  1. Some more class 50's this morning and I will make no apologies for 50044 hogging the limelight - it was my favourite member of the class 50037 Laira scrapline 15th September 1991 50041 Salisbury 10th June 1989 50041 Taunton 21st August 1989. The loco had failed on that mornings Exeter to Paddington loco hauled service. 50042 Salisbury 28th November 1987 50043 Yeovil Jn 23rd February 1990 50044 Salisbury 10th June 1989 50044 Exeter 24th February 1990 50044 Plymouth 24th February 1990 50044 Salisbury 27th February 1990 50045 Sherborne 27th February 1990 Iain
  2. According to some of the Westbury drivers and shunters, the green / yellow Bardons looked good in the car park, on occasion! You need to do one with a squashed Skoda Estelle underneath it! Unfortunately, I can't find a photo of said incident online
  3. Some more class 50's from my collection 50029 is seen at Salisbury with a stopping service to Waterloo 23rd August 1989 50030 in the loco bay at Waterloo 10th June 1989 50031 runs around its train at Oxford 10th June 1989 50032 at Oxford August 1988 50032 at Plymouth 25th February 1990 50033 at Newquay 23rd November 1991 50034 arrives at Salisbury 28th November 1987 50035 (according to my notes) approaching Ruscombe April 1990 - I cant readily see a crest on the loco, so could it be another class member? 50036 at Ruscombe April 1990 50036 at Salisbury. 1991 The loco then ran round its stock, before working a stopping service to Waterloo. The loco failed prior to departure, requiring a couple of large cans of oil, being wheeled into the loco, I suppose raising the oil pressure in the engine. It didnt stop it reaching 3 figure speeds between Basingstoke and Woking! Iain

  9. Olivias Trains can work wonders fitting sound and stay alive chips into small tank engines. This is some work theyve done for me this week: Again, usual rider, Ive no connection to this business, just a satisfied customer.
  10. Many thanks Baz Royston was from Trowbridge - as am I. A few of the other names I remember. My initial contact was through John Bishop, who was also from Trowbridge. I remember my first trip was to Merseyside and Manchester, then I think Humberside / Lincolnshire - was this the trip I have slides taken at March depot? (In my slide scans thread) Then there was an East Midlands trip and, lastly, a trip to London depots - I have photos taken around Stratford (both depot and works) and Old Oak Common. On one of the trips, we had to take someone back to South Wales and the minbus ran out of fuel on the M4 somewhere between Bristol and Bath - I dont think I made school the next day! Iain
  11. Back in the 1980's, when I was just a mere schoolboy, I used to belong to a group called "The Western Rail Society". They used to run mini-bus / coach tours to places of railway interest, for all us number crunchers. I only went on 4 or 5 trips, but remember, with the aid of depot permits, scratching lots of cops! The only thing is, I no longer have the notebooks taken on these trips and only a handful of dodgy photographs, taken on an old Zenit B camera. Does anyone else remember this Society? Were you a member of it? Do any of the newsletters still exist? (crammed with lists of numbers seen on trips). The internet seems to draw a blank, hence my request. thanks Iain
  12. Its about time we started on the one class that I have so far not covered - the 50's. Most of my images will feature NSE liveried machines or those celebrities that emerged at the end of the classes time on BR. I hope you wont get bored The first 2 locos in the class - 50001 & 50050, Totnes, 25th February 1990. 50001 Laira scrapline 15th September 1991 50002 Westbury (diverted Waterloo to Exeter service) 22nd November 1987 50002 Salisbury 23rd February 1990 50002 Laira scrap line 15th September 1991 50005 Westbury, passed by 47430, April 1989 50005 Plymouth 27th August 1989 50005 Exeter St Davids 1st March 1990 50007 & D400 arrive at Exeter St Davids 24th May 1992 50007 Chester 13th June 1992. 16. Caradoc: You've obviously never been in a Control Office when a major incident like this is on the go; Getting to the bathroom is a luxury achieved only by leaving constantly ringing phones unanswered. And as for something to eat, forget it; Unlike Drivers and Signallers, Controllers do not (where I worked anyway) have any form of guaranteed breaks booked during their shifts, including 12 hour ones. Just to correct one point - Not all Signallers, including ones working a 12 hour roster pattern, get a break during their shift.
  17. Very interested in this program, after visiting the railway last September. As with others, i got a bit fed up with all the jeopardy and appalling continuity. If you havent been to the North York Moors, it is well worth the visit. For me, it was like an "up North" version of the Bluebell - excellent!! Some nice big engines, some real coaches (Gresleys) and some steep grades, meaning you get plenty of noise from the front end. The scenery is stunning, Whitby is a very interesting place for a wander, Pickering has some cracking pubs and The Black Swan Hotel has its own micro-brewery. And dont forget to wander up into Goathland village for the full "Heartbeat" experience - and I'd never watched the program!
  18. Some diesel units - mechanical, electric and modern. A pair of Laira's bubble cars at Looe. 22nd August 1989 B431 has run through the buffers in the Down Trowbridge siding at Westbury. 15th October 1987. L204 departs Twyford with a Henley service. April 1990 L405 on a down train at Ruscombe April 1990 L407 leads a 6 car formation away from Twyford. April 1990 P871 makes its reversal at Bere Alston with a Gunnislake service. 22nd August 1989 207012 Salisbury 23rd September 1987 156 crosses Dandry Mire viaduct 25th May 1992 The same 156 runs into Garsdale station.
  19. Personally, I would like anything that carried china clay in speedlink services - PRA' & PAA or STS 4w Clayliner tanks (TTA?). Yes, I know weve just had the Tiger Rail PBA' but what the hell - spoil us!! Definitely agree, any of the boxes or hoppers from the Mendip quarry fleets would be great for those buying Dapol' 59 and would be interested in the Bardon PHA bogie hopper.
  20. Some good old Southern EMU's today - ok the GatEx is debateable, but the Platform 5 used to list them in its Multiple unit books!!
