I've often wondered, was there any connection (design-wise) between these and their similar looking German counterparts?
-
At least part of the weight difference results from 2-7 having only a single gearbox whereas 8 and above had two. In the earlier types, the second engine had a direct drive and only came into use once the railcar had achieved a reasonable speed. The later types just used the two engines and gearboxes together at all times.
Nick
Hopefully Dapol will pick up on these important details otherwise I certainly won't be buying any

Going back to the Altrincham DC Units (Class 505) , (just a note these were not AM1 (that was the Lanchaster-Heysham class 301 Units as they were AC!))
Did any of these units have the Blue; Full yellow ends, but with the extended wrap around yellow (probably to include the drivers door, sure I saw a photo but can't find it), this livery was found on some LMR 304s and some Class 504s. Not sure if any Mersey electric units recieved this livery, which was applied to some DMUs aswell.
Several to be found in this flickr set, wrap round, but not including the drivers door

I've only just picked this up, but I'm sorry to hear that Motor Books is closing (closed?). Having worked in Holborn for some forty seven years, I visited the shop now and again. Also St Martins Models was a regular stop. I have a very large collection of 1/43rd Ferrari's (150+) - now all boxed up in the loft - interest isn't what it was! I used to check out Motor Books for early copies of the Autocourse F1 annual - I have them all from 1968 - earlier than that attract very serious prices. As has already been said London rents are crucifying small specialist shops. I used to go into St Martins Model on average of once a week, there was never ever anybody else in the shop - and it was lunch hour.
If no-one is visiting these shops as several have reported, then simple logic dictates it is more than London rents that is crucifying them.

Are they proposing to convert everything in Adelaide to standard gauge?
Adelaide's metro network remains at 5'3". Any plans for standardisation are currently on ice.
It may happen one day in the future, it may not.

...... massive delays between announcements and releases........
Not exclusive to Dapol but endemic throughout the model rail industry at the moment - check out the whingeing on some of the US model rail sites.

Some hilarious stuff on here.
Obviously we have one or two candidates for Dave's job making their public pitch for the position.
They do seem to have ALL the answers.

IR loco's will soon become QUBE Red Terror I have heard, as I'm certain that QUBE own IR.
The new track recording car reminds me I need to go and get some more shots of ML-039 before it's gone. They look quite nice and modern though. I wonder what'll happen to ML-039 and ML-070 when they are replaced?
QUBE do indeed own IRA. QUBE's colours however are yellow and silver/grey

Is the zig zag railway still closed? Went there when we were in Australia about 6 years ago. We also went to the Hunter Valley Mining museum, unfortunately the steam failed just before departure and they replaced with a diesel. Was quite an interesting place if somewhat shabby and we met some great characters there.
Zig Zag is still closed. Volunteers are still working towards getting it re-opened.

Some video (not mine) taken yesterday. In preparation for the National Railway Museum's (Port Adelaide) "Railway Yard Sale" event, a large shunt had to take place on the 15th of June 2013. The shunt involved the clearing a road of Narrow Gauge (3'6") items, using standard gauge (4' 8 1/2") diesel loco, English-Electric powered no.515.
The track is actually triple gauge.
One of the shunt movements involved coupling together Ex-South Australian Railways (SAR) Garratt 402 with Ex-SAR T Class 253, a regular occurrence with the SAR and yet, has never been done at the museum.

I'm assuming that the planned service reinstatement date includes any driver training. I'm confident the TOCs and FOCs won't have forgotten to plan for it.
I thought it was plainly obvious that they had from the press release linked earlier in the thread.
