  1. Hi N15, Is this 4mm scale? Looks very very nice. I see you modelled what I assume to be the original Adams design with square spectacle windows. Keep up the very good work! The 0395 class was my first scratch built loco (10 years ago) and I guess it shows a bit! 30567 is a little rough in places compared to your rather lovely model. She does though run quite well and forms part of my attempt to build an example of every 0-6-0 tender loco inherited by BR SR in 1948. Think I only need the ex LBSC C3 and SER 01 (kit purchased from Branchlines still to build) for the set. Kind regards, Richard B
  2. Hi Dave, Many thanks for the comment. I use transfers for all the lining - I have used Fox, which are fine, but prefer Modelmaster - particularly their latest mixed traffic artwork. It is a bit finer and is robust enough for you to move around and align corners etc. Once on I then apply Decalfix very carefully. Kind regards, Richard B
  3. Well 30491 is now finished and ready to join its four class members when that time comes. Just have to finish 30333 and re-install and complete my 70D layout. I don't think 491 looks too bad: Original: Black and white: And in colour: Well that's it for now, will return shortly with an update on 30333. Kind regards, Richard B
  4. Hi Dave, Following this closely - my ACE version of this loco requires finishing - after LNER K2 commission and completion of H15 30333. I guess this is a bit late but the Roche drawing of this loco is quite helpful regarding the rocker actuation of the inside piston valves. N15X.pdf Kind regards, Richard B
  5. A quick update - tender build is now complete just need to paint bufferbeam and pipes them weather and add coal, oh and add the lining and decal too. Greasy fingermarks on tender side tut, tut! Kind regards, Richard B
  6. Wonderful stuff Roja. So well thought through. I work with Stroke Patients as a volunteer at my local hospital so perhaps my (limited) model railway skills can be put to good use thanks to your inspiration. Learning to adapt and being determined to succeed by small steps, as you clearly have, seems to be a successful strategy post stroke. It doesn't work in all circumstances since each case is different. Good luck for the future, Roja! Kind regards, Richard B
  7. Hi Chris, I think Jon's suggestion is a good one, Dave at SEF is always helpful in my experience. You may wish to look at adapting a SER steam reverser casting which should be available from SER - you will need to cut it up but it just might do the job. Kind regards, Richard B
  8. Will be in touch Jack. Kind regards, Richard B
  9. Hi Jack, Back off hols so please let me know when its convenient to progress the Hornby Black Five railing project. Pleased to say that I have located my version without too much problem. Is Sunday morning still your preferred tea break sessions? Kind regards, Richard B
  10. Some really great work Jamie and I notice that I am not the only one with an untidy work bench, at least I know where everything is! Kind regards, Richard B
  11. Hi Clive, Sounds like fun - I assume your horse was a winner? They were I fairly influential band at that time expressing the frustration with the madness of every side in the "Troubles". Were you there on official business? I visited in the 1990s and early 2000's. Did some work with NIR and CIE (as was). York Road, Belfast and Inchicore Works, Dublin were interesting to visit both suffering from a lack of investment. I recall York Road overhauling EE 4SRKT engines and still suffering from all the problems that we had with them back in the 1960/70 at Eastleigh. Thankfully NIR has had an injection of investment. The people of Belfast (an Dublin for that matter) could not have been more hospitable. Kind regards, Richard B
  12. Can I add this little number? Somehow I think the sentiments described has some relevance to our present circumstances? I couldn't find a live version of Suspect Device, anyone? Richard B
  13. What a joy this all is, such fond memories of one's youth..... Thanks Clive, all this and model railway stuff. ...nostalgia with a hard edge I love it and the music naturally! Kind regards, Richard B
  14. Hi Ian, Thought you had discovered a new supplier, Golden rather than Green Arrow? However a good way of realising the original Jamiesen kit. I see that you use the really useful Poppy's Chassis Jig - simple but good. Good luck with the project and looking forward to the following your progress. Kind regards, Richard B
  15. Back from a cruise around the Baltic in a very large ship. All cities visited rather wonderful. No chance for railways though, Mrs B would only agree to trip from Wernemunde to Rostock  (two pairs of shoes purchased by Mrs B) and back. Very lovely places to visit though.

  16. Hi, Now that 65335 is finished I can get back to H15 unfinished business. I am building 30491's tender from a spare Finecast Urie 5,000 galleon tender. This loco though was fitted with one of his 5,200 galleon tenders so I have modified the tender by soldering a brass strip to the base of the side and rear castings. The brass first being tinned with high melting point solder then the strips soldered to the castings with low melting point solder. Some alterations to be made to the tender - no brake adjustment holes in bogies sideplates required and tender crew side sheet needs to be aligned with cab. Oh for a good photographer! One of my son-in-laws is a very good photographer but he lives in the USA! Coming along anyway! Kind regards, Richard B
  17. I don't suppose that this is in any way a unique thought amongst my fellow modellers of a certain age but those of us that grew up with a steam railway are getting less and less in numbers. It was the realisation that many modellers on this website look on the diesel era with as much fondness as I do the steam era that has brought it home to me.

Whilst there is nothing to be said, time moves on, it is good that this site gives us old buffers the chance to pass on our knowledge and experiences.

I never cease to be amazed at the quality and variety of my colleagues endeavours not least of which is the photography, wish I had more skills in this direction.

  18. Hi Dave, Thanks very much for the comments. I have four other H15s, 30475 (DJH SR H15), 30489 (Parallel boiler, built by PDK), 30333 (Built by PDK and me) and 30335 (PDK kit and scratch built tender). Now building the tender for 30491. The best of luck with your big boilered Urie original and be careful with the tender choice some had the smaller Urie tender (S15/N15 size) but most had the larger variety. Let me know if you need any pictures of the prototypes I usually do lots of research before building. My H15 gang follow. Good luck and kind regards, Richard B
  19. I am sure there are many more modellers with more experience of flywheel fitted loco's but essentially a flywheel stores some of the motors energy. When you cut of power the flywheel releases this energy so the loco continues to move for a short distance - a nice gentle slow to a stop rather than a sudden stop. More like the prototype I guess. Is that useful in a shunting style operation? I seem to remember shunting loco's came to a sudden stop so that the wagons being pushed continued on their way to the planned destination - inertia again! Kind regards, Richard B
  20. Hi, Lots of good advice has been offered, Alan Gibson P3 chassis would be fine. You could also look at Branchlines, they can supply gearboxes and Mashima motors and are very helpful. http://branchlines.blogspot.com/2006/06/catalogue-pdf-files.html Good luck and kind regards, Richard B
  21. Would love to attend and meet some of you guys - Know BOT and Swad well. Lived in Marston Montgomery in the 1980/90s which is in the area - we are though away on a Baltic Cruise. Hope all goes well DEMU and well done Clive and all your colleagues for organising. Kind regards, Richard B

    Ivatt 2-6-2 Axles

Hi John, Have a look at: https://jamestrainparts.com/2019/01/28/Bachmann-mainline-replica-railways-split-chassis-axel-repairs/ and perhaps: https://www.lner.info/forums/viewtopic.php?t=4369 This subject was also discusses on this site a few years ago: https://www.lner.info/forums/viewtopic.php?t=4369 Hope that helps a little. Kind regards, Richard B
  23. Hi Clive, Thanks for updating me on the New Music scene, we all miss Mr Peel I think? Please keep up the good music work. Can't help you on your timetable plans, were you a Train Planner in another life? Us engineering types just provided (sometimes) the kit for you operating types to play with. My interest is building little steam loco's. Kind regards, Richard B
  24. Some of us Southerners have lived up North too you know! Indeed we even have family up there. I know my daughters keep me posted on the grim realities of life up North! Must get back to Derbyshire (North Midlands I know but near enough) some time soon, probably Buxton so we can easily get to Stockport or Nottingham. Kind regards, Richard B PS Did some work on the first 141s - as originally designed the large bowden cable operating the brake actuators had a habit of being cut as they passed through a frame crossmember due to suspension movement. Re-designed suspension before service operation cured that problem.
  25. Had a nice uneventful operating session this afternoon, must do some more modelling not just running. Tonight has been a bit of an old goth song visit only to find it is the last biscuit in the box. Didn't realise that anyone else knew of the Fields of the Nephilim - hard core Goth stuff compared to The Mission or even The Sisters of Mercy. I remember painting my eldest daughters bedroom black with stars and moons etc.. whilst listening to The Fields a - memorable experience. We resisted the coffin bed though! She is now a wonderful Senior Ward Sister with three lovely kids. Thanks for reminding me Clive. I really like the combination of railways and interesting rock music. How about Joy Division/New Order? Many thanks and kind regards, Richard B
