It looks amazing now that the detail is more three dimensional, the loco seems to have a lot more ‘presence’ somehow.
Will it be possible to straighten out the grille over the fan, or is it just a bit too delicate to pull it out slightly?
To be fair I probably wouldn’t have noticed it if you hadn’t mentioned it…

Fair play @Blackthorn, that can’t have been easy typing that out.
So many people are struggling at the moment and this last couple of years have pushed many over the edge into it being a significant problem.
If you ever want to talk to someone who’s not directly involved then please do contact one of us. I’d be more than happy to help having worked with various people that were dealing with these kinds of issues in my previous job.
There are ways out of this.

Plastic has been delivered.
@Stubby47 - I’ve been looking into giving this a go myself but in N gauge. Obviously we’ve lost a lot of photos in various threads though.Would you be able to repost a couple of the more recent ones for me please?
I’m intrigued as to how you’ve gone about it.Nick

Those grilles make a huge difference to how it looks. Really looking forward to seeing it finished now!

A couple more from me that I took the other day.

That’s really helpful thanks Duncan.
I’ve had difficulties using some of the detail pack stuff before with locos, in the end I’ve tended to use some part from various packs and then made up my own pipes from fine wire.
It’s probably not perfect but it works at first glance!- 1

The fine detail is amazing. I do have a couple of questions actually…
1) Where do you source all of the bufferbeam equipment (ETH boxes etc)?
Is it stuff that you’ve made yourself or can you actually buy it from somewhere?
2) How did you go about plating over the old steam heat filling port and other small details that needed filling?
Any advice much appreciated.

I can’t remember what the last few things I posted in this thread were, but looking through the photos on my phone I found a few that I don’t think I’ve used before.
I’ve gone a bit early toothpaste livery crazy recently…
And a couple from my friends railway (but with my stock). 37035 rescuing a failed class 50 somewhere on the edge of Dartmoor.

My stepbrother sent me this lovely commemorative mug that he designed the other day. I’m not sure if this particular range is likely to catch on though…

I also have two of the 6-pin ones and, like yours, they are great runners. They were poor with the factory-fitted decoders, but once I replaced those with Zimos, they were great.
Back to the subject of the Next18 versions, when mine stopped working I seem to recall it made a very brief shorting sound before it stopped. Do you recall whether yours did the same?
I was just looking through my emails to see if I’d said that to them but I think I might have spoken to them on the phone. One of my Farish 47s made a shorting sound and packed up a few weeks ago (my current repair bills are getting up near BR in the 1980s at the moment!) but from what I remember I was listening to something on my headphones at the time so it might have shorted out but I wouldn’t have heard it.
I have found the email explaining what they had to do:
I have stripped your loco down and replaced the faulty motor and worn primary gears in both bogies. I then gave the loco a full service.
Worn primary gears… As I said, this loco had not had a great deal of use. Probably a couple of evenings a week doing a few circuits of the layout.

I have experienced the same with 33114, also a Next18 version from the same batch.
I remember someone (yourself?) posting about this a few months ago and I asked whether you got it sorted, but I don't think there were any further replies to that thread.
I guess mine will be heading to DCC Supplies on my next visit to the UK, so I can expect a similarly hefty bill if indeed it is the same issue. Disappointing.
Not just us then.Yes I think I did mention actually. I thought it would be interesting to see if this had been a problem with a few people but maybe we were just unlucky?
I’ve got one of the earlier 6 pin ones (33102) and dare I say it, it’s probably one of my most reliable locos and if I was going to get another one I’d be tempted with an earlier model.

Evening everyone.
A few months ago my model of 33008 packed up and apart from the lights nothing would work on either DC or DCC. Unfortunately it was also out of warranty by then.
I didn’t really want to take it to bits to see if I could work out was wrong with it because I think I’d have probably made things worse. So I sent it to DCC Supplies and they diagnosed it as the motor needed replacing, that cost me £57 plus posting it to them.Last night having a running session on my friends railway his model of 33042 packed up with exactly the same symptoms, won’t work on DC or DCC (and yes of course, it has also just run out of warranty).
Neither of us are competent enough to start stripping the loco down to see what’s wrong so it will also have to be sent away to DCC Supplies for them to have a look at.Neither loco has been run an excessive amount and both have been cared for so I’m at a bit of loss.
Has anyone else had a similar experience with these particular models?

I think you are correct, the leading car certainly still has seats. The photo is dated 23/10/86 and railcar says the two cars in the picture weren't converted until November, so perhaps they are pre-conversion in Bill Atkinson's shot?
That’s a good call Hexagon.- 1

It is one of those isn’t it? Although it sort of looks like it’s still got seats in it.
The caption on Flickr says that it’s on a Red Star working.

One loco two faces- a new project for Shirebrook
Last year @Colin very kindly sold me a class 45 loco centre headcode version with a spare split centre headcode body. After much research I think the last split centre headcode 45 running on the network was 45036, in fact I think it was withdrawn without modification.
The picture below was sent to me but apologies to the owner I have no details of who to credit.
The loco looks it is very close to withdrawal, I will be modelling my example in slightly less grubby condition!
The centre headcode body will become an unnamed class 45/1 so it can head up my MK2 MK1 'Master Cutler set. Any suggestions for a suitable number anybody?
The centre split headcode model started off in green livery
I used precision model stripper to remove the factory finish. I did the same with the centre headcode body. This body was in BR all over blue livery but as I will be adding some of my own etches to both of the bodies it will be best to have a clean base.
A tip for you if you are intending to respray a loco, don't forget to repaint the bogies. Why you ask they are black, well yes the bogies as supplied by the factory are black but unpainted black plastic. The bogies look so much better when sprayed black, and when weathered the difference is even more noticeable.
So here we go, a couple of bodies a chassis and some etches.
I will update over the next few weeks as work progresses.
Cheers
Duncan
Really looking forward to seeing how you go about this Duncan. Will you be replicating the way 45036 seems to be looking to the side?
Actually there’s a photo online where the dots look even more wonky but it might look a bit strange in model form! -

I keep trying to get a modern picture here for the 'abandoned rails' thread. The pit has been turned into a seating area but there's always people in the way...
Yes it’s pretty busy down there these days! One thing I’ve never been able to find is a photo of the old Alphington Road goods depot (near to where Iceland and Aldi are now). Never seen a picture of it anywhere…
