Looks like someone 'hard' gave it a bit of a kicking!?

Sadly it looks very similar to how my brand new one came out the box. The general build quality was poor, but what allowed the real damage was the locos are bolted to an MDF board - but the parts on the loco that the bolts fit are flimsy plastic so the heavy loco just rips away from it, despite the foam around it. The should have put the tapped holes in the metal chassis blocks instead of the plastic keepers, would have saved them a fortune in refunds.

Imagine if Cyberdyne Systems built a model railway! 😲

Would certainly give new meaning to "This train terminates here"...

An elderly loco and an elderly, limited DCC controller.  In an elderly looking box!

    Happy New year everyone.

    Tony,

I believe there is a current issue with loading images.  Andy is aware, but resolution will not be until after the holidays.

    Alan

Ah, so it's a New Year Resolution then?

I thank you! I'm here all year.

DBS checks can only be carried out in certain circumstances where the person will be a:

    Childminder

    Social Worker

    Medical professional

Most people on railways do not come into contact with minors so this is a bit of a red herring. Its worth adding you that on many railways the structure means volunteers do have a 'manager' be that Station Master, Gaurds/Signaling/Loco Inspector etc.

Enhanced ones yes, basic ones can be applied for by anyone.

    Hello folks,

I have what I suspect is a really obvious question about D6704 but as I can't find it in the previous 300-odd pages, I'm going to ask anyway: I bought a DCC ready version of this loco and fitted a Dapol Imperium 3 decoder. Should I expect the various lighting functions to be on the same function keys as the chart that comes with the loco, which is for the sound version? The reason I ask is that I can only get the head codes and tail lights to work. I can't get the cab lights to work nor any of the other lighting modes. However, I'm not sure whether it's an incompatible decoder, a fault or I'm just using the wrong instructions!

As an aside, this decoder isn't a particularly good fit, being slightly wider than the space between the various connectors on the PCB. Whilst the loco works ok, lighting possibly excepted, I'm not overly keen on this arrangement and so the question then becomes, is there a better decoder for the space? I'm not looking for sound.

    Anyway, any advice gratefully received.

Makes me wonder if the Dapol decoder doesn't match the DCC specs as that includes the size of the decoder itself?

But yes, for the price, using one setup specifically for that model is a no brainer really :)

Can anyone suggest where I can get 4mm scale etched builder’s plates from.  Ideally I need oval North British/Glasgow plates but given the writing will be illegible then any oval plates will do e.g. GNR plates.

    TIA,

Fox, or 247. Best ones I have seen were from Modelmaster but don't touch them with a bargepole...

I've contacted rails suggesting that this kit is actually an 0-6-0  and is in the wrong box they have just replied telling me I am wrong. Thing is I'm not wrong...

Interesting as the response I got is that they are aware and are arranging to amend the listing. Not sure if that was in reference to it not being a Q1 or it being £100 over the new price (or both).

  9. I've had to access to quite high security areas at times, be it HMG, HMP, RAF, and a particular favourite, USAF.

Having MP5/M16/Whatever the literal weapon of choice was,  trained in your general direction whilst sniffer dogs and so on go through your vehicle (which is full of tools that could be considered weapons!) was always great for the anxiety. What cracked me up on some sites was when the person escorting me wasn't allowed somewhere but I was - "just go and fetch key number 25 from that rack over there then bring it back then we can go and open area 51 which I will have to watch through the window". Very weird.

I'm amazed I haven't had to sign the Official Secrets Act.

I briefly worked in a power station that was being dismantled in the 70's and there was a lot of asbestos to be removed. Watching through an observation window there was a gang of men in full protective gear carefully sweeping and bagging the asbestos dust. Every hour the foreman would shout, "Smoke time lads". At which the cleaners took off their masks, sat on benches surrounded by the asbestos they had swept into piles and enjoyed their smokes.

One of the things we had to check on operative's masks was for holes they had made to poke a ciggy in. That and holes is the tyvek suits so they could get to the pack and lighters.

In this day and age, nobody should be sweeping asbestos debris. Fortunately (for once) the rules and guidances are a LOT stricter.

  11. When I was site based we would regularly work on electrical equipment (lift motors etc.) - which had to be clearly isolated and a certificate stating it was, and an emergency contact number provided before we could commence.

So when I turned up at a rather large Government building to do some work within one of the lift motor rooms, I was a tad surprised to see that the "isolation" consisted of a level being switched to the off position, and a post-it note stating to switch it back on when done.

That job did not go ahead that day.

Thinking ahead to a future modelling project of a rake of rectangular tanks, I came across this thread as I was reviewing my collection of photos of them.

This is the underside of Lancashire Tar Distillers rectangular tank number 568, showing the discharge valve.

    LTD_568_Mangapps_underneath.jpg.40d87767ce41b71711a0a513670d9bab.jpg

So while some rectangular tanks may have had to be siphoned out (as asserted in previous posts), others could be emptied from below.

This tank had built-in steam heating coils, and it's one that I will be modelling in O gauge based on heavy modifications to a Slaters kit (it needs stretching in 2 directions I think!).

    Cheers,

    Mol

    Mangapps?
