  1. Now that the Fairburn is being painted and transfered, photos to follow.l bought the 0 gauge 9f kit, i still fancy the WD 2-8-0 kit,up until now, there was a choice of two,the MM1 kit with a resin boiler or the Roxey mouldings model which has an etched boiler which has to be rolled by the builder. My problem is that i`m trying to decide whether to buy a 12" bending roll, not particularly expensive at round about £90 but will i get the use out of it.The MM1 kit is now not available owing to illness in the family so it`s Roxey or nothing. Ray
  2. Jennings were still in exsistance at the start of 2014,there is a facebook page but there have been no entries since that time.I bought oneof the first Farish Cl.101 N scale dmus and a Minitrix Mallard there in the early 80s. A model shop we had in Northampton in St.Leonards rd for a short while was Bec models but it was quite short lived. Ray.
  3. Another one on the same day. Ray
  4. Here we are,a blast from the past,Ally Pally,mid 1950s. Ray.
  5. I think they sold mainly scatter materials for landscaping but i think their interests probably went further than that.Have a look here. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beatties_of_London Ray.
  6. Beatties were sold to Richard Khonstham whose trademark was RIKO. Ray.
  7. As a young lad in the late 1950s,i lived in Harringay and would cycle to the old Southgate Hobby shop when it first opened in half a shop next to the boot repair shop where they had shelves full of s/h wagons etc,the controllers was in a room at the back.I still remember cycling along Green Lanes, left at the Triangle and up Aldermans hill turning right at the top to Southgate, uphill althe way.Howell Dimmock i remember very well,I bought a Ks Fowler tank kit one Christmas, never did get it to run well.In the 60s,i used to work in a shop and used to get half day Thursdays off.Bus to Manor House tube station to Baker St and walk to W & H who were in Paddington st.at the time before moving to New Cavendish St.Through the back doubles to Warren St passing the Trix showrooms on the left and catching the bus home. All gone now,i`m nearly 80 but the memories are still strong. As an aside, when i moved to Northampton, there was a Beatties store in the town shopping centre and talking to one of the staff there,he was bemoaning the fact that it wasn`t a real model shop any more, just plastic junk. This was in the late1980s. Ray.
  8. I bought a Proxxon drill and kit several years ago, worst purchase I ever made.Too fast on the slowest setting for handheld work, you need the attachments to use it properly, you need two hands to switch it on.Take my advice ,buy a Dremel or any decent minidrill with a one hand switch and and an adjustable speed. Ray.
  9. Still can`t find the brake prints but if you do need them,i can resize them from the SD versions or print them and have SD coach in the rake. Ray
  10. Thanks, feel free to download and print onto a decent a4 gloss photo paper. Ray
  11. The blue grey coaches are card overlays that i produced specially for this train, i thought i did a set for the brake but i can`t find them at the moment. Ray.
  12. The sideframes were cut to make the axleboxes to line up with the wheels and butted and glued with plastic weld, small sections of plastic were welded to the backs and drilled and tapped for the fixing screws.I didn`t smooth the body, the raised moudings were excellent guides for the lining, the only slight problem came with applying the chevrons, they had to be cut into sections as they were not designed to match the mouldings.Heres a pic of the internal construction. Ray
  13. This is my Kiutmaster/Dapol Deltic on a modified Dublo Co Co chassis. The paint was Belton Molotow Shock blue, the lighter of the two shades, the roof was an acrylic grey,Humbrol or Tamiya,i cant remeber which. The transfers are Fox. Ray.
  14. Some of us use Halfords rattle cans shrinkflation has taken its toll on them,I wanted a couple of cans of satin black and wheras the used to be in 400-500ml volume, now they are in 300ml for the same price. Ray
  15. Humbrol enamel paints have been pulled from the market by Hornby due to some chemical which may be hazadous, not certain what,i`ve been using them since the 1950s and nothing`s happened yet. This is some information i got from a freind," I got this message from a friend of mine on another up to date forum. "Good Day Ray, I have just been speaking to a guy at Hornby technical regards Humbrol enamel paints. They are working on a new formula and will be releasing the new formula enamel paints soon. He did not give a date but did say quite soon" randall24642 Post #31 May 24, 2022 Forum: Waiting Room Ray.
  16. Over the years, ringfields can be temperamental.Having had several that were a bit dilatory, I discovered that some of them had one pure carbon brush and one copper carbon brush, this being impregnated with oil over the years causing sparking and sometimes, the burn out of the armature. Once fitted with pure carbon brushes, the problem mainly disappeared. As an aside, the National Physical Laboratory used these motors in the scale model hulls in their test tanks. Ray.
  17. It probably wore off in service, that`s if they were ever painted in the first place. It`s just that i liked the colour scheme, you can`t really see it with the cab roof on which is detachable. Ray.
  18. Just a bit of an update, details temporarily placed in the cab, making the wood floor was one the exasperations trying to make it fit, this was the third attempt after dealing with the ply splitting. Ray.
  19. As my DJH Fairburn is almost finished bar a few details and painting,my thoughts turned to the next loco.An offer popped up in my email about a DJH sale for the 9f kit at a reduced price and i just couldn`t resist it.Anyway here it is,a large box of bits, should keep me occupied for a while. Ray.
  20. Well, almost finished except for a few details. Got to take a deep breath to strip it down for painting but it may be a while yet.Now to think about the next one,may be a WD 2 8 0 or a DJH 9F.Nice thoughts to have though!.Looking for an injector now but not being au fait with them,i don`t know which to order. Ray.
  21. This is my modern Hornby Sir William Stanier, one of the few that can handle HD SD coaches.
  22. No problem with haulage in either direction, the power bogie is prevented from tipping by means of a shoulder screw which runs in a slot in the chssis. The most common fault is that the pantographs won`t stay down,i spent a long time studying the geometry and in the end,it was the angle of the pivot plate that the arm pivots on. Ray.
  23. Here`s one of my Dublo AL1s running collecting from the wire with a train of Dublo die cast tank wagons, can`t really fault the haulage.
  24. Thanks Tony, with the aid of the internet,i discovered where they went. It`s nearly finished now,a few items to add,the weighshaft and lifting links will be added after painting,a job i`m not looking forward to as it involves stripping it apart. Ray
  25. Try these, very quick colour change in Photoshop CS2 just now. Ray.
