Started tossing together this… Thing last night…

Boredom and a surplus of parts do wonders to the mind… Body is from a Thomas & Friends toy of the character “Stepney”, chassis is a trimmed-down Hornby 0-4-0 with an Airfix Prairie tank’s bogie…

    Debating… 0-4-2 or 2-4-0? Looks awful either way! 🤪

2-4-0 would at least be somewhat prototypical…

I'd scoop out the original boiler and smokebox, replace it with a slightly smaller one sat a bit higher. I think it'd make it look a bit less toy-like.

There's some neat kitbash potential in the Oxford Rail N7 body. For reasons known only to the designer, much of the boiler concealed by the side tanks is modelled. If ever a Belpaire boiler body comes my way it will be tools out and carve away time to obtain a really small GER-ish 0-6-0.

Someone after my own heart. Eastern Region represent!

    Ditto for: *

    Autojumbles

    Toy fairs

    Antique fairs

    Car boots

    Record fairs

    Military events

    Vintage clothing fairs

And of course eBay, although they usually just grumble in the description or terms of sale section.

The trouble is, thanks to the media, everybody thinks they're an expert and everybody thinks that you can make a killing.

If you could, we'd be currently touring Italy on matching his and hers Brough Superior SS100 motorcycles or in a 1957 Maserati 3500GT...

*The Memsahib and I get about a bit.

I don't know. My luck at toy fairs has been pretty good, though admittedly less for model rail stuff...

I'm back with another selection of eBay goodies I've discovered. Pictures as always are linked, and as always let me know if you end up with any of these as I love to hear the ongoing adventures of the stuff I find to show on here.
This is an interesting beast, sold by judith1951-2009. Got to love a freelance goods engine. I am very tempted to buy this myself, it is a lovely looking 2-8-0.

    image.png.d7c2aa77ebeceb1c05a3d1c922448397.png

Also from Judith is this lovely Crystal Palace tank which I am very, VERY tempted by. I mean it's me with Great Eastern stuff, of course I am.

    image.png.861da70e7aac8d2dfa01322b7b9d7402.png

And another by Judith. This 0-4-0T is adorable, though that tiny wheelbase worries me somewhat.

And time for a HETCi rather than a LETCI. These motorised ERTL Peter Sam and Rusty in RWS livery by aisgillbox are absolutely gorgeous. Just a shame the Sir Handel and Duncan in the background already seem to be gone so I can't also put them up.

Here is a work-in-progress shot of a real hybrid, of which more information probably to follow later. I consider the identity of model locomotives to derive from the chassis, and thus consider it an ongoing rebuild of a Tyco 4-6-0. That said, it presently incorporates: the chassis thereof, body shell from a Wrenn R1 scrapped when her drivers were found to be irreparably damaged, cylinder saddle, crosshead guides and forward main rod sections from scrap Rivarossi “Casey Jones”, handbuilt brass frame extensions and crosshead guide yoke, and incidental scratchbuilt styrene components.BD170177-FA6D-4841-AB06-7FE525CCAA70.jpeg.a3abd8bad69d5ad72cd91a1f94bd52e6.jpeg

It's far from the clearest mock-up drawing (I'm not au fait with the 'creative' side of things on my MacBook; should've dug out my Windows for all this cut/paste!), but a prototype Nelson Baltic? I've got a Hornby Nelson which I don't particularly want, have tried selling several times and it hasn't gathered much interest, so rather than it sitting in its box forever, I decided to make a little plan and propose an imaginary locomotive at the same time.

    image.png.1efc2ee3c0884935ad6483c7ab380fc2.png

It's not terribly neat I'm afraid and I wasn't too sure about the placement of the rear bogie due to the depth of the ashpan, but I think it makes sense as a vague illustration. The cab is from a W tank (It had a slightly larger bunker than the K; typical max. coal cap. of British tanks seems to be around 3.5T, especially compared to other large tanks, Baltics in particular) and obviously the rear bogie just a copy of the leading. For the tanks, I tried to follow Maunsell's general plan on passenger tanks of having them run to just shy of the smokebox, and maybe 3/4 the height of the boiler (this may also be wrong. At the moment, it's just an idea). I'm glad the W had a Belpaire firebox, as it made marrying the lines (reasonably) easy, even if I am a bit clumsy on the laptop trackpad.

Now, according to the SREmG page for the class, ''he [Maunsell] was set a tough challenge for this specification by the Chief Operating Manager because the future standard for main line express trains was to haul a load of 500 tons tare at a start-to-stop average speed of 55 m.p.h. on not only the South West section but also over the demanding to operate Eastern section. Maunsell set about this in a systematic fashion with development work and trials using modified locomotives, and evaluating and comparing the designs of other companies with the aim of producing what would be called today a "state of the art" locomotive. However first there was a pressing need for more express passenger locomotives for the expanded summer timetable of 1925 and this was met by construction of additional class N15 engines with an improved front end.''

My imagining is that when the locomotive was being designed, consideration was being made of the various larger express locomotives already in service on express routes which could be relieved for other duties and replaced by standardised Nelsons, either Baltic or tender form. The Baltics in particular may have been used on the premier ex-Brighton and Continental expresses on the ex-SEC, replacing the (equally fictitious) inherited, non-standard Tilbury Baltics purchased in 1912. The Baltic Nelsons probably would never have been produced, I'm thinking mostly because of fuel capacity and also the lack of need for another Baltic class on the Southern - even if it was a 'standard' design. Besides, the Brighton Ls weren't too old, only really ousted by impending electrification and poor route availability. I imagine it would be much the same for the (fictional) SECR/Tilbury Baltics., With all that water weight on top of the drivers, they'd also probably never have got off the drawing board because of the overall weight. Likely fine outside of Kent, but in the county, it'd probably be a risky move.

Even so, it all fits neatly into my little 'fictional history' box for Blackstone as well as the wider remit (I hope) for an imaginary locomotive. Oh, and one final note: the name. Obviously the class were named for Royal Navy admirals. Now, who better than Lord Amelius Beauclerk, Duke of St Albans and distant cousin to the Blackstone Beauclerks?

I approve wholeheartedly and look forward to seeing it Alex!

From a distance, they looked like LEGO pieces to me.

I can’t exactly criticise though, I’m no stranger to using LEGO on OO models…

Flashbacks to the time I glued a LEGO cannon to a Railroad 4 wheel coach chassis…

I know it doesn’t exactly relate to the thread topic, but I’ll gladly dig that out this weekend if anyone is interested for whatever reason…

Hey, it's kitbashing in my eyes. Though it is your own initial creation so you're correct that it's not exactly relevant to Wild Kitbash.

Aside from the rather garish face, a rather nice repaint… I’d personally remove the water cannons though.

That appears to be a first-year Hornby Thomas face.
Still, more effort put into this one than most of the Thomas attempts we've seen on here. Also those water cannons seem very familiar. Might have to take a look at my Transformers collection.

That scratch built 4-6-0t is not so freelance, I think it looks very much like a Cork, Bandon & South Coast B4 tank engine built by Beyer Peacock. 1or 2 lasted till the end of CIE steam. With a strip and repaint it could be a much nicer model.

Attached a BP drawing and a rather poor photo of my kitbuilt Bandon tank. Hope they are of interest.

Very smart engine. I'm always a fan of unusual wheel arrangements, and 4-6-0T is certainly one you don't see much.

Found hiding in a box along with the GWR 101's, Nellie's, and Smoky Joe's, and other assorted 0-4-0's at a Toy Fair on Saturday, this representation of a B4.

Has an "old style" Triang/Hornby chassis with X04 motor.

Google brings up no clues as to it's origins.

Does the panel have any ideas ?

Also been genuinely tempted to do a Where Are They Now for all the models that have been featured on this thread and are now in the possession of people on here. Could be quite fun.

My newest post brings me to this from my previous major post. This is to everyone who's on here who bought or owns a model featured on this thread. To celebrate 4 years of Wild Kitbash, let's do a Where Are They Now. Which model did you end up with, what happened to it and where is it now or what does it look like. With photos please! Just thought it could be fun.

A brother to my No.10, perhaps? This is a large scratchbuilt 00 4-6-0T by judith1951-2009. (Using smaller images to save upload space on the post, then I can get more in!) It's a pretty thing. Judith has a couple other scratchbuilt 00 locos as well, but this one caught my eye the most as a freelance design. The others look to be an E4 and an I1. Images linked as always.

rocketrailways, which has appeared on here quite a few times if I recall, provides us with this very nice grounded coach that reminds me a bit of the carriage cottage at Holt Station on the NNR (depicted below.)

Another returning item maker, this time the incredibly talented clairegilmore75 and her gorgeous scratchbuilt buildings. Considering she has been here multiple times before, she needs no introduction.

Well, I guess some things never change. It's a Hornby D Class with Thomas' face. Yawn.

This is a bit more effort though. A Bachmann Crab painted up as James. Numbers and lettering are a bit iffy (being literally paper glued to the bodywork) but the paint itself is actually pretty solid.

There’s a YouTuber called “Small Thomas World”, he’s a Japanese content creator who’s done some pretty radical things involving Thomas merch… Tomy/Trackmaster shells, McDonalds toys, even custom Lego bodies, fitted on Tenshodo HO motor bogies, can’t help but feel like that may have been an inspiration…

I'm familiar with his stuff. The guy's a mad genius.

Not sure if it counts as “cheapo train sets”, but here’s an idea I’ve had for a while:

I’ve been seeing a lot of those YouTube videos with people making fancy things out of those 3D pens, one good example I found whilst checking YouTube was a car body made using a 3D pen, designed to fit an existing RC chassis, and this got me thinking… Could this be applied to railway modelling? I know decent places to get cheap chassis’, I have a book of OO drawings by F.J. Roche, all I’d need is the pen. Would it be to the same scratch as a professionally made model? Absolutely not, but as a bit of fun I think it could be a decent challenge!

If I were to attempt it, I’d likely try something like a Jinty, not many complex shapes since most of the boiler is covered by the large tanks, hell, maybe even whip together some scale drawings of a Nellie body and attempt a replica of that, either way, I’ve been thinking of this for a while and want to hear other peoples thoughts on the matter.

I honestly can't see any reason why it wouldn't be feasible, even if not exactly an ideal method.
