  1. Not simply latitude but pages and pages of different acceptable designs of fixtures and fixings as well as the bodies, frame manufacture etc. There aren't many easily accessible places to see the variety but Essery's Midland Railway wagon book shows the variety of axleboxes that this one company used. https://paulbartlett.zenfolio.com/wagondetailspoetc https://paulbartlett.zenfolio.com/axleboxes https://paulbartlett.zenfolio.com/brakerigging https://paulbartlett.zenfolio.com/buffers Paul
  2. Like this untidy mess! Unusual for me to take photos with workers in it but it was a lucky find unusually very close to my home. https://PaulBartlett.zenfolio.com/lmstube/e2a5cca05 https://PaulBartlett.zenfolio.com/lmstube/e21b3c360 Paul
  3. This book has a lot of the RCH drawings as well as explaining how such wagons were developed. And it is available! https://hmrs.org.uk/private-owner-wagons-ince-waggon-co-book.html Paul

  8. Quite clearly there are two lengths illustrated. They didn't change running number so the 12ft wb ex Pipes can be seen on some of the official photos. Paul
  9. I still keep coming back to these. I don't understand why a model is in this topic. OK some aspects are well done - the trees are unusually large and realistic but just plonking the PMV on the platform looks awful. Paul
  10. And a grossly overpowered steel train - I realise that Bachy BDAs are expensive, if you can get them. Paul
  11. I managed one TADPOLE at Woodhams. Not sure it has extra weight, but it does have the departmental fishkind. https://PaulBartlett.zenfolio.com/srvan/e80cd3bd Paul
  12. Yes, very dry early on that summer. We went away to Iran that May time and I remember coming back at Heathrow and noticing that the grass verges looked more like a desert than Iran (I exaggerate, but only slightly). 1976 was memorable because it followed the unusually hot 1975, so insects in particular had a ball. With 1976 so hot we also had plagues of ladybirds. I remember the memo around all MAFF offices that under no circumstances must any staff member give advice on control of ladybirds - they were the good guys, but the big 7 spots hav a nasty bite! 1976, One of the wettest years on record (until the last few months I suspect) Once it began to rain c 8 September 76 it didn't stop until c March 77. By the way there were green 20s at Toton when we wagonned there in September 1978 https://PaulBartlett.zenfolio.com/brclass20/e3680380a Paul
  13. No, I have no idea where I got that Chief Officer suggestion from, but presumably correct! What is odd is that CO continued to be used well into BR days and whether there was control by a Chief Officer or simply it was always written like that" I don't know. I still think Construction seems more likely! Paul
  14. The mother with two children is such a common site, but I don't believe I have ever seen it modelled before. Mum and Dad with a small child inbetween being swung along would also be a nice design. Paul
  15. Conserved Very little is "preserved", even the NRM is poor at preservation which suggests the artifact should remain in or be returned to an as used or as built condition. Paul

  17. OK put me out of my misery what the h... is a RRNE ? Please remember this is a forum for amateurs interested in railways, not for professional railway people. Paul
  18. Lichen grew very rapidly on the stone topping of our newly built garden walls. As a Biologist I was surprised just how quickly they established because I had been taught how slowly they are supposed to grow - and this is not in some remote wilderness area but a few hundred metres from York Station, with the York avoider rather closer. On topic, even new slates have some texture, just a little rub over with a glass fibre pen would have given some relief to the roof as modelled. I do agree that it is easy to overdo some aspects of weathering, but as a photographer for well over 50 years I am surprised how quickly some items weather. Paul
  19. Oh how we laughed down the club at the article about slate roofing. How perfect was that, should have used Slaters plastic, at least that has a bit of texture. I had a brand new slate roof on my house 26 years ago and it looked nothing like that neatness! Slates break, mould, slip especially in our damp climate when we do get the occasional very high winds. Paul
  20. ... and finally but not least Lowfell - chosen by the Chairman Finally, our sponsors Monk Bar Models. They organised and paid for the very attractive souvenir programme and flyers to advertise the show. Paul
  21. Wow, we had a great weekend. Really inspires that small local shows are the future for this hobby! Fortunately we hadn't filled the hall up too much because we were very busy on Saturday morning with queuing for the 2nd hand shop. It filled a store room. Lots of photos at https://paulbartlett.zenfolio.com/exhibition2024 The York Mayor and Mayoress opened the show and visited every exhibitor. They were very enthusiastic. They stayed for 2 hours and the Mayor returned briefly on Sunday! By the way, the Mayoress's chain of office may look very modern, but is believed to be 4 - 500 years old. And here are the cup winners. Stamford East N gauge The public choice layout Badgers Bottom voted by the members of the Ebor Group Paul
  22. That has been explained at some stage in all of this. Some complex technical issues. Similarly why the 68s cannot be muffled/silenced BUT it is the reason the North East finally got shut of them. Waking people at 4 O'clock in the mornings at new stabling points in Scarborough and York (and probably elsewhere) - so no good arguing locals knew what they were getting when they purchased nearby properties. Or, our very important wagon chat group 😇 couldn't hear ourselves think when sat soberly ! in The Tap on York station. Paul
