Waiting at my beloved Lewes station in the Indian temperatures a few days ago, I remembered this 'thread' and snapped this detail: It is not St Pancras, but to me it epitomises the carefully crafted beauty of this era (by Mowlem's, I believe). Who, now, is using brick so beautifully and laid so well? It is a surprise to see anything modern other than stretcher bond now anywhere. Sorry I did not have time to pop out and photograph a few flint and brick-edged buildings as well. Edit: Many thanks to Nick Holliday: it was Jas. Longley's who built Lewes station (not Mowlem's). -

Lastly, three from Glasgow. In view of this city's loathing of its older architecture, I expect they have been demolished by now as well. The first two share the 'corner' plot. I think the latter might be a 'Greek' Thomson. -

A couple from London and Bournemouth; the F.C.O. is well known, and it seems impossible to capture its grandeur, but I bodged an attempt at an elevation of the Durbar Hall. Not the best shot of the Royal Bath Hotel, Bournemouth, but it captures the wonderful roof-line... And the wonderful Russell-Cotes Museum: -

Perhaps a few from my albums might be of interest, I hope. First some good Sussex buildings, a 'before and after' on Brighton's Queen's Road (it is at times like these one dislikes trees!), and one of Mrs. Dudeney's residences in Lewes: I never did get a decent photograph of the derelict master-piece on the Queen's Road opposite, 'The Temple', before it was demolished. The loss of this beautiful building has a lot to answer for my subsequent devotion to 'old ruins'... -
Just wanted to make a discreet plea to raid all available photo archives for inter-regional vacuum-braked goods trains, and anything 'non-block' that served Crawley New Yard, please, as content. Mind you, I will buy copies anyway. Keep up the good work. Thanks.

Dreadful news! Please do NOT close the 1S76.com web-site down, if possible. You are providing much information of value to us all. I know nothing about web-page compositing, but if it is possible to move it to a different host (I use Heart Internet for my e-mail, and have no complaints) I hope I will not be alone in my gratitude for its preservation. Or you could just print it all in a book for us to buy!

Traffic between Iran and U.K. in VIXs and IIB 'Inter-frigo' vans.

Thanks to you both for your help. I had not heard of the 'mozzarella flow'. I know the IIB Inter-frigos got around a lot, but was not sure what freight to/from Iran they would have carried. I do like the idea of dried apricots and nuts winding their way towards the U.K. Best wishes. -
Sorry if this question is thought to be more suitable for the 'Asian Railways' board, but does anyone know what goods were carried in the VIX and IIB ferry-wagons between Iran and the U.K.? I believe offal was carried in one service - perhaps not from Iran - to Pedigree Pet-foods at Melton Mowbray (Shannon, 'Wagonload', 2006, p.51). I read on this site somewhere someone saw a VIX in Iran once. I appreciate the cargo would not have been spices, saffron, carpets, and rice, but if anyone knows what the traffic was in these most romantic of wagons, and how often, I would be grateful. Thanks as ever for giving this your consideration.

Yep, I am not sure of the stops, but this would be one of the off-peak (hourly?) Hastings/Eastbourne to London Victoria services. Judging by the distance along the platform, in a 4+4 formation as well. Wasn't Hastings-Brighton '18'? It is all so long ago, I forget - '4x' for East coast-Brighton I think - but I hope someone has a set of WTTs to give us chapter and verse. -
