I did get to travel on the branch once in the mid 1960s en route to a scout camp in Guernsey ......

I wonder if its the same camp I went to in Guernsey during August 1967? My first ever mainline train journey was behind a Class 47 on the Channel Islands Boat Express in Bullied stock. Still numerous dumped steam locos to be seen at sheds along the way and Hymeks at Weymouth. Haulage of the branch from memory was by a Class 03 shunter.

Four in one day - Monday 11 March 2013 - I was quite happy with that, although a bit more sun would have helped.

A few pics taken last weekend of operations around Whyalla and Port Augusta, South Australia.

Two Pacific National GE-powered NR class locos climb away from Yorkeys Crossing near Port Augusta with train 5MP7 bound for Perth on Friday evening 8 Feb 2013. 

About 25 minutes later two of Aurizon's GE-powered 6020 class at the same location with 5MP1 service for Perth.

The following day, again in roughly the same locality, two of Genesee & Wyoming Australia's (GWA) EMD-powered GWA class lead train no.9612 loaded iron ore from Wirrida to Port Augusta where the train will reverse and head to Whyalla. A further two GWAs are attached to the rear of the train as distributed power.

At the recently re-activated mine at Iron Baron on the 3'6" tramway network radiating from Whyalla, an export iron ore train headed by GWA locomotives 1907/CK3 is being loaded by front end loader (out of sight) on Saturday morning 9 Feb 2013.

The following day, the same loco combination heads a loaded train from the Iron Knight mine back to Whyalla.

Early Sunday morning on 9 Feb 2013 and GWA locos 1301/901/904 and a rake of empties depart for the mine at Iron Baron.

Back in Whyalla that evening the same combo propels its train back towards the unloading pit.

Is it just me? or do the Dapol cabside windows look narrower than the Hornby ones... ........

On the down journey two weeks earlier, at least 2 73 class were noted and 3 Class 35s D7017/D7066/D7069 noted in the Weymouth area.

As someone has already mentioned pic is by Robin Lush. Appears on p25 of Diesels in the Pennines - image shown on here is a slightly better scan and not taken from the book. p24 has a pair of 25s (D7595/D7597) on one of the footex on the same day passing Torside LX.

Australian National Alco 'World' 945 leads two Alco DL531 siblings 832/842 upgrade near the Adelaide suburb of Eden Hills with the Sunday afternoon goods from Adelaide to Mount Gambier in March 1987.

The regular weekly Adelaide to Strathalbyn goods behind Alco branchliners 839/844 passes through the station at Bridgewater in the Adelaide Hills on 24 April 1987.

I could write a 1000 words about this image. The US Roadrailer concept was marketed in Australi under the Trailerail banner. Near Port Augusta in January 1997, a short consist trails Goninan/GE built EL61 forming an Adelaide to Perth service.

An Adelaide to Melbourne 'superfreighter' passes through suburban Lynton and starts its climb through the Adelaide Hills behind S307/937/931 - 18 January 1988.

Displaced in 1997 from interstate passenger trains the CLPs still found gainful employment on transcontinental freight services. On 20 December 1998, CLP17/CLP9 are near the site of Burnsfield in the Mid North with a Perth to Adelaide freight service operated on behalf of the Toll group.

13 May 1967 - Birchington

More of the mundane. My paternal grandparents lived on Epple Bay Road at Birchington, which backed onto the railway line and which made spotting over the fence a fairly leisurely exercise. Of note this day are the former Brighton line 6-COR units, more than likely on a Saturday relief service to Ramsgate.
