  1. I was thinking of buying a holiday caravan for all the family to use as a convenient getaway through the year, but prices have now risen by 50% or more in the last few months. A second hand one in an acceptable area (not East or Southeast costs because we already have relatives near there) which was £20,000 last winter is now at least £30,000. I've given that idea up, unless the British weather causes a sudden desire within the holiday home masses to sell up and buy something overseas, and prices crash; but I'm not holding my breath. The annual pitch/running costs seem to have risen well above inflation also.
  2. More fool me for actually bothering to share notes of which I have no knowledge. I will not be making this mistake again.
  3. I have no idea. I just transcribed what is on the page of the notebook which I have.
  4. For retro bus enthusiasts.... Buses seen at High Wycombe on this day 67 years ago - August 28th 1954. 5. Thanks very much. That is great.
  6. Apologies if I am hijacking the thread for selfish reasons, but on rummaging through my late father's files I have discovered a share certificate from the 1990s for a few thousand shares in the GCR PLC. As executor to his estate, I need to calculate monetary values of such things for Inheritance Tax purposes. Would anyone know the value of 1 share in the railway? I have looked on the website, but it only really mentions donating shares to them. That may come later, but I am not in a position to do so at the moment.
  7. Just driven to/from Bristol to East Lincs for my Dad's funeral. Same old routine of tailgaters by BMWs, Audis, 4x4s especially Discoveries; and this time - some form of Saab. And yet all the tossers who own these car brands insist - "its not me gov, I'm the world's most considerate driver". B0ll0cks. It appears that everyone must go from 0-60 in 4 seconds away from every traffic light or roundabout. Why? I am now seriously considering giving up driving altogether, and going everywhere by public transport.
  8. Yes, but the Strathwood packers are probably allowed to use the toilet during an 8 hour shift, without their pay being docked.
  9. Really? Are you saying (a) this place does not exist? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wuhan_Institute_of_Virology Or, (b) it does exist, but we are not allowed to mention it?
  10. Another 3-track section was from Grantham to High Dyke sidings. The third track was on the up side and was used by goods trains climbing up towards Stoke Tunnel. There was no down equivalent, presumably because it was downhill all the way to Grantham South and the faster running goods trains in that direction could be fitted in between the expresses?
  11. This may be 'news' to the Chinese, but it is a theory which has been floating around unofficial narrative sites for over a year. However, it seems to revolve around the World Military Games which was held in October 2019, in Wuhan. The US team did not perform at their usual high level, and the theory is they were infected before they arrived. The main problem I have with this, is that if they had been accidentally infected and were (at the time) asymptomatic, surely they would have infected athletes from many other countries, and also their friends and relatives in the US when they returned home. And yet only the Wuhan area seems to have seen an explosion of cases in the early stages; unless the Chinese are not being honest with their statistics.
  12. I spent some hours on Stafford station just over 30 years ago now on 13th August 1991. I only saw 2 HSTs pass by during that time, and they were - 43096 41147 40401 42254 42258 42262 42266 44000 43067 and 43056 41114 40427 42231 42232 42233 42234 44074 43078 A couple of weeks later (24th August) I visited Crewe and saw - 43057 44050 42149 42148 42328 42341 40704 41076 41116 43096 On October 12th I went to Crewe again (for the depot open day) and saw - 43084 41095 40402 42326 42187 42188 42189 44969 43097 and I only noted part of the next HST 43088 44062 42278 42270 41148 43123 but I saw two more 43069 44000 42266 42262 42258 42254 40401 41147 43071 which is the same set as seen at Stafford but with different power cars. 43128 44010 42032 42031 42333 40210 41022 41021 43196
  13. Six Bells Junction doesn't have a lot of info on the train, but it appears to have been run around the end of April/beginning of May 1989. It seems to have been a very upmarket train with 6 Mk3 sleepers as well as 10 other coaches - making 16 in all. Is it on the slow lines? That would make sense with a 47 in charge. Other than that, I am as much in the dark as you are.
  14. Although, I get a daily email from one shop which sells second hand items. I can currently buy a Bachmann 04 2-8-0 second hand for £87, whereas the closest version brand new would set me back £130. I think that for a saving of £43 I would not mind spending an hour cleaning the wheels.
  15. I doubt that planned service cuts will be necessary once the robotic annual price rises of RPI + 1% are implemented next January. Fares will soon be so high that only Nicola Sturgeon and HM The Queen will be able to afford a ticket. Once no one is using the trains, all lines can be closed, then converted into guided busways.
  16. I'm not sure. I can't decide whether the implication is that all second hand items should have never been used, or that well known shops should spend valuable time cleaning the second hand models before they put them on sale. Or possibly someone who believes that a moaning thread on RMWeb will result in lots of replies to back them up, as each contributor vies to out-whinge the previous one?
  17. Cloudy but dry (I think) here in North Somerset. Radar suggests there maybe patchy drizzle in the vicinity but I'm too lazy to bother looking outside that closely. Swmbo is on her hols, so I have the place to myself, which imparts a kind of freedom that takes me by surprise.
  18. I remember being on the M5 in Gloucestershire many years ago when some kind of sports car (sorry that is about the limit of my knowledge) in the fast lane shot by me at great speed. I thought 'he must be in a hurry' as he must have been doing well over 100mph. A couple of minutes later a police car with its blue lights flashing came by in the fast lane at similar speed. A few miles further up the road near the next exit, I could see the police car on the hard shoulder with what appeared to be the high speed sports car in front. 'Gotcha' I thought, but as I approached the cars, the sports car driver's door opened and out stepped a uniformed policeman. Strange goings on in them there parts.
  19. Yes, my Dad also hated Ford drivers for some reason and he drove a BMW in later years. I loved Fords, and had them continuously from an old Mk2 Cortina in 1975 right through until I sold a Mondeo in 2014. Yes I know the early ones rusted, as did most cars of that era; but I just liked some of the little touches which I miss on other cars, like the 6-position intermittent wipers on the last few Mondeos I had. You might think 6 speeds of intermittent is overkill, but it is amazing how quickly they become indispensable in varying weather conditions and with spray when overtaking lorries on motorways. I mostly had estates, and it is amazing how much can be fitted into the back of a Mondeo estate with all the back seats down. This feature saved me hundreds in van hire charges when my children were younger and moving to new bedsits/flats every year or so.
  20. I believe that a lot of the problems you describe have been increased by the wider availability of car leasing these days. Now, instead of paying for a mortgage or rent on a studio apartment; just live with your parents and blow the £500+ a month on a 7-series BMW. It appears that these days, life is increasingly about showing off - and what better way (in the minds of show-offs) to do it than with a very expensive car?
  21. Thanks. Who would have thought that activating a voice-over feature would result in a blue box on iPhone photographs? But that is modern day Apple for you - add intensely irritating, but no doubt 'cool' features, by the development droids who think they are cleverer than mere mortals.
  22. I don't know what it is, but it appears on every jpeg I take with a face on it. I have an iPhone 11.
