  1. I havnt got mine yet to compare, but is it actually a retooling, or just a reintroduction of the later liveries on the latest tooling... Just that my Burma Star model with high intensity light from the last batch looks remarkably similar.

  2. I don't think this sits well, especially when smaller / family run model shops which have shut may be relying on any orders they can muster online or via phone to live. Carnforth for example are posting any orders once a week. If Hattons want to close then that's cool, but they can't expect others to follow suit.

I think that the vast majority of potential purchasers would not have the time or inclination to examine two very good models in such minute detail - I certainly wouldn't. Also, you seem to assume that etched detail is automatically superior to moulded detail; I far prefer the latter, not least because etched detail can be and is mis-applied.

On price alone, it'd be the Bachmann version for me.

This is so very true. I didn't even know that half of those things quoted existed lol and wouldn't want them falling off when I pick it up, so moulded (to the detail they are on the Bachmann release) is fine for me.

  4. Just too add my experience of the Western. Its a different issue than yours, but alongside your report, it has still made me think about the reliability of the models again.

I bought one new from a shop last week (full price from one of the big shops). Ran it in on Sunday, and within a couple of hours it juddered to a halt and would not restart. The lights all still worked, but no motor movement.

It was running on dcc at the time, so I installed a replacement to check that it wasn't the chip. Still nothing.

It could just be something as simple as a loose wire, who knows, but it was a brand new model, so Its gone back to the shop now, and I am awaiting what I hope will just be a simple refund. Half of me wanted a replacement, as the model looked very nice, but I don't want the hassle of worrying for the next x years if it's going to breakdown again when it's not just as easy as sending it back to the shop.

  5. If you're after a new 64xx, then my local shop, Arcadia Models in Shaw, has both GWR Green and BR Black for £72 & £85 respectively. The ones on ebay seemed a lot more than that when I looked. I got my GWR from him a few weeks back.

  6. Does anyone know if the LH version has been released yet please? Everywhere seems to be out of stock, so I guess I've either missed out or its awaiting release.

***Edit*** it's in stock on Dapol website so guess its just been popular!

  7. I had a break from laying track today and finished my cabin off.

What a cracking kit it was to make. The laser cut precision made it much easier than a normal injection kit to construct. Pain to paint the lining, but overall enjoyable and worth the effort. I'm not going to town weathering it, as I think it will loose its charm. I've lightly done the bricks and roof.

I fitted mine with the ratio internal kit, which needed trimming massivly, but will hopefully come to life when I light it up.

  8. If only based on how much I sold my TPE 68 for on ebay this morning, I would say that the demand for another run is there. I would have kept it, but it was an impulse buy based on the line next to our house (and has since sat in a box in the cupboard) and I can now get 2 new steamers for it :-D
