Ahah, that would explain the "hot hatch" vans where they look like the rear end is jacked up lol (pic 2 & 4)

Very nice work Mark,
At first glance I thought “where’s this new layout sprung from” ....then I clicked after a double take...crafty use of front wheel sets aligned to rail edge
Nice fleet of wagons and kettle there in progress - thanks for tips re pledge too :good:Waiting to see the new layout blog now ;)

Thanks Pete! Whisky certainly helps - or rather: whiskey, as the harvest this christmas was Irish .
oh good shout - yes I had forgotten that there is the Scottish and Irish spelling of it...Whichever it is, cheers and all the best for the next decade

A fascinating read and fab modelling Mikkel - great to see your techniques explained for forming the difficult curved parts
Am intrigued by the Cheese and Cucumber sandwich too...

Ha! Very good Mike. I'm sure that thought will lift my spirits if it should happen again. Or maybe not!
By lift your spirits you mean.....’raise your glass of whisky’?
Good recovery Mikkel

I do really like your baseboard design and construction. Looks good and strong/rigid. Although I used to model in 7mm in the 90’s, (still packed away in the loft!), when I went into my local shop the other day I was amazed how big the 08’s were.
The idea of having sound decoders hooked up to the track for output seems a very simple and clever idea. With the Hornby TTS decoders just giving them the same address will work and sync the with diesel locos. They do them for the 08 at present, and 31/37’s .... Oh dear it’s giving me ideas....
Izzy
Thanks Izzy - I see you have gone in the other direction now to 2mmFS!

That looks superb Pete.
Like Nick I am quite taken with this. But despite looking at past entries I struggle a bit to understand how the ribs are fastened at the rear. Do they also have tabs of some kind? There does not seem to be anything protruding at the back.
Many thanks Mikkel.Yes spot on - sorry if I didn’t describe it fully. Basically a series of small tabs 3mm in depth are let in at places to match the backscene. The whole lot is assembled on its back as it were and then PVA to edge of lack shelf. The smaller 2mmFS layouts don’t have lacks so the frame and base are made up in 3mm ply. A few additional horizontals are added in to help stiffen it. Hope these work in progress shots help explain it a lot better!

You might want to have a look at the Denton Brook thread. Giles is a bit of an expert, he would never admit to being one, on buildings. I was taught to never reinvented the wheel.

Me again - just checked and I know that layout as I saw at a show last year I think - awesome layout... -

Q: what do you use for the pro what ever arch at the front of the layout as yours always appear rather good and I assume are robust
G+T @ Derby next year
Nick
Thanks NickThe proscenium arches on this one (and most of my layouts now) are formed from 3mm ply. The structure is cantilevered essentially by a series of regular spaced L shaped ribs from the back with tabs to help support the front edge. Once the ribs are held in place along the rear and set with PVA the whole front edge acts as a kind of ring beam and works as a whole as It becomes quite rigid. Hope that makes sense?
Yes to the Derby G+T

I'm not sold on the big stuff for myself but I do need sound.
Agreed Rich - thanks again re matters 2mmFS.
It was that Nic Bastable bloke who started the whole sound thing

Always good to see St Ruth and nice to have a catch up.
Haven’t seen the layout since you modified the lighting but it works really well
For the record, I managed to exit without any 7mm purchases...assuming foam storage for stock doesn’t count...

Fantastic to hear, a great reason to fix that date in the calendar!
Thanks Rich - will be good to meet you after all these years!...22 hours ago, cambo74 said:Great little diorama - did you scratch build the Harbour Walls ??
Thanks - it’s never been called a diorama before though! Thought definition of those was that they are static?Yes the harbour wall is built from plasticard and then small details such as brass ladders, tyres from dinky cars etc. have been added...

Thanks Mark - shame you couldn’t make this one - see you next year though...16 hours ago, Mikkel said:The layout looks very good in those pics Pete. That fence is very effective. Amazing what you have managed to squeeze into a limited depth and yet it doesn't seem too "busy".
Admit it, it has nothing do with the weather. It's because such things are BORING.
Thanks also Mikkel - I think the depth is 145mm (driven by the original two halves fitting in an A4 boxfile)
Oh go on then...yep, boring and dull mundane tasks...but they will get done for next outings!...

PS: I'm intrigued by the spots on the wall in the first photo!
Think that’s a climbing wall Mikkel...for exhibitors to use during the show if deemed required...Good to see Struth out and about Andy - the lighting on your first shot almost has a sepia effect

"The main idea is to try and build it for May 2020 however (a) if it does not get finished it might be presented as a work in progress (b) it has a life beyond the competition in that it could be offered as an alternative to Kyle which will no doubt start to retract from exhibitions in the distant future."
Kyle will still be available next April, I trust ? If not, this would make an excellent replacement.
Thanks Stu,Kyle will definitely still be around as it is booked through with shows until 2021 at the moment...that said, am happy to bring it along to SWAG 2020 in whatever shape it is in...bargain two for the price of one deal...

Best wishes,

Many thanks Kevin - and for since sending me through the prototype photos - some great material there!9 hours ago, ullypug said:The world needs more china clay layouts. Funnily enough this is a prototype I’ve been looking at in 4mm!

Thanks also Andrew - agreed on the China clay layouts - at least you have a tiger available in 4mm...
42 minutes ago, Mikkel said:Pete, I was going to say that you are the King of mock ups, but somehow that doesn't sound as positive as I mean it!
Anyway I do think your mock ups are works of art in themselves.
I really like the track plan too, perhaps a clue in there for modelling a mainline station in a limited space, too. I suppose it will be operated from the front, so it would have to be hands-off operation of the FY at one end, in order to avoid you walking back and forth?
I look forward to seeing this come to life. Not least this bit:
Thanks Mikkel, very kind of you to say so.
Actually was planning to operate from behind as per all my layouts - just the way I prefer to do things. The layout including both Fiddle yards should actually sit on the support stands that have made for Kyle and operation will have buried magnets for uncoupling.
Glad you like the sketch extract - it started off as trees...but ended up looking more liked barbed wire...
