  1. That always baffled me, I’ve seen a few of those models that take measurements from the 5-to-7 decade old Triang locos, pretty sure the Britannia they made did such, even though I’m certain there were newer-tooled Britannias on the market by that point.
  2. Triang Rocket by any chance? Certainly looks it, but with any luck it’ll be one of those cheap magazine locos which happened to take measurements from the Triang model.
  3. On a bit of a Hudson kick as you can tell, and I’ve thrown this together, next step is to bring it into CAD… May well lower the boiler and cab when I take it to CAD, just so it doesn’t go over my loading gauge…
  4. Just remembered (don’t ask how I forgot) I have a PLA 3D printer I’ve been meaning to get the bed reset on, once I sort that out I’ll have plenty more opportunities for modelling, so I may or may not have began designing something, currently just a basic drawing of the Princess chassis, unsure of what I’ll attempt to design to fit it, will post again once I’ve thought of something… Made the wheels slightly oversized, that way I have the extra wiggle-room for clearances.
  5. And it’s a Rosebud by the looks of things! Would’ve been worth far more if he just left it alone! Edit: I’m personally a bit mixed on Halden, on one hand he finds a decent use for those static loco models that were in every magazine store in the 2010s, you all know the ones I’m on about, on the other hand, as you said, he butchers perfectly useable locos. Won’t lie, I’m honestly tempted to buy one of the Triang locos he’s done up, slap a motor into it and see if I can make it run, just for a giggle.
  6. Never said anything about toolings, the thread began with someone mentioning the prospect of scanning existing models, and with 3D printing becoming more common in the world of model railways, allowing an endless amount of obscure prototypes to be produced by individual modellers, my mind stepped over to that instead of making injection-moulding tools like the ones used on the original Kitmaster models. Sure, 3D printing may not be 100% reliable, not to mention some printers leave behind nasty print lines which can take lengthy sessions of priming, sanding, filling, etc to make a print look nice, surely something like that would be more cost effective than splashing out on injection moulding machines to make tools of obscure models that only a certain group of people really know a lot about. I never claimed to know anything about the costs of producing models either, not to mention the countless hours, days, months that go into designing brand new tools, I was simply sharing my opinion on the matter, a good idea, but likely not going to happen in this day and age simply due to how rare these kits have become, and how obscure they are in the grand scheme of the hobby.
  7. Could a motor with enough power and an appropriately sized shaft be used too? Pop the wheels off their axles and stick them on the end of the motor shaft, then crank it up as high as it’ll go.
  8. Stumbled across this thread whilst looking for a K’master Hudson for sale, and I thought I’d give my own thoughts on the matter: For all of you saying that Dapol owns Kitmaster, I personally doubt that, K’master died in 1962, many of the railway toolings went on to Airfix, and when they went bust in the 80s, the remaining Kitmaster toolings went on to Dapol, they simply use the Kitmaster name, as that’s the brand they were part of when initially tooled, I doubt legal issues involving 6-decade old models that have seemingly been lost to time (in terms of original tooling) would be the issue. I do believe that the main issue with this would be finding all those unbuilt kits, butchering a few poorly made ones at a stretch, something like the Hudson, Stirling, Garratt, Croc, etc would likely be hard to find unbuilt, and simply drawing up new components likely would be the way forward given how rare they are. And yes, time would likely be an issue, but I’m sure there’s one or two dedicated collectors out there who would put in the time to see this range make a return. Don’t get me wrong, I’d love to see a revival of this range, especially considering the quality of recent Dapol releases, where the toolings are seemingly reaching a point of being totally cream-crackered, if all the necessary models can be found in unbuilt and good condition I absolutely see this being an option, but with how hard it is to find said kits in this day and age it probably won’t happen for a while.
  9. Was browsing the internet for Kitmaster Hudsons, and this old thread popped up, thought I’d bring the topic here as I’d bought up a similar topic not long ago. With recent technologies such as 3D scanning, printing, CAD software, etc, if there’s anyone out there with unbuilt, sought after K’master kits and access to the aforementioned technologies, then I believe a revival may well be in order… I’ve seen some of the more common kits like the Prairie, BoB, School, etc, sell in the region of £20-£30 unbuilt, and they presumably wouldn’t have the same warping the Dapol kits currently have (due to the Dapol kits using a lower quality plastic), so taking measurements from those would likely be far easier, imagine something like the Stirling or J94 kits making a comeback…
  10. Possible candidate for motorising using a Princess chassis? I know I’m tempted to try it out, so nobody buy it! 🤪 Would love to do a Rosebud Hudson on the Princess chassis, but I just can’t seem to find one for a good price, £75 for a well built one so I’d hate to see how much an unstarted one costs…
  11. Need to figure out what to use for the bogies and tender in terms of finer wheels, but for the loco? Tender drive Black 5 wheels seem to be the way forward. Once I’ve sorted out the remaining wheels, off to the club she goes! May even repaint her since the decals are worn and she has a nasty sticky-spot from the price tag… Debating either a nicer green, or another in BR blue. Also debating nicer details, separate wire handrails, etched nameplates, etc.
  12. Been rather indecisive over what to do with that second Princess I acquired last weekend, and I’m considering not converting it. ….At least not converting it to another loco, I’ve been somewhat burnt out by the Prairie tanks and it’s left me with some spare tender drive 5MT wheels, which just happen to be the same size as the early Princess wheels, so I’m considering rewheeling it to run on my club’s code 100 layout…
  13. Not the livery you listed but it sure does look like a fun one to model... Can't find anything in terms of technical drawings, but they had 6'2 drivers, so by using a rather unorthodox method of measuring... I've managed to work out the loco was roughly 43.1ft long (including buffers), the tender roughly 30.8ft long (again, including buffers), measures around 13ft 5in tall, hope this helps if you've been considering modelling it.
  14. These the sort of prices you’re on about? :) Chassis will go to… Something, not sure what yet, body’s an acetate and warped, but the tender’s a Rovex (coupler gives it away) so I may pair that up with my Rovex Princess…
  15. This one? The WP Pacific? Looks an awful lot like the streamlined variant of the NSWGR C38s... I've mentioned before that I've been tempted to do a conversion for the C38, so I reckon a WP would follow a relatively similar process to that...
  16. @33C Recently watched Train of Thought's new video on the Australian 4-8-4 "Heavy Harry", you reckon that'd be a decent loco to attempt? An interesting design which I'm certainly tempted to try... Might try and grind the flanges off some spare wheels I have, not as ideal as using factory-made unflanged drivers, but if filed the right way you could have increased traction by having more driven wheels that are actually in contact with the rail...
  17. Personally I’d do it for preservation reasons, given those are, what I assume at least, the last remaining toolings for Rosebud kits. Ah well, if the original casts are completely cream-crackered, replicas are always an option…
  18. So here’s a thought that just came up: I’ve heard of collectors associations for niche ranges of models buying out the toolings of the models they collect to produce replica components, the Trix Twin collectors association owns most, if not all of the original TTR toolings, and a Wrenn collectors association exists too, owning a selection of Wrenn/Dublo toolings acquired from Dapol (though I haven’t found much info on this). Out of interest: Does a Kitmaster collectors association exist? If so, has anyone considered the thought of possibly purchasing the K’master toolings from Dapol should the range become discontinued? Outlandish maybe, but not impossible…
  19. I do believe the madness has gone too far… So back to eBay! https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/386305337298 Over £200 for boxes!? (And two unbuilt Airfix 4MTs)
  20. Hey, whatever blows your whistle
  21. The Kitmaster Pug motor kit didn’t actually come with a motor, that was for the builder to supply themselves, but I believe Perfecta (the company that manufactured the motor kits) recommended using a Romford TT Terrier motor.
  22. Might I recommend Little Wicket’s pug conversion? Involves a 3D printed replacement motor mount which takes a coreless motor, mounted diagonally, though you could likely toss something together out of plasticard.
  23. “In fact, Edgar and Toby said that they preferred working with female engines, because they had ‘nicer couplings’” 1:55 for that exact quote
  24. I don’t drink, nor does the friend who initially bought it, but that purchase led us both down a rabbit-hole of actively looking for weird, wonderful, and downright horrifying RTR repaints. I wouldn’t be surprised if the guy who made the original repaint was drunk when he did it though!
