  1. Here is Peter, undercoated. I decided I couldn't bring myself to potentially destroy the locomotive I've spent so long trying to get. So instead Peter is now this. Backstory in-world is still the same: 1896 build date, KLR's oldest and smallest locomotive, originally built for the WNR before being sold to the KLR in 1919. Only difference is it's now a Robert Stephenson and Hawthorns industrial product rather than an Avonside.
  2. Ok, it's not constructed the way I thought it was. I thought the smokebox and tank were a separate piece like on the kit. That's irritating as I didn't want to damage those parts.
  3. The Pug has arrived. I have it sat next to Bulldog in the photo because I still can't get over just how small it is. Now, I want to make sure I do this right. And I have no instruction sheet, plus I can't find anything online. Could someone please walk me through disassembling it? After all the effort needed to find this thing I do not want to screw this up.
  4. I myself started with a Nellie, despite being a good generation or two younger than most of the people on RMWeb. It was my absolute favourite when I was a child back in the late 90s, and I still own it. It's had a repaint, a repair, a new whistle and a new name and number, but even now it is still the same engine I loved as a child and I still love it dearly. (Depicted here with a Dapol Pug as it's the only photo I have to had at the moment.)
  5. For me, I agree entirely. This, along with the price and the fact I love to design my own stock and locos, is the reason I exclusively do RTRbashing for that stuff. Hmm. Comprehensive and interesting. My thought process is... a little less thorough. Have a general idea of what I want to do. Find donor locos / body shells / etc. for as cheap as humanly possible. Work out what I'm doing. Bash the parts into roughly what my idea was. Profit! Also I'd love a Hornby Peckett. But I'll likely never be able to afford one in good working condition.
  6. Well I found this Dapol Pug kit for just OVER £10 total. The issue would be motorising it and adding couplings, hence why I didn't just use one of these in my own epic quest. Hmm. Yeah, I see what you mean actually there.
  7. While I wait for my latest purchases to arrive, I shall begin work on a locomotive that I've had as an idea (inspired by this adorable creation by relaxinghobby) for a while not. Introducing the work-in-progress form of KLR No.7, Gremlin. As for what job this little 0-4-0 (the KLR's third 0-4-0 tank) will do, I'm... not sure. Alnerwick Quarry's on-site locomotive? Alnerwick station's resident shunter? A banker for the Hewe Incline? I'll cross that when I come to it.
  8. Yes, I am put off by the money as well for the kit. I don't have that kind of cash! Hmm. Forgot about Adams' time with the GER. Very nice. You're doing a good job there, sem.
  9. Fair. The issue would more be, and sem is really going to frown at me for this, I'd want to James Holden-ify it. That and I don't own nor know how to use a soldering iron, at the very most not yet.
  10. The KLR Loco Works are back open for business!

  11. And I now have the K3. Boom. After several weeks of nothing on the loco workbench we get two for the price of one. So, update: 3. Peter - Hudswell Clarke industrial 0-4-0 saddle tank - Hornby 101 / Hornby Caley Pug / Dapol L&Y Pug bash 16. Edward Bradleigh I - LNER pattern 2-6-0 new build - Bachmann LNER K3 / Triang B12 bash
  12. Thanks. Hearing that Corbs and Edwardian like my stuff is one thing (no offence guys, you guys are awesome and without your work I wouldn't be doing this now, plus Edwardian you're a great mentor) but hearing it from a man who kept my interest alive while I wasn't even thinking of doing it myself is something else entirely. Consider my day made Especially as I didn't even know you were on here until now.
  13. Hmm. I'd been thinking of "Easternising" a T3 for my own railway at some point to be honest. Any companies make an RTR version of it?
  14. Either way, seeing steam locomotives in such a state is truly distressing.
  15. Must say it's really weird and nostalgic seeing you pop up on here Gerald. I used to read your old BNR stuff years ago on the New Railway Modellers forums before I even thought about seriously doing model railway stuff myself, and used to sit there thinking how much I'd want to do stuff like this. It's good to see you on here
  16. I agree wholeheartedly. Admittedly a bit elderly for my own work, but still.
  17. Thanks. Then again, Percy is supposedly inspired by the GWR's 1340 Trojan which is a similar Avonside tank, so that's hardly surprising If you need a Percy, you're more than free to use the concept. There's a simpler and slightly cleaner version on the newest post of my concept library. Credit goes to Captainalbino more than me though, his similar idea which he used to build a model of the aforementioned Trojan was instrumental in both concepts. I merely simplified his idea.
  18. As should I. In amongst the rows of slightly overpriced Hornby Castles and Bachmann 4MT 2-6-4Ts you can find some real steals!
  19. And expectedly, it is indeed a very smart looking loco.
  20. I normally lightly sand with fine sandpaper until the paint comes off.
  21. Good. I've also got bids on a Bachmann K3 on eBay which will be turned into No.16 Edward Bradleigh I (from my first KLR story) so keep an eye out tomorrow to see if I win that.
  22. Well, to celebrate me finally being able to complete Peter, the little Dapol Pug-based saddle tank that has been the thorn in my side for well over a months, I decided I'd do a few variations on the humble but extortionately expensive little 0-4-0: Starting off with what I'll be doing for Peter - this nice little Avonside: Credit for this one actually goes to Captainalbino; I merely simplified an already existing concept that he came up with in his 1340 Trojan build. Then this, which actually looks far better as a potential build than I expected: And one for my good friend sem34090: I actually quite like this. Might send it to him as a genuine suggestion for his own work. And finally this, my masterpiece... ish. It's an attempt at creating a modern Triang Nellie using parts from the Pug and the various Hornby starter locos available on the market. The result is a bit messy (or at least my Photoshop mockup is) but shows promise: As always, feel free to try these for yourself as long as credit for the idea is given - excluding the Avonside, as mentioned main credit for that should go to Captainalbino - and as always hope you enjoy them but don't blame me if they're ugly
  23. It's just a concept anyway, but still I can see why that would cause problems. Still not the oddest saddle-tank I've ever seen. That'd be this gigantic beast.
  24. THE KLR WORKSHOPS ARE BACK OPEN! THE CURSE OF PETER IS BROKEN! Thanks to a tip-off I got (indescribable thanks to OliverSR for telling me about it and Rails of Sheffield for having such reasonable prices) I now have a Dapol L&Y Pug to complete our troublesome, cantankerous No.3. WATCH THIS SPACE.
