  1. If anyone does need some cast plates for this diagram, I have sets from four of those kits going spare.
  2. Me too, but there's always the option of large letter GW and probably the pre 1937 style.
  3. Impressed, genuinely impressed. You do still find them at swap meets or exhibitions and very cheaply, especially in parts of the country distant from GWR territory. It also helps that what are essentially pre grouping wagons aren't all that fashionable at the moment! Unlike eBay where that little haul would be on a BIN for about £40 and of course, L@@K!! R@RE!!! I'm itching to get building some of my vintage Cooper Craft stash, but I must be strong and get on with building somewhere to run them.
  4. That all got a bit over analytical in a hurry! 😄 We just like old B movies with flying saucers and monsters from outer space... Having lived with a couple of girls at one point in my misspent, I can assure you that it gets old really fast! The reality of a dying planet populated entirely by women is likely to be caused by the media giving them utterly unrealistic expectations of the ideal man, in short what is known as Princess Syndrome that runs contrary to yet alongside a notion of (and as a key element of) female empowerment, or by politicising sexual concerns to the extent that nobody dares speak to a member of the opposite sex anymore, both of which seem to be on the cards for "This Island Earth" ...🤔
  5. Steering head bearings can be time consuming, but at least modern bikes have caged inners rather than forty or so separate steel balls. The worst job is often getting the outer races out of the frame. On older bikes there's often a pair of grooves inside the headstock tube to get a drift into, if not, there's a cheat. Cut a small piece of flat bar, 5 or 6mm thick that just rests inside the taper then weld the two ends into the race. It's easy then to drop a large diameter bar down the headstock and tap out the bearing. There's enough heat to expand the headstock a little without doing any damage. Obviously, only do one side at a time!
  6. "There are no good girls gone wrong, just bad girls found out" Mae West.
  7. Always liked the L1, never mind what purists say. A friend of mine did a major plasticard job on one to create a very nice looking LSWR 4-4-0. Another good loco for upgrading that can be had cheap is the Hornby 2721 Pannier, I have several in the queue.
  8. This is the early wooden post type by Smith assembled and painted plus a light weathering.
  9. I did think that being you, you were saying that works "do's" are never like in the movies. 😉 It certainly is. I think that it was Noel Cowerd who said something along the lines of "How come the bad guys always get the nicest uniforms?"
  10. The first locomotive that I ever had, somewhere around 1978 was an early Lord of the Isles. It would be the ideal thing to upgrade, busted smoke generator, cracked retaining lug / cab floor so extra washers on the body screw, trailing wheel springs missing etc, but I loved it. In a fit of nostalgia, I bought another one from eBay, one of the last Triangs, it turned out to be mint and barely used, so I accept it for what it is and it gets the occasional outing on my layout. (It has been dubbed the shiniest loco on RMWeb by my thread readers) I am sorely tempted to buy another battered one and upgrade it to 1915 condition or thereabouts. As for hacking Triang locos about, I always wanted to convert a Jinty into GWR number 23, so acquired a tatty example. No sooner had I done so than I found a much later Hornby one with the boiler mounted motor in a junk shop for £9. The problems with the wheels and motor in cab were instantly solved. Having had lengthy discussions with one of my conspirators on here, we ended up with two examples, both with printed bodies and metal details, nothing was farmed out bar the metal tank fillers etc. Mine is still Hornby chassised and powered, the other uses Bachmann Pannier parts on a printed chassis block. I think that the moral is, don't throw anything away. This is it, awaiting the signwriter and some light weathering. Running trials, minus chassis details. Early on, showing the cut down Jinty chassis, the rear wheels were swapped to the centre. Another loco I wanted to own as a boy was a Mainline 2251, I finally got one a few months ago but it didn't stay standard for long, the first thing I did was swap to a smaller tender as per 2291 and work is still ongoing to put it into 1938 condition. I'd encourage anyone to have a go, especially when you remind yourself the subject for improvement is basically a broken old toy.
  11. Actually, there was somebody who was busted on related charges who was laundering drug money selling cars and other vehicles. It's the paper trail and public advertisement of a tangible item for sale or auction that gives it a legitimacy of course they were "selling for a friend".
  12. Not really, In a world that celebrates rank ugliness in all its deviant forms, it's rather nice to attend a genteel event where you have to dress up and be on your best behaviour. It's a form of escapism. Even if someone does give you a backhanded compliment by saying that you both look like you just stepped off the set of Casino Royale....

They do rather look like the nasty kind of stray hairs....

From the same seller, a "limited edition" wagon. By no means the most expensive out there, it's just that I don't get it. I still remember the obsession with Lima diesels, that wasn't exactly a sound investment. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/194177361764?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mkrid=711-127632-2357-0&ssspo=7NGT9XstTyC&sssrc=2349624&ssuid=3qkTzGg7QRS&var=&widget_ver=artemis&media=COPY
  15. Science fiction that a wolf can relate to. I never really believed that the memsahib was from Cheshire...
  16. Oops! Shuffle them about and treat them as individuals!😆 I don't use an airbrush and deliberately try to add variation, but I suspect that a decent one is on the shopping list. I think that my Ingersoll Rand 14CFM compressor might be overkill, so that's another few hundred. I have an Iwata spray gun which is really good, I suppose their airbrushes are of similar quality?
  17. Interesting stuff and it reminds me that the memsahib scolded me when we first met over the fact that although her saxophones are made of brass, they're actually a woodwind instrument. Apparently that is a bigger sin than confusing Star Wars with Star Trek....
  18. Wow! Does that mean I am an internet influencer? Should I affect pantomime horse fake eyelashes and get into equally fake arguments with other Z list nobodies? Actually, I would like to thank everyone who thinks that my thread is worth following. With the caveat that if you dropped in out of interest over what I was modelling, you can be forgiven for peering behind the curtain. If you actively chose to follow this mentally unstable eclectic rubbish then it's on you. There will be some actual modelling shortly, I promise!
  19. Me neither, it puts me in mind of "Traction engine bling".
  20. I've had two Land Rovers, they were great for what they were intended for, but horrible for distance work and not pleasant to work on, which is presumably why the previous owners had neglected them.
  21. That's a very good idea and I would add don't weather rooves in batches, otherwise you unconsciously get a similar look to half a dozen vehicles.
