  1. I have an existing 26ft x 10ft exhibition layout and I am aware of the time it takes to set up and dismantle at a show. So I am thinking of various ways to cut that down on my next layout. One area I'm looking at is the time it takes to screw boards together with 8mm bolts and so I was thinking of using something like this instead ……………… Any thoughts?
  2. In addition to club owned layouts like Addison Road (7mm) and Northwick (OO) Twickenham MRC members often take their private layouts onto the exhibition circuit. One such layout is a retro 1961 themed 'kitchen table' layout built by Paul Stapleton. Originally built for Twickenham MRC's 50th anniversary exhibition in 2011 the layout seeks to show what a typical 1961 proprietary toy train layout looked like. Built using s/h Tri-ang TT items this will bring back memories (both good and bad) for many an exhibition visitor. Everything you see in this photo is permanently glued into position except the tea cup which will have some tea leaves and a half eaten Bourbon biscuit in the saucer when it's exhibited. This layout can be seen at the SW HERTS MRS show this Saturday - do say hello if you attend.

Twickenham & District MRC's annual Open Day will feature six working layouts in O, OO and N plus two demonstrations - weathering and wiring - plus static displays, refreshments and the club s/h stand. Layouts : KENSINGTON ADDISON ROAD : This large and ambitious 7mm layout has been seen at many of the county's biggest shows in the last two years and now the club has the chance to show it to local modellers in our spacious clubroom. EASTGATE : Our new current era OO layout - D&E modellers VERY welcome - come and talk to us! MILTON : We are starting a new N gauge layout very soon - in the mean time we are showing our large modular N gauge project. OO SHUNTING PUZZLE : Come and have a go! MEMBER'S GUEST LAYOUT - What might it be? DRIVE-A-TRAIN : For our younger visitors You can read about ADDISON ROAD on its thread on RMweb. Here's a recent photo and if you come to our open day we'll tell you why there's an elephant on the platform - honestly it's authentic!
  4. I have been doing more repairs/corrections to the layout. We always had a curious DCC issue ( at least curious to those of us not used to DCC! ). I have broken the layout into 4 separate power districts corresponding to the four circuits. The problem was caused by accidently linking circuit 2 & 3 which meant that a short on 2 would close down 3 as well. I've now sorted the problem ( well I thought I had but it needed testing). So I set up a couple of boards (inc the one that had had the problem) and tested the DCC. All correct! A short on any track 1,2,3 or 4 only shuts down that circuit - job done!
  5. I never modelled TT back in the days of Tri-ang, in fact I've never modelled in 3mm at all except back in 2011 I built a retro TT layout for Twickenham MRC's 50th anniversary show. The idea was to recreate a 1961 'kitchen table' layout and show what modelling was like at the time the club was formed. I have recently dug it out and will be showing at the SW Herts exhibition this Saturday. What has amazed me is that I have literally not touched it for 8 years and without even cleaning the track or the locos it ran perfectly. Yes, without cleaning the steel rails for eight years the locos ran round very nicely. Here's a photo - everything you see with the exception of the tea cup is permanently glued in position. All I need to do is set the board up on a table, put the drape round and plug in - job done!
  6. As the OP I'm very interested as I am finally getting round to tackling this problem. Thank you, I will try this …… anyone else got any ideas?
  7. Thanks . You're absolutely right - a case of 'fridge blindness' on my behalf - I just didn't see that option. It would have been the best way forward, but now that I've wasted a precious hour messing with the point motor I am inclined to just swap the trains over as where I am now it's the quickest/easiest option and as each train only comes in/ goes out of one dedicated road the problem will no longer arise. Thanks for taking an interest.
  8. I have spent the day on several issues including sorting some problems we had at the Stevenage show. One odd problem was the long class 25G coaches hitting the recently added surface mounted point motor when running into track 10 via the PECO Setrack curved point. I started by cutting/filing away at the point motor in the hope that it would allow the coaches to pass without any problems But the XL Baggage and the CA diner still hit it when taking the tight radius - see the photo below. So have abandoned modifying the point motor and decided to take the easy way out …….. swapping the Class 25G passenger train with the container train. Therefore the long passenger cars now go in/out of track # 6 and through the larger radius of the curved point
  9. I can only concur that this/these is/are absolutely superb layout(s). I believe I saw one of them at Aly Paly a few years back.
  10. LEADING RECORDS - that brings back memories BLUE STORIES FROM YOU KNOW WHO - who might that be pray?? WINDOW INSURANCE - I'll ask Bernie about that when I see him!
  11. The 'real' VICTORS ended in 2000 in pentonville road. After that it was fake Victor's
  12. A brilliant idea - real left field thinking. Al, you need to patent this idea before PECO get wind of it!
  13. I have tried to create scenes I've seen (no pun intended) in China. One I was reminded of recently when I viewed an old video was workers cadging a lift in a coal car. I searched the Preiser range, but couldn't find what I was looking for. I found some workmen like this one …... But their legs were going in the wrong direction and so had to cut them off at the knee and re-orientated them …. They need some repainting (including their skin colour!) but will eventually look something like this ….
  14. I had help from an ex-work colleague who now works as a house renovator - yes all on the walls in just over two days and all electrics in place hidden behind the plasterboard - can't hang around at my age!
  15. Please send me a PM with more details (like your name) and I will pass your message on to Bernie.
  16. VICTORS was more than a model shop in central London - it was a one-off, unique, quirky, a lunchtime club as much as a model shop. For those who don't know about VICTORS, it was a model railway shop that was based in Islington and ran from the 1970's (late 1960's??) until 2000 and didn't stock any British models except PECO track. It was all Roco, Athearn, Walthers, PFM etc. At the recent CMRA show there was a mini-staff reunion with Bernie Victor(centre) Stefan (left) and Dave (right) Does anyone have any fond memories of the shop I can pass on to Bernie?

Twickenham MRC are taking our great hobby right into the heart of the local community - a FREE 'POP-UP' exhibition in Twickenham Library. We hope to take our hobby to a new audience and show what our hobby can offer. The relaxed atmosphere of the library is an ideal location for newbies (and established modellers) to meet club members and see what Twickenham MRC has to offer. We will be showing up to four of our smaller layouts ... MILTON - our N gauge modular layout EASTGATE - our new current scene OO layout DRIVE-A-TRAIN - our 'have-a-go' layout for younger visitors ????????? - another layout yet to be confirmed. There will be static displays and a weathering demonstration. Why not come down and see what Twickenham MRC has to offer YOU?
  18. Hello Thanks for your interest but you have misunderstood the issue. The end protectors do extend beyond the boards and so the backscene is held off the floor already. So the problem was exactly the opposite - the bridge support was at the top of the upright board and gravity separated it from the baseboard edge when the board was moved around - it just needs gluing back in place. I hope that makes sense.
  19. I am getting there! The GOLDEN SPIKE - actually the GOLDEN SCREW!
  20. We have just discovered that our investigation to Trainswest has been put back to 2021 so now only have two exhibitions booked for 2020. If anyone reading this is in a position to offer an invite in 2020 please send me a PM. The layout is 26ft x 10ft and requires a team of six and I regret we can't consider one day shows. Our current bookings are ... 2019 Warley and Fareham 2020 Aly Paly and Peterborough
  21. As the OP, thanks to everyone for posting. I am starting the work in 15 minutes - I will report back in 20 years to tell you all how it turned out.
  22. Hello again Thank you for your continued interest in my problem. On the advice of the shed manufacturer (CRANE GARDEN BUILDINGS) I have bought IRKO BREATHABLE MEMBRANE - is that a VP? Are you saying that I need to seal around the edges of the VP with tape or similar - I was just going to staple it to the frame. Paul
  23. Ok …. am starting the work tomorrow. I have gone with Celotex 50mm entirely. And 18mm moisture proof plasterboard. What I don't understand is that people are still telling me that I need a moisture proof membrane . If the Celotex is waterproof and the plaster board is moisture proof , why the membrane - thoughts? Also some people have said cut the membrane and hag it vertically between the uprights, whilst others have said lay it horizontally right along the walls including over the uprights - which is correct? Paul
  24. The materials have arrived to transform my shed into my layout room...…..
