Hey guys, since it's the new year, it's a new update Been working on these ones again! I have used rectangle shape brass, to create these NEM pockets, which spare couplings I had slot into... Make sure you get the height of these right BEFORE dolloping loads of epoxy glue! It called for a new "plate" to be fabricated! Finally, some progress on this one... Took this one outside and sprayed!! (in January too!) :nono: Not a reccomended thing to do! And, I see red! Jules

Hope everybody had an excellent Christmas and hope for an outstanding New Year! Very sorry for the lack of updates, my attention has swiched to the layout and exams coming up=Arrgggh!! First up, thanks goes to Will for showing us how to get into a 56's gearbox! It made a grinding noise, just oiling required in the gears!! However, I think I'll need to clean the wheels as well!! A couple of photos of it: Also decided to crack on with wagon projects. So, over to my two ZBA Rudds! All engineers wagons seem to get quite bashed about, so here's my take on it: The first thing is to scratch the sides up, I used the point on a screwdriver, if you have an awl, congratulations, you've done a better job than me!! Then I try to paint into the scratches then end up washing most of it off. Actually dulls down the wagon nicely!! Eventually, I can get the brush into the scrach, however, the lines are a bit wide!! Also on the ends: Sorry for the very long update, just haven't done anything in a while!! Thanks for reading this far And, thanks again Will, wherever you are!! Jules

Torness Yard - current day engineers yard in OO
Departmental203 replied to Departmental203's topic in Layout topics
Hey guys and oh, by the way MERRY CHRISTMAS!! I am sorry for not putting up many updates recently because: busy (and lazy!! ) I have put a bit of effort into the layout, it's just when I make a step forwards, I go 6 backwards!! For the track, I had to take up, relay, take up, relay and repeat until I was a happy guy!! And I think I have also messed up 2 of my soldering iron tips!!! Frustrations aside, I have taken some photos=progress!! Much better alingment over baseboard joints now Also, kink sorted out!! And, I think the fiddle yard will look more like a freight yard than the layout itself!! Finally, why not! If you are curious, my mum made this!! Absolute craftsman!! Thanks for reading this far Jules -

I am actually not a DEMU member so it'll be hard getting UPDate! I got 2 copies from the group Scottish modellers at the Falkirk show, which is where I heard about your push-pull project Happy holidays! Jules -

Excellent work Jonathan, I think you have nailed the DBSO, especially the front end, and that is tricky to get right. I have read your excellent article on the MK3a coaches on a DEMU update. Glasgow-Edinburgh services have changed forever with electification...watch this space! Good luck with other projets Jules -

Torness Yard - current day engineers yard in OO
Departmental203 replied to Departmental203's topic in Layout topics
Just a quick picture-less update about the layout (still been relatively busy!) Been laying some more track for fiddle yard and fixing some sagging baseboards. The cause is not moisture, but me being an idiot!! :nono: Three guesses why that is... Jules -

Just bumped into this forum (have been discovering some new ones recently...) I like your multiple units and an ambitious project of Southampton Central (watch this space!!) Keep at it! Jules -
Sorry about that Jack What I meant by a baffle plate is on the Hornby Class 60, there is a plastic moulding behind the grill being a representation of the components inside the loco. And I was used to calling it a baffle plate! There is a component behind the grille in this photo, I meant to ask, will you build a representation of it? Keep at it! Jules

Upgrading Hornby OAA & Cambrian Air Braked Kits
Departmental203 replied to aasmall's topic in Modifying & Detailing RTR stock
Thanks for that Mike, I may just use the VDA ones as a compromise, at the end of the day, they'll be better than the original ones!! I have the same problem with a Hornby HAA bought secondhand, the brake levers are missing! (Sorry, from OAA to HAA!!) Jules -
Upgrading Hornby OAA & Cambrian Air Braked Kits
Departmental203 replied to aasmall's topic in Modifying & Detailing RTR stock
Thanks, I had a look at the Stenson's Models website and thought the OAA and VDA handbrake levers look similar in therms of shape and lengh. Can anybody provide me with more info, or say if it's a terrible idea, that will be grateful. Jules -
Upgrading Hornby OAA & Cambrian Air Braked Kits
Departmental203 replied to aasmall's topic in Modifying & Detailing RTR stock
I am also planning to upgrade a Hornby OAA as well, got it last week. I'll probably use the SPA solebar and the spare leaf springs found in the Cambrian kits and MJT W irons. Can anybody suggest a good way to make up the hanbrake levers, as the Colin Craig etch is now no longer available. I will thank anybody in advance who can help. Jules -

Hello Richard, I have just stumbled across this form. Started watching your Youtube videos a few years back and I am watching them again to help with my layout. The videos are great, and has informed me about things to buy, inspiration for projects etc. Good luck with the new layout Back to Youtube again... Jules -

Maybe try either Rumney Models or Wizard Models, they both manufacture springs and axleboxes in 4mm in whitemetal Jules -
Torness Yard - current day engineers yard in OO
Departmental203 replied to Departmental203's topic in Layout topics
Thanks for that Mark, I enjoyed the show, talking to Scottish Modellers, SDEG, and more! For the layout, I have picked up all these gubbins, mainly for electrics and even dual-colour LEDs! I am so sorry the photo's terrible, but the mix includes Gaugemaster point motors, wire, a multimeter, flux and more! And, a few photos from the day (sorry about quality issues!!) Hope you enjoyed the small selection of photos Jules -
After a great time at the Falkirk show, I picked up these two ancient, but useable models. Both Hornby models, and picked up at the sum of £13 (thanks to Ross Cameron at the show) Ross has an extensive range of second-hand models for cheap, so if you meet him, see if you can find a decent second-hand model! The Hornby OAA. The model's body is crisply moulded indeed, hovever, the chassis looks horrible and the wheels ride too high. A comparison with a Cambrian OCA: Comparing the model's wheels to Alan Gibson wheels, the diameters are the same as well as having a representation of a disc brake pad! (The Hornby wheels have thicker flanges, but it's no problem for me!) Finally, the Hornby TTA. I do believe some of of the parts will scrub up well, despite it's age. And, any good sources fo OAA brake levers? Jules
