am compelled to say again how much this thread has helped. What I really like is it hasn't descended into 'opinionated' positions, each calling the other wrong, something that one comes across far too often. It certainly wasn't my intention to start such a discussion but it really has been very helpful, so thank you all... Hugh
  7. Thank you Jon, that's all very useful. The roof sounds like it will be a challenge! But I'll give it my best shot... You've been very helpful Hugh
  8. Thank you @martin_wynne, your earlier posting is particularly helpful....
  9. Thanks, @Wickham Green. I have some concerns about the roof profile, as already pointed out by @jonhall. I was aware that the kit was less accurate in some respects than it could have been, but had not realised that the roof would be tricky. Jon, was it to do with the profile of the ends of each carriage not being correct? Can you say anymore about what you had to deal with? Sorry to pester you... Hugh
  10. Right, I've fired the email off as suggested. I'll let you know what the response is. When you built yours, how did you fit out the interior? Of the few photos I have been able to put together to work from, I have not yet managed to find anything that shows the seating arrangements. I assume central gangway with pairs of seats either side. Can anyone suggest likely source for that/those? thanks.. Hugh
  11. Thank you all. I seem to have provoked an interesting discussion - all of which has helped me greatly. If I've interpreted this all correctly, I should consider myself as having adopted the 'Intermediate' standards and that with my chosen track (Peco 75) and modern Hornby locos ('China' M7, 700, T9) I should have no issues. To be sure of that, I need to get the correct b2b gauge - such as this https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/312009342235 and ensure that everything adheres to that standard. The existing wheelsets I have for the planned rolling stock should also be ok, but will be checked with the b2b to be certain. As I say, I am a returning modeller from 30 years ago and, at that time, went down the EM route. But with modern R2R locos etc being of such high standard (compared to 30 years ago) and the abilty to buy code 75 track, rather than having to make my own EM, my decision was made.. Thanks once again.. Edit to add: Or indeed, the b2b here - http://www.doubleogauge.com/shop.htm
  12. Jon - may I just ask, did you give Dave@Roxey a list or did you just say, can you provide me with what I need? I'm not knowledgeable enough yet to provide him a detailed list without further reseach, resources for which, I'm not sure I have as yet... Hugh
  13. Thanks both. Nearholmer, that is of great help, it makes a clear distinction between the and 14.8mm and 14.4mm wheel sets I saw that raised the question in my mind. So, to get to specifics, with my chosen track of Peco Code 75 and the 3 Hornby locos I already have on shed, where should I be looking? - At the 'Finescale' dimensions? As I say, I am about to embark on a period of stock building and want to get my wheel standards right fro the start. For instance, I have a number of Kean Maygib wheels in stock that go back aways (probably predating these standards) Should they be hurled into the night and replaced? I need to get a back to back gauge at least and want to get the 'right' one... thanks for the responses so far...
  14. Perhaps an oxymoron but please bear with me. I was at the Peterborough show at the weekend and was after some wheels for a brake van I have been building. I should say that I'm a returning modeller after an absence of many years and things have changed! I have in the last few months acquired 3 locos - all current Hornby offerings - and have embarked upon a winter's construction of rolling stock. I already have snapped up some Peco Code 75 track and points and have plans well advanced. My question is, I am now confused as to what wheel and back-to-back standards I should be looking for. Or does Finescale refer to flange dimension. Sorry for the simple question but I have been left confused after seeing different standard wheelsets at the weekend, both purporting to be 'OO'. Can some kind person put me right? thanks in advance.. Hugh
  15. Thank you Guy. That's the bogie choice confirmed then, and I've noticed a pack of Fourmost/ABS ventilators on Ebay that would probably fit the bill.. Can anyone confirm that the roof section for one of these Roxey kits: https://www.roxeymouldings.co.uk/product/80/4c95-lswr-56ft-corridor-brake-third/ would be right? It does seem to be the right section? I've been trying to track down a copy of the Mike King book on Push-Pull sets, but the one at £450 I found was a bit too strong as far as I was concerned. Even the £55 quid is a bit out of reach, but I live in hope that a reasonably priced one might turn up..
  16. Through the kindness of a fellow RM Web member, I now have a part constructed Jidenco Push Pull set. As you can see from the photo, they are to still to be completed but I am short of all the necessary components. I'm hoping that the experience and knowledge of this group will be able to help. I will be modelling them as they were in the early 1930s. I assume that by then they will have been converted to electric light so at the least the underframe will require battery boxes and dynamos. The vacuum chambers for the brakes are already fitted. I think the roof profile is the 'standard' approach of LSWR with a semi-eliptic profile and the bogies, Fox lightweight with a transverse spring. I will also require roof fittings so LSWR Torpedo vents is I guess what I need. I am planning on going to the Stevenage show in January where Roxey have a stall and a hoping that Dave @ Roxey Mouldings maybe willing to sell the individual components, if I can pre-order. So, my request, chaps, is can you help me with preparing a list? Also, can anyone point me to any good diagrams or photos that I can work from. I do have some that I have scraped from a *lengthy* thread on the Kernow models from 'another place' but still need some more detail. Particularly I have no idea of the interior, so any images of that would be very useful. Indeed, that's a point, I will need to acquire interior fittings as well... Any help or suggestions very gratefully received.. Hugh
  17. Can anyone advise a source of (roughly) the right colour? My immediate port of call, Precision, shows this... https://www.phoenix-paints.co.uk/products/precisionrailway/bigfour/sr/14p90 But that looks a rather 'muddy' brown to my eye, though this is a relatively cheap laptop I am using and I suspect colour rendering of the screen is not its strong point...
  18. Thanks Barclay. That ties up with other info I have had, though that suggests the inner partition was only red from half height to the top. ie, where it was concealed behind the verandah wall, it still remained the brown of the rest of the body. That could be tricky to mask up and paint!
  19. Thanks - that's very helpful, I would have missed the 'half height' aspect of the partition... As to what colour? Well, mine will have faded from the original colour... That will be my excuse, anyway... :o) Hugh
  20. I hope I'm asking this in the right sub-forum. I've nearly finished a Falcon brass/Jidenco ex-LSWR 20ton Brake van and I just need to clarify something regarding the livery. I'm aware that the ends of the van were painted a shade of red but just want to check, would that have included the inner 'partition that forms the end of the Guards compartment as well as the outer Verandah panel. I think yes, but it's just as easy to check to make sure.. many thanks in advance...
  21. CGW Number and nameplates for the following: Schools Class 932 - Blundells King Arthur, N15 Class 740 - Merlin Just for the cost of the postage. SInce returning to the hobby a year or so back, I have been in receipt of real generosity from members of RMWeb, the least I can do is put something back... Hugh
  22. No problem Neil, it will have to be just a little while later today, the scans are on another computer... Hugh
  23. Yesterday proved a very worthwhile day out and I enjoyed the Royston show very much. I took the opportunity to spend time with Derek Bunting and his B&B couplings and have come away with a couple of sets of etchings to make up for the rolling stock I hope to get made over the winter.. I also spent some time talking with Geoff Haynes about painting and lining and I would like to publicly thank Geoff for his time and generosity in sharing his methods and advice. Although I'm not quite ready to set about painting just yet, I do need some advice on livery. My era is early/mid 1930s, so we are talking 'large logo' SR era. My question is I know that the van ends were painted red but would that have included the inner partion or just the actual end of the brake van? It may be that there is a better place on RMWeb to ask such a question so, as still a 'novice' here, if any advice is forthcoming as to which sub-fora that should be, I'd be happy to hear suggestions.. thanks..
