  1. As a basic decoder that seems to have good motor control, although not quite up to Zimo standards, I have used some of the Rails Connect decoders. They seem to be DCC Concepts based, so who knows where that is from, but at £20 they work well in Lima and Hornby RTR stuff. Not sure if they have Railcom though. Nigel L
  2. Across the road was the original Sledmere and Fimber station site, which had a level crossing at each end of the site. Now there is a car park and small log cabin cafe. The original crossing keepers bungalow is now a holiday rental home. Nigel L
  3. I visited the site at Fimber a month or so ago. Chatting to the volunteers it seems the have planning permission to get to Wetwang Green Lane, just need the money. There is no plan to go the other way towards Burdale, it would need two road crossings, and as stated above the landowners are not interested. Nigel L
  4. It was always steam worked, the passenger service finished in 1950, so too early for DMU's. The remaining goods workings were steam worked right to the end, J27's J39's and A8's with the odd mixed traffic loco. Nigel L
  5. A setup I have been using successfully for many years, on kits from 2mm to 7mm scale. I keep a separate iron and bit purely for whitemetal. I originally used the same bit for both whitemetal and brass kits, but the bits corroded very quickly, so now I keep them separate.   7. Well the 91 was probably there on a service train, there is one in the retro livery. The whole thing is to promote 100 years of 4472. There are a whole line up of events planned for next year, assuming it doesn't break down again!

  9. I've converted quite a few to DCC. Haven't bothered with a motor swap, but fitted decent decoders (Zimo) and the running is superb straight out of the box. Modified a couple of them with additional pickups, and fitted all of them with Lais Stay Alives.
  10. Sheffield station ended up with blue signs. The railway club I used to belong to had the original Millhouses and Ecclesall running in signs, also in blue. Nigel L

  12. It all depends on how far you go, train formations are another area where you can end up going down a rabbit hole. I had a long discussion with my son who works for a freight operator why modern container trains seems to be loaded at random, some wagons empty , some others only one container some fully loaded. Turns out it depends on if the containers are empty or loaded, which wagon in a fixed set they are on, and where they are in relation to the weight sensing devices on the wagon. Add to that the position of the set in the overall train and it becomes a nightmare to model. I didn't know this, and haven't seen it in any model magazine. Where do you stop?

  15. Quick bit of history. There was a quarry railway that ran down to Ambergate and was closing in the late 1950's. Members of the Talyllyn railway turned up to assess removing some of the rails. One was also a member of the fledgling Tramway Museum Society and the large stone buildings were thought suitable to store some of the trams they had collected. They then surveyed the area and decided a working museum could be built there, hence a tramway in the middle of nowhere!

  17. I think it is worth pointing out that Doug (who built the layout) is heavily into computers and new technology. The vast majority of the layout is 3D printed, including the buildings and the bridge itself. The DCC system is a MERG kit built system. I think the idea was to prove it could be done, as far as I am aware he thought it was the first T scale layout to be DCC operated. Last time I saw him he was building a model of both road and rail bridges at Saltash, including moving rail and road traffic! Nigel L
  18. You have obviously not seen the model of the Forth Bridge in T scale, DCC operated. Nigel L
  19. Never come across this on railways, but first generation tramways used flange bearing diamonds, the wheel ran on its flange through the crossing so it was quieter, smoother and with less track damage. Not sure if modern tramways use this, never looked.
  20. I wasn't sure if it was the only one in this livery. My son showed me some pictures the other day of 028 in the siding near Rotherham, so I assumed it would be that one as it was due to work a train through Lincoln. Nigel L
  21. A quick look on their website for the 13cm one says "12 volt (resistor fitted) Warm White LED (remove the resistor if you want to use a 3 volt supply)". I would check the website for the one you have. Nigel L
  22. I bit the bullet and bought the NCE USB adaptor, and the Autoswitch which is about £20. Using this set up it gives you a separate programming track output and can connect to JMRI. Okay it would cost about £70 in total, but it gives you all the flexibility and always connected to the computer for programming track or POM. Nigel L
  23. I wonder if any of you can help with this problem. I'm updating the firmware on various Zimo decoders using a MXULFA. All has gone well until I got to a couple of MX623R decoders. I keep getting "decoder not found". The decoders are plugged into a decoder tester, which has a motor attached to act as a load. The programmer says it is writing cv29 and cv144, and the motor kicks as expected, but then when it says "locating decoder" it returns the "decoder not found" message. I've tried writing 0 to cv144 and made sure cv29 is not set for DC operation. I also read that writing 1 to cv112 may help, and I've done a full decoder reset but still no joy. The MXULFA has the latest firmware installed, and I have the latest firmware for the decoders (Ver40.5). So far I have successfully updated about 15 decoders, but the 623's have defeated me. Any ideas? Nigel L
  24. The sound chip will probably have the cab lights on a different function key. You just replace the existing chip with the sound chip.
