  1. How odd. I reserved the model last June (2017) and haven't had the email.
  2. Anyone know when 37055 is due in?
  3. Mine arrived yesterday (V1) and I'm very impressed with the detail etc etc. However, it seems to derail time and time again when going through a chicane with third-radius curves inside a tunnel. Although it doesn't chuck the coach off completely, it is enough to throw the coach off when it passes over a point in the straight-ahead direction half a minute and (several) third radius curves later. This happens when running just behind a locomotive and also when it has eight Hornby LNER teaks behind it. Anyone else having these problems?
  4. Having never bought a rep limited edition (I'm looking to get 37055), is it reccomended to pre-order the locos? If so, which retailer tends to offer the best price? Thanks.
  5. Given the 9F 'Evening Star' is included in the twin pack and said twin pack is here, does anyone know when an email will come through asking for money so they can ship it?
  6. I can assure you the copy I write is not influenced by the advertisers and I know for a fact the vast majority of other journos within mags in my experience are in the same boat. Look at the reaction Elon Musk got when he went on his Twitter rant about the media the other week. Youtubers/Vloggers are a different kettle of fish from journalists as they liase with a marketing department, not a PR team. I agree that a blog should be regarded with more scepticism than a magazine review, however.
  7. May I ask how long ago this was? Things have certainly changed in the last few years; I have a friend who writes for a well-known radio station and she has never been paid to write about particular band/concert etc to my knowledge. Yes, she's been given free tickets to concerts, festivals etc, but that's PR providing a relationship builder and that happens all the time. Again, going back to the car industry, new vehicle launches often take place overseas, in five star hotels and with private jets taking you to and from the UK. This is part and parcel of the job and while it may sound all glamour it isn't really - most of the flights are early morning ones and as soon as you've driven the vehicle an editor will want copy to be filed straight away. It is a generally accepted rule to that in order to review something, the publication won't pay for it - be it a concert ticket, a new vehicle or what have you. This is not a manufacturer paying to advertise a product. A manufacturer paying to advertise a product, is well, that. I'm sure there are exceptions to the rule, but I felt the need to defend my trade against an assumption that every review in every magazine is paid for. They're not.
  8. As a journalist, can I just point out magazines are not "paid to advertise manufacturers' products" for the most part. In 99% of cases, no money changes hands in exchange for reviews, and on the odd occasion where there is paid-for-content inside a magazine it has to be clearly signposted, otherwise the publication will get in trouble with the ASA. For instance, it costs car manufacturers £1,000 a week to send a test vehicle to motoring journalists to review. Yes, magazines - B2B ones especially - are funded by adverts, but a PR department does not pay a journalist to review a model, whereas the marketing department will pay the sales team to slot in adverts into the magazine. The only exception to this rule that I can think of is the likes of a club magazine (such as Hornby's 'The Collector' or a Tesco magazine), which is there - like it or not - to promote products/(a) brand/s, but even then the journalist is given an element of editorial freedom, because nobody will read pages and pages of product plugs. In IC82's case, Rails saw it could get good PR by sending him a (pre-production) model so sent him the model to review - and note, Will mentioned the model had to be sent back after the review had been filmed, so it wasn't as if he was going to keep it forever, either. No money would have changed hands - and if it did, Will would have to clearly mention the video is an advertorial. Rails' also wouldn't have had any editorial say over what IC82 said in the same way a PR wouldn't proof-read a motoring journalist's review of a car before the copy appears in print or a news story. Of course, it is in Will's best interests to be kind about the product because he'll want to keep on receiving models to review and build relationships, but that's no different to any other reviewer.

  10. Good job the Pullman version isn't on offer then, otherwise I would have bought another locomotive I don't need.
  11. After sitting on the fence, I decided to place an order for one, knowing I'd only regret not doing so if I missed out. Can't wait for it to turn up.
  12. Let the speculation commence... https://twitter.com/locationsphotos/status/988837661581414400
  13. £165 for the West Coast Pullman set isn't too bad given Hornby Black Fives have RPPs of that... http://www.hattons.co.uk/35807/Hornby_R2979_West_Coast_Railways_Pullman_with_4_6_0_Black_5_44932_and_3_pullman_cars_Bassenth/StockDetail.aspx Five in stock. I've been watching this one for the last few days hoping nobody would take them before I was paid.
  14. Have to say I'm not too impressed with Bachmann's customer service so far. I emailed them last Friday after a phone call and was told I'd have a reply within 24 hours. Nothing back by Tuesday afternoon so phoned again and was told "Oh, we didn't think we needed to reply to your email". Eh? Anyway, the lady who I spoke to suggested taking off the body and oiling the gears/motor, which is easier said than done as once the body is off, the motor and gears aren't visible and there doesn't seem to be a service sheet anywhere showing you how to take the damm thing apart. Removing the body doesn't give access to gears/worm drive. I do not think I should continue to dismantle anymore because I have no idea what I'm doing. I guess I'm a bit unlucky here - buying a new loco from someone on this forum and out of warranty and seemingly having a disinterested Bachmann not wanting to help out. Bearing in mind it is brand new, it shouldn't have problems like this, even more so given the RRP of the model. For the record, the chap who I bought it off has been very helpful and has offered to reimburse me for any costs involved in getting it to run right.
  15. Hi all, Thanks again for your messages and suggestions. As I mentioned, I bought the loco off a forum member who assured me the locomotive had not been run, so sadly I can't return it to LTM and the warranty has expired from Bachmann. It's a tad annoying in that respect that I'll have to shell out at least £30 in repairs to Bachmann given it is a new model. I phoned Bachmann this morning and the chap there seemed to be a little confused by my explanation. I suggested I would send a video of the locomotive, which I have done. It's below - I thought I'd put up another clip; this time of the locomotive by itself, going both backwards and forwards.
  16. Yep, same noise backwards and forwards.
  17. Thanks for the reply. It was bought 'as new' from a member on this forum - who, by the way, I'm not blaming at all, as he had only unboxed it to photograph it for me and very kindly hung onto it for a few months until I was able to pay for the item, so no chance of returning it to the seller. As the model is from circa 2016 and sold out, I'm guessing it is now out of warranty with Bachmann. Yes, it has been run - for a few hours (maybe five or six tops), and as I say, it is nice and quiet for the first few minutes and then makes the sound you can hear in the video.
  18. Hi chaps, I recently bought the limited-edition Class 66 Harry Beck and have had it running around on my layout for a little while now. While I’m impressed by the detail and the all-wheel drive, I’m a little worried about the noise it is making – it sounds like it is in agony; see the video below. This being my first Bachmann model, I just thought I’d post a video to see if this is normal or not? It’s running on a DC layout (I don’t have DCC) using the silvery Hornby trainset controller. It seems to make this noise after 10 mins or so of running, presumably after it has warmed up? I have only oiled the axles, as I can’t seem to find a way to take the body off and access the motor/gears, as I can’t find a service sheet online! Any diagnosis/suggestions would be really appreciated. Thanks for your help.
  19. Thanks for the info - that's really useful. I have four of the Hornby clerestories and a Western Night Mail coach, so it's just a case of tracking down other clerestories on Ebay.
  20. I see City of Truro has a price now - £149.00. I've ordered the earlier version - ie, 3440 - as I believe that is a better representative of how it was when it did the infamous 100mph run. Is that thoery correct? Also, what stock would CoT have run with? Clerestory coaches and the odd 'Western Night Mail' coach? Thanks.
  21. If you're that bothered by this thread don't read it.
  22. IamDaniel

    New Hornby 14xx

Did they give any indication on when they may arrive? And will we need to buy them ourselves or email Hornby to ask them to send the new tyres out?
  23. Alas, I'm in the same boat as you. My layout is in my parents' house - the advantage of being freelance is that I get to use my model railway while I work, though.
