  1. In the end I roughly worked out dimensions from number of planks and the rest by 'if it looks right' So my H0 version is now done, Evergreen car siding and microstrip (lots and lots of microstrip). It might not be as detailed and 100% accurate, but it looks the part. It'll get planted on Dounreay (my FNoS micro terminus) in due course.
  2. Loddon's Hocus Pocus Old Ale. Free delivery within 10 miles of the brewery on orders £20 or over. A 5l cask of the excellent Hocus Pocus was £22
  3. Very sad news, did plenty of his tours back in the day. RIP 'Fat Man'
  4. Colour me interested, as I've just done some H0 masters for resin cast 16t bodies with and without top flaps. Hope to get the moulds done later this week and some test casts done.
  5. Just checked my 1974 RCTS coaching stock book, which shows W1803/M1805/E1808-10/M1811/2 as still being 48-seat. Bogie-wise, 1801/2/4/5/8-12 all shown as BR1, 1803/6/7 on B4s All were 48-seat by the 1978 issue. I'm about to start SC1829 (44 seat, BR1s) in H0 from a pair of Lima BSKs (which will also yield me another BG)

    Dapol 08

Goes across between the bottom of the front steps, I think.
  7. Some proper progress at last. Over the weekend I prepped the Lack shelf, glued the 2mm eva foam trackbed down, then the track fixed in place (Gorilla wood glue... it ain't coming up again!) with the 2 wire-in-tube point rods carefully aligned and affixed *before* the track went down. Track all tested and okay, so now looking at the main structures - platform, overall roof, road overbridge, Highland Railway wooden goods shed and platform-mounted signal cabin. Oh... And the disused loading Dock. I've cut the basic parts for the roof (Slaters embossed sheets of coarse stone and corrugated iron and some Evergreen 'car siding' planking) will need a couple more sheets of the stone, on order and should arrive within the next week. I've also been working on some stock, adapting some long Oop kits for resin casting, 2 types of 16 tonner, an SR 12t van, a Lima BR 12t van modified with GW ends. Once a new batch of plasticine arrives next week, I'll create the 2-part moulds for these and do some test casts.
  8. Could anyone with the Peco kit take some basic measurements for me please, I'm looking to do one in H0 scale for my HR micro layout as its perfect for what I need. Width, height, depth, height to windows and window height if possible, please, I can then convert from 4mm to 3.5mm and have a go at scratchbuilding one. TIA
  9. An alternative to shelling out for the etched walkways might be to see if the moulded ones can be thinned - I know I had a go at one before buying some etches. I think I glued the walkway in place and let the glue properly set, then razor-sawed the walkway bit off flush with the underside, leaving the supports on the tank. I then sanded and sanded and sanded and sanded until the moulded walkway was, if not wafer-thin, then probably not far off. The thinned walkway was then glued to the supports.
  10. Good stuff Northmoor. The old Hornby TTA is fundamentally accurate, just the walkways and ladder are a tad 'chunky' by today's standards. I still run a number of them, including the sole surviving item of stock from my very first trainset in 1977. They have had the tank halves glued anf filled, EM wheels and screw couplings, plus replacement etched walkways and ladders. There are various etched replacements available from the likes of A1, S-Kits, Shawplan and Stenson Models, covering the variety of types. Cast whitemetal ends allow the coned or chopped-coned ends to be done.
  11. Aaaannndd... done! The boxfile micro is just about there. Maybe some minor scenic additions (oil drums, pallets, litter and other detritus) and some signage. I'm leaving the hopper off the left hand building as I don't think it adds anything. I'll plug the hole in that roof once I get back to the office and print off a section of walkway to extend the existing one over the hole. Some of the structures could easily be used independently on a larger layout, once you download the file you can print off as many bits as you want. A fun, fairly quick and fairly cheap project. Roughly 20 hours all told. Cost about £25 (£10 each for the kit and the assorted card, £5 to cover the yard of track, glue and the dozen S-M 10A blades blunted during the build). The boxfile itself came from the clear out when the department moved out of 55 Broadway some 18 months ago. It's well designed and straightforward to build. I'd certainly do another (just not straightaway!) And it all breaks down and stores neatly in the boxfile, so nice and easy to take to shows or have a quick play when I fancy some shunting. I do need to sort out some dedicated stock (these are all borrowed from my Reading Signal Works micro) , a handful of vans, an open or two, maybe something longer like a tube or plate to occasionally complicate the shunt... https://scalescenes.com/product/ly01-industrial-boxfile-layout/ is the link to the kit, if anyone fancies a go.
  12. Adding more structures - I did all the fixed low level structures first (so didn't follow the instructions sequence entirely) before adding the detachable upper level ones.
  13. While I am working from home (supporting operational colleagues on the Tube with revised schedules), I've been using the time I've saved commuting to the spare room each day instead of London, by making the Scalescenes boxfile layout. A couple of under construction pics to start with, showing the side and front openings cut away, base layer cut around where the track goes and then track in and hardstanding laid. The first structure done and temporarily in place to check clearances. And a 'capacity check' to see just how many wagons I can put on there ;p (9 x 10' wb vans/opens. In practise I'll operate it as a 3-2-2 inglenook, with 5 wagons in play at any time) Track is Peco Code 75 with a cut-down short radius r/h point - this was salvaged off an old layout but the tiebar had snapped. At least this way it doesn't just get binned. A simple plug-in fiddlestick with wired fishplates just gets attached to whichever of the 3 tracks needs shunting.
  14. While I was on a roll with the Winkle, I also used some Ratio square post GWR lower-quads to load up my Prawn, to represent scrap signals coming back to the works for component recovery.
  15. It's taken a wee while, but with a bit of time on my hands, I've had a go at replicating the superb pic that mewstone shared last August. I've used a Winkle, rather than a Whiting, on the assumption that Winkles and Whitings were essentially the same thing. The green primer is more vivid under the lights than in the Flesh, trust me!
  16. Just finished watching Attila the Stockbroker's weekly livestream. Great mix of poems and songs, old and new, ending with the classic 'Tyler Smiles'
  17. Bristol (Thornbury) show 1-3 May has been cancelled also. https://www.bristolmodrailex.uk/
  18. Maidenhead Club's summer show in Knowl Hill on Sat 6th June 2020 joins the ranks of the cancelled shows. http://www.mmdmrc.org.uk/2020-exhibition-news.html
  19. The German Railway Society Globalrail show 30/05/2020 at Didcot has been cancelled. https://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/152220-cancelled-german-railway-society-globalrail-2020-didcot-30052020/
  20. It will come as no surprise to you that, in light of the government's latest advice to avoid public gatherings and non-essential travel, the GRS have reluctantly decided to cancel this year's Globalrail show in Didcot on Saturday 30 May 2020. The hall has already been booked for 2021 and I would hope to include as much of this year's content forward to 2021.
  21. The Carlton Model Railway Society's show in the Howden Shire Hall this weekend (Sat/Sun 21/22 March) is cancelled, info in 2 comments on their Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/carltonrailwaysociety/
  22. Great to see Brighton East again at the EMGS/S4Soc skills day in Didcot yesterday. One question, if I may. The postiche you used for the excellent brambles, do you have a source/link, please? I've tried googling and searching amazon / ebay, but all I get are full wigs/hairpieces. I'm guessing I'm not being specific enough. Tia.
  23. Between the LMS/LNER and BR, I think there were between 3 and 5 of them. They remained in traffic use into the 1970s, 3 later were modified for departmental use and 1 survives on the ELR. The Triang model is short by 2 'bays', but 2 can be cut n shut together to make a correct length one. I've done 1 Trestrol EC with scratchbuilt plasticard/plastic section trestles and a suitable load. And I have 2 more to make a 2nd at some point. The bogies are also slightly short, being 5'+5' instead of the prototype's 5'6"+5'6", I have seen 1 so corrected, but I didn't on mine. I also fitted EM wheels and 3-links to mine. There are a couple of threads on them elsewhere on RMWeb, try a search for 'Trestol'
  24. A very pleasant, chilled and convivial gathering. Tried my hand at a few new (to me) techniques, caught up with old friends and viewed some very nice layouts. Seemed pretty busy too. Well done to all involved.
  25. Oh? Is that Mike volunteering to organise expoCostaDelSol?? Just make sure your expansion joints are sufficient.
