  1. Sorry to drag up an old topic, but I am continuing to have electrical issues on the same 2 locos. Another fried decoder, the 3rd on the loco in question, and the other faulty one has had similar symptoms and makes decoders get instantly hot. I noticed prior to it failing, the amps on the controller where going very very high then low, and generally fluctuating and getting very high. So I am thinking more that this is likely to be a fault with the actual motor on these 2 locos, as they seem to fail regardless of putting different decoders in place. I bought them from the Hornby 47 rfd tts release a couple of years ago, I'm wondering if there could have been a fault with that batch? So do I need to look at getting the actual motor bogies replaced??? Any thoughts welcomed.
  2. Would a Lima bodyshell fit easily onto a Hornby TTS class 37 chassis (the same way it is fairly simple with a Lima 47?) .many thanks.
  3. Flicking through old magazines it seems Limpets where based at Northampton for the WCML and Edinburgh for ECML , but unfortunately the western location for Limpets isn't mentioned. From what I've read on here in the replies, my money is maybe Barton Hill or Westbury.....
  4. I can't seem to find a class 47 version of the excellent Hunt coupling, am I missing it or if it doesn't exist has anyone else managed to use a different version that works with a Hornby TTS class 47?? Many thanks if anyone can help.
  5. Wow did not realise the hooks could be removed like that on those, thanks alot for the advice, I had previously tried pulling the coupling out and it didn't budge so I had assumed that it was all fixed, but squeezing the fish tales slightly did the trick ! Many thanks.
  6. Hopefully this photo shows the kind of couplings in talking about that I have on my "fleet"
  7. I hadn't realised that Hornby were now doing mk2s with NEM pockets. If hattons is correct then my intercity mk2s are unfortunately not the clip connection you list above and also not NEM pockets, but are a coupling that is attached to the bogie by a flexible bit of plastic , its really hard to explain! So in that case I'm guessing the version I've got was short lived by Hornby and that Hunt do not do an adaption for this type of coupling?
  8. Right think I managed to get onto the site, it seems they do the earlier Hornby mk2 bogies, but not the latest intercity mk2s? Can anyone confirm this?
  9. I clicked on the link and the website doesn't appear to be working properly, its all blank???!!
  10. What really??? Cares literally only about the military, and has no interest in anyone who isn't in, or ex forces. Also refuses to live in the fair port city, but lives over the border in Cornwall. An awful MP in my humble opinion.
  11. Just trying to get some info on what depots wagons (specifically the intercity ZKA "limpet" wagons) would have been based at in the early 90s period, prior to privatisation . I asked the question on a previous thread and cathays was mentioned, but from research I've done it seems it was closed by the 90s? Also possibly Barton Hill? Other options maybe Westbury, Margam, Old Oak Common??? I am specifically interested in the WR BTW. It was mentioned that maybe wagons didn't have "home" depots, however reading an article in an old Rail magazine, it suggested that wagons did each have a depot allocation , so just thought I'd do a bit more digging incase anyone can help, or even suggest??? Thanks.
  12. I have purchased some hunt magnetic couplings and so far am very impressed. However I want to fit some to my Hornby intercity mk2 rake (the latest model) but as they don't have the pockets couplings I'm at a loss on how to fit the Hunt couplings. The photo I saw when buying them on ebay shows an IC mk2 set, so short of gluing them onto the Hornby bogies is there any other way of fitting them? Thanks if anyone can help.....
  13. I am a little disappointed with the new Hornby class 87 in that due to the position and design of the couplings it is impossible to propel coaching stock without almost instant derailment. Has anyone else found a solution to this problem? Also, presumably if Hornby are to release a HST set with couplings mounted on the body and not the bogie then the new HSTs will have this problem too when they are released.
  14. Yeah the pickups are all clean and touching the wheels, and its all wheel pickup. I don't think its a fault per se, the problem is I do like to run at what I see a scale 125mph and I think the design just doesn't quite work so well at the higher speed. The powered cars are not a problem presumably due to drastically extra weight, but I'm gonna try the stay alive option to see how well it does or doesn't work and also if I am able to do it!
  15. Right from Reading these links I'm thinking that I have to solder the stay alive decoder directly onto the TTS decoder and NOT onto the circuit board I photographed. If anyone could just confirm that? Thanks. And thanks for the quick and detailed responses BTW!
  16. Apologies if this is really obvious, but I'm looking to fit a stay alive decoder into a Hornby dummy HST TTS power car (I've found it frequently momentarily loses sound at higher speed) . I tried extra ballasting but that didn't help and I've gone through it with a fine tooth comb, there is nothing wrong with the loco , just my track perhaps not being quite flat enough and the odd bump at speed and the power loss occurs. Anyway, my question is how on earth do I fit one of these stay alive decoders? It has 2 wires one blue and one purple. I have added a picture of the locos circuit board, would i need to solder the wires onto that? Electronics etc really isn't my strong point so sorry if this is me being really dumb!
  17. I took your advice and although I didn't notice any obvious faults, I did tidy up the wiring a little which seemed very bunched and random underneath the socket PCB and I have found this seems to have done the trick. Loco in question running far better now, so many thanks for the advice. Other issues still outstanding on some of the other locos if anyone else can chip in?
  18. I've just fitted a dcc blanking plate to one of the affected locos and it ran like a dream! Yet the weird thing is, on the loco in question it has had 3 different decoders (all Hornby 47 tts) in it and every time I get the same fault with the loco coming to a standstill for 2 seconds then moving then stopping for 2 seconds then moving. Yet on DC only just now it ran fine!? Does this confirm the issue isn't with dirty wheels / pickups / track etc.....???
  19. Thanks for your reply. Its a factory fitted decoder , and no matter what decoder goes into the plug socket, it gets very hot almost instantly. At this stage the decoder isn't insulated at all as I'm running it to test it with the bodyshell off. The problem with the very hot decoder is only affecting the one loco out of the fleet (although several chips have been fried on different locos) . I was wondering of it is likely a problem with the motor?
  20. Yep I've also had numerous fried decoders , but fair play to Hornby they have always replaced them. Glad its not just me then...
  21. I am lucky enough to own several Hornby class 47 TTS locos, however the current failure rate is truly shocking! BR would be proud. If anyone has any advice on any of the following issues id be very grateful.... - Loco seems to stop very suddenly, irrelevant on how good or clean the track is and despite all pickups and wheels etc being clean (there are 2 locos with this fault). They run for a couple of seconds, stop, then run for a couple of seconds and stop again. Running tends to improve after a minute or so. Just to reiterate as far as I can see this isn't an issue of dirty wheels, pickups or track, seems something more. It isn't like the classic loco losing power on bad track, it always performs exactly the same with the same momentary 2 second pause before starting off again. With dirty wheels or track things tend to be a little more random. - Decoder gets very hot on one engine in particular . It even fried one decoder. I put a new one in and within 1 minute of running it is already too hot too touch. - Haulage issue on one engine. It is fine when running chassis only, but when I add the loco bodyshell it can't pull the skin off a rice pudding! And just general poor performance with the majority of the locos. In complete stark contrast to my excellent Hornby HST TTs engines. Anyone got any hints tips or advice ? Thanks.
  22. Just need to find a decent AC electric Gen site now to get hold of the 86 that worked this.
