Remember how on page 2 I said I thought my trackplan was as good as it could be after so many years of planning? Well last night sat looking at the fiddle yard trying to work out where I could stow 3 inter city MK3 sleepers (if I buy them) I had a bit of an epiphany.
Anyway, little bit of trackwork carried out tonight, no additional track or points needed.
I've included a pic I've done on Anyrail. Anything not labeled (grey) is sidings which converge back to the mainlines on the otherside (out of the picture).
So this change means The 3 car DMU (Exeter to Barnstaple) goes under Cowley Bridge and off the scenic section then can pull into the red siding (Barnstaple) and wait to return, or park up off the head shunt. It also means the track cleaning wagons (x2) I had in the other siding are now just off the main line with only one set of points to reverse over before they can begin the track cleaning. This is much better than reversing them over multiple points. It also means that I can have another loco siting in that siding waiting to take a turn on any incoming passenger trains; or freight. I have another siding on the other side for the same reason.
Oh, and the sleepers; there's loads of room in the top fiddle yard if they don't go in this siding. There's no need for the DMU to park up so the sleepers can stay there ready to be brought out for the sleeper service.
A minor but very useful change Bob.- 1

Do Stealers Wheel fans spend eternity stuck in the middle?
Yes I think so. Plus Beatles fans are always walking along the long and winding road where they’ll quite often pass Talking Heads fans on the road to nowhere…- 4

That’s a great texture Duncan. It’s got a proper splodgey (if that’s a word) cement appearance which you wouldn’t get from spraying it.
Another great train for the layout.

.... which makes me wonder whether the 1987 date is right ? ( The four coaches behind "Renown" in my 1986 picture were Mk2s.)
One thing that made me think it was later than say the early 1980s was the orange cant rail stripe. I’m not sure when they received them though?- 2

We've already got one, unless 4003 has been quietly dismantled to produce a 850 saddle tank or a Buffalo pannier or...........maybe even a Kruger🤨
This is getting madder by the day. We’ve gone full scale Lego Swindon products now.- 3

A friend of mine - who’s relationship wasn’t going too well, came home a few years ago to find the house empty but his metal bin smouldering away in the back garden. When he got the lid off and looked inside all he could see was a load of paperwork, ash and embers glowing inside. This turned out to be all of his locomotive spotting and haulage records from the 1980s and early 1990s…

It's dated 1987. Given this only has 2 coaches it suggests a DMU replacement.
Yep fair comment. When I first looked at it I thought the rest of the train was out of view due to it crossing from the down line.- 1

The 62 headcode suggests the loco may have been nicked off a Waterloo-Exeter working, which were booked Class 50s by then.
Yes and it’s got me wondering what headcode was generally shown on local services now. Maybe it was just the twin white rectangles normally?I used to try and do the 17:25 Exeter to Paignton every evening after school as it was a solid 33 turn and it was a good way of ticking them off.

That’s a ridiculous amount of money for the condition of the property.
I’m only slightly tempted…

Is there a ballpark figure on what 7027 is costing the 4709 Group available anywhere?

Same scene that gets used alot, but then it is the scenic section!
Nothing wrong with that. I’ve named myself after it. 😉- 1

Such a shame that whatever was done with this forum seems to have lost all the previous pictures; before May this year anyway.
Slow progress on the layout. I've been doing the platform sidewalls. P6, 5 and half of 4 done now. I say done, they have the brick on which was already partially weathered. I want to add trunking and other detail to them too but for now I need to just make some progress. Got a week off now so between the layout and the house I should get some work done.
I need to build some more trunking so I can ballast the remaining area to the north of Red Cow crossing. I'd like to get that done this week. After watching a DVD I bought of traction around Exeter St Davids 87-89, I've re jigged some of the more formal livery sets to replicate what was actually running. Here's one shot from a HST on its way to St Davids just past Cowley Bridge.
Some really familiar scenes coming together now Bob. Exeter PSB and the little hut by Cowley Bridge Junction are unmistakable.- 1

As a follow-on from that: What are we trying to achieve here? Are we trying to showcase our hobby? Because if that's the intention then I have a story to tell. I posted a picture to my work chat channel recently. Just as a talking point. The picture got a good response and there's even a (somewhat remote) possibility of one of my colleagues extending their repetoire from D&D modelling to railway modelling. They thought it was good. I've had similar positive feedback from golfing buddies.
The picture? Well obviously I can't show it here because it clearly violates the rules. It shows a class 43 running alongside my Queen Elizabeth (and to be honest I don't think the scenery is up to scratch).
Are we trying to show 'the rest of the world' what we are doing or we just trying to show each other how clever we are?
I’ve always taken it to be a case of trying to capture something that looks as realistic as possible. So for me I’ll take a photo, look at it and see what stands out as giving it away as a model and then maybe have another go until I’m happy enough to share it on here.I’ve posted photos of my layout on here with no railway bits in shot before but only if I think it captures something interesting. But also if people want to show off how clever they are then that’s fine by me because they are clever and there’s nothing wrong with showing it off really. Otherwise we might never see it.
I find a lot of the photos on here inspiring and they’ve given me ideas that I hadn’t thought of before. If you haven’t got the time to read every layout blog on rmweb then it’s a good way to get an overview of some of the really good stuff…

It’s a shame there’s no date on it. 33s did work Exeter to Paignton services up to 1988 which fits in with the signal box being in operation.- 1

Loco hauled DMU replacement trains can be very modelable:

Oh. It’s cold shower for me time…I had 20058 and 20087 out to Skegness in 1991 and I’ve got a version of the train behind 50008 on my layout. Wonderful stuff thanks for posting it!

I mean that’s not good information for me by the time I’ve sat down and read it. I’m not relocating no matter what the rules say…
