  1. Come on, somebody must have some T&W Metro pictures.

Now lets see a picture witha Metro unit on it (or elsewhere)

    Keith

First I have to locate the slidebox then scan the slide, then send it all the way from Australia

Taken in March 1989 at Tynemouth station (I think - feel free to correct me if wrong). Best viewed full screen.

EDIT: The station is Whitley Bay - see below.

Next: Steam and diesel in the same image - but not doubleheading

  2. I wonder whether it is that Bachmann have supplied (dumped) a bulk load of new cheaper stock or they have simply authorised retailers to be able to discount their existing unsold stock by a greater than usual amount, perhaps providing some funding support.

    G.

If you look at the in stock that's on offer at heavy discounts at the moment it is the same models (more or less) at each of the individual retailers - too much of a coincidence?

Polish Railways Pm2 34 was built by Berliner Maschinenbau AG (BMAG) in 1936 (Works no. 10629) one of 298 Class 03  light Pacifics built for the German Railways between 1930 and 1937, 36 of which passed to Poland after WWII.
On 29 July 1977 it was coming off Bydgoszcz shed to work the 1219hrs Bydgoszcz  to Piła passenger service.  It was painted a sort of drab olive/green/brown which  hasn't gone down to well with 34-year old Agfachrome.

Not a particularly great shot, but included for posterity's sake.

One of the former Tyneside two car units that became 2-EPBs on the Southern, and which (in this case 5791) were often regulars on the West Croydon to Wimbledon 'cross-country' service - now of course part of the Croydon Tramlink. Taken at West Croydon circa 1972 from a moving train heading home to Sutton.

  5. Also Phibsboro and Stephen's Green.

RA37 was a regular on the 27B when I were a nipper. Almost a family friend.

Nice to see 3 of the 4 liveries carried by these buses.

I must try to upload my pictures of the same event. Were you a passenger on the (overloaded) C class mini tour?

No - it was a very rushed visit. I came down from Belfast on a RPSI steam tour, but it was running rather late so time was tight.

  6. In July 1981, classic former Pennsylvania Railroad GG1 electric no.4884 in service with the New Jersey Transit authority is seen at Newark, NJ with a westbound Amtrak service bound, if memory serves correctly, for Washington. The GG1 was covering for a failed Amtrak locomotive.

I was staying with friends in New York for a few days and made a brief afternoon excursion to Newark in the hope of seeing one of these, what were then, rare beasts and ended up with two, the headlight of the second can be seen illuminating the carriage sides.

  8. Interestingly, when I was on holiday in Sth Devon for the last weeks of August 1969, I saw Falcon on a regular basis between Taunton and Newton Abbot.

I used to catch the Devonian from Paignton to Exeter St Davids and on the 20th and 21st Aug my records show that we passed D0280 at Dawlish, and my vague memory is that it was on a Motorail service. I don't have any loco diagrams nor any WTTs, but I do have my dog-eared public timetable from those days, and the Dawlish stop for my train was 1048.

The only service that could have been was the 0745 Kensington Olympia to Totnes (FO to St Austell)which only ran on certain days of the week in Summer. It was non-stop for much of its journey but was due to arrive in Totnes at 1210, so just before 1100 at Dawlish is not too far out given the queue of trains over that stretch in those summer months.

Why a Bath Road loco was rostered I don't know, but it might have logically spent a few hours at Old Oak early in the morning, depending on what the previous working was. Maybe someone has these loco diagram records?

I also saw it in the up direction at Exeter in the early evening, so it may well have been on the return service from Totnes to Olympia which passed St Davids at around 1830.

Yep, I have a very poor B & W photo (Brownie 127) of it taken at the carriage sidings at Paignton in August 1969 while on holiday down there.

  9. It's a fine line between what constitutes a holiday and an all out train chasing trip, but a fairly relaxed winter trip to Switzerland late in 1988 probably was closer to a holiday than most. Lucky enough to catch one of the Rhätische Bahn 'krokodils' after going down for an evening walk to the station at Davos.

  10. Now there's a funny coincidence.........

First up we have RM 706 doing the tilt test at Aldenham Works in July 1972 (not the greatest quality, taken on dodgy film stock on a Canon Dial half frame camera).

    post-4406-0-47313500-1496889246_thumb.jpg

17 years later in March 1989, RM 706 again seen when in service with Carlislebus (although it was over two decades later before someone pointed it out the connection to me).

  11. I personally find it hilarious that this milk train is practically the same composition of those of the Western Region in the early BR days. A puffing loco, 15 milk wagons, and a brake coach tagged onto the rear!

MILK Express for the First time on YouTube! - YouTube

At least the Indians (and the New Zealanders) still carry milk on rail.

They probably think it hilarious that we're not smart enough to do likewise  :jester:

  12. ..and expensive too I would imagine. My own bus is a 74 seater and it's looking like I'll have re-do them all :O

    JF

One of the owners did explain it to me at the time although I cant remember the exact details. It wasn't cheap, but they were able to keep things affordable by buying in 'bulk' and sharing the order with a couple of other heritage owners.
