  1. Picking up from last bit here's all three numbered and ready for weathering: With all decals complete the fun can begin. A weathered roof should not in my opinion be a few puffs of exhaust it needs a bit more, starting with a few selected washes to bring out the detail: Here it is beginning to build up the definition on the panel lines and creep into the recesses - excess can be blended in with a brush or removed when dry building up to something like this: or this.... Then these.... With all that out the way they are now ready for some airbrush
  2. Next up was the black window surrounds and the dreaded cant rails - tidy as possible but these are going to get a battering (sorry for the quality of the pic screen shot off the PC as Icloud deleted my pics The paint around the windows is a bit ropey and got tidied up a bit, there's only so much that's acceptable! Numbers and arrows etc up next: So in its raw state looking something like this, engine room window cocked up by over zealous maskol!! : All very bland but
  3. I've just joined RM web and started a blog on the Virgin 87s but due to work on the house these have had to be put on hold. Thought I would share a rework of three NSE 50s back to large logo:This was the starting point: The bodyshells had all the printed details removed and then the NSE stripes so a smooth coat of primer could be applied. As usual the doors on a 50 were playing hard to get so hence they had to come off.... Light primer coat applied and rubbed down to highlight any further "lumpy bits" Then a second primer coat to the bodysides
  4. Next up on the 50s was to lay down the yellow ends, not forgetting the doors.... BR Blue was then the order of the day, starting with the grilles and then the bodysides With the blue dried off after a few days this was masked and the grey roof applied over the black to leave some pre-shading The rough finish with all the masking off is something like this

  6. Hi Everyone, I'm new to RM web so please forgive the postings in the wrong place or in the wrong thread. I have being doing railway modelling and kit modeling for over 30 years and from September this year will be taking commissions ( am I allowed to say that?) I will try and post regular updates of what I'm doing as well as anything else that could be of interest. Cheers Jerry
  7. Can anybody point me to a user guide for the site - I'm not normally a luddite but sometimes I get pics appear sometimes not ! Do I post in a blog which I'm attempting with the Virgin 87s or how else should I do it? - sorry for being a numb nuts if there is an obvious eejits guide and I have missed it!

Don't think there is such a thing as a user guide.  Just browse your way around the forum and you will soon find the areas that interest you and the areas that don't, the threads where people of similar inclination to yourself reside and the threads where those you want nothing to do with reside.  As time goes on you will realise that high-class modelling is high-class modelling, no matter what scale, gauge, era, area etc. etc it is set and that you can both appreciate and learn from it, even if it has no relevance whatsoever to your own sphere of interest.

      Above all, enjoy!

Hi, instead of a blog, you might be better starting a thread in the Modifying and detailing RTR section, which is here:

      https://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/forum/176-modifying-detailing-rtr-stock/

You will probably get more response that way, and it means all your work can be in a single thread instead of individual blogs.

      Cheers,

      Al.

    Virgin 87s

Last little bit on this one for for the evening is a tidy up of the front and to blend some of the weathering together - 3 more to do....

    Virgin 87s

Apart from the insulators the fire tanks are also too dirty so some of the weathering is stripped back, likewise along the cable run on the roof which was repainted from Hornby's orange to a more muted maroon, again before and after pics

With the airbrush coat of weathering its time to recover and sharpen up some of the detail. First up are the insulators on the roof - a quick before and after:

    Virgin 87s

Today's efforts have seen the first application of weathering to the roof. Basic coating with some shadows and highlights and time to leave to dry before detail painting. The Virgin livery is a good basis for weathering and they were actually pretty grotty when studying reference pics.

Here are a couple more - wash on the front is totally OTT but will be calmed down over the coming days

    Virgin 87s

Here are the 4 locos renumbered and renamed with a wash going on the roof of the first one to give a comparison with the factory finish, later on applied to all 4 and left to marinate for a few days
  14. Finally decided to join RM Web as its good to see what is being produced and help to improve my own modelling Just finished a 37 as 37057 - damn I hate cant rails and before everyone shouts yes I know it should have a plated over boiler port!
