  1. Hello Ron Fair enough - not a problem, I have no wish to contend that so please no further replies and perhaps Andy would delete this topic please
  2. Hello I hope this is considered a discussion rather than a question! Let me explain my problem... I already have about ten locos fitted with the US ECONAMI sound chips. I want eight more 8 pin ECONAMI sound chips for USA steam locos, but they are discontinued. I have tried some UK ZIMO chips but they didn't 'fit' with the ECONAMI US ones - both were fine but they were 'different' I have now been offered UK ECONAMI as solution. I don't want pumps and other noises as the locos just run through the scene and so my question is …. Does the basic chuffing on the UK ECONAMI match the US version ie if I use a mixture of the UK ones and the US ones will the chuffing sound similar . I ask this because I will often be double heading and so they need to sound similar.
  3. May I hi-jack this topic rather than starting a similar one. Back in 2008 I bought a new Bachmann 32-380DS 37698 COEDBACH with DCC sound. It has sat in its box for 11 years as I never developed a BR diesel project. I now want to sell it on ebay and so for the very first time I have test run it. It runs nicely and the sound works but the lights only work at one end. At one end the headlight and tail lights both work perfectly, at the other end nothing. I assume that this is not some CV issue that can be corrected, I assume that it is a PCB issue that cannot be addressed without a new replacement part. I do not want to invest much time/effort into this as I just want to sell it, could it be anything simple like a loose connection somewhere ?
  4. The recent house move still means that I have plenty of other things on my agenda other than the layout, but managed to spend some time on it today - the depot didn't have doors at Stevenage - it does now! On another subject, I have recently bought two 2018 production QJs from Hong Kong. I thought I had ordered 7143 and 7190, but turns out that I mistakenly ordered two 7190. So I've listed on ebay at a straight conversion (no VAT or duty) from its HK price - $(US) 500 - if anyone is interested. It may be that these two I bought will be the only two of thjat running number in the UK as this model was only released in China.
  5. Hello I've used paper quite a bit on my layout - mainly a pavements and platform surfaces. I am not storing the layout is the best conditions at the moment - in an uninsulated shed. I have used double sided tape to fix the paper to the styrene basic structure but it's coming up in bubbles since the storage situation changed. It may go back as/when I can control heat and humidity better but my fear is that I will need to re-do everything. I have removed the depot in these photos showing the platforms. What is the best way of fixing paper to styrene to avoid this problem? Thanks
  6. I have also started buying locos outside my era that will live in my showcase or may sometimes make a 'guest appearance' once in a while . Such as this one ………………….
  7. I have taken delivery of some new models I have a rake of 25K blue/white coaches - up until now they have all been Bachmann ones. The problem with Bachmann 25K class coaches is that the range is very restricted - YZ hard class seated coaches and YW hard class sleeping cars. Now N27 have introduced 25K coaches - the colour match is not perfect but after a little weathering it should not be that noticeable. The YW on the left is a Bachmann model and the CA (restaurant car) is the new N27 addition to the rake Here is the N27 RW soft class sleeper ………………………. Here is the N27 NL (baggage car)………………………
  8. I don't live in Thailand but I would be prepared to move there to get these items free.
  9. We're getting ready to 'GO!' 'GO!' to the Milton Keynes show that is - hope to meet many of you there - do come and say 'hello'. Despite winning three LNWR challenge awards the group is not resting on its laurels. Peter has been working on a new super-drive for the LMS liveried Oerlikon set. It should now run as good as it looks................................ and it looks pretty damn good .................................
  10. Moving to a new house which needs a lot of work has been a big distraction, but am doing whatever I can on the layout. One job I've been doing is evaluating every loco we used at Stevenage.... identifying any issues which need attention. This was an easy one to identify! Luckily I had found and saved the screw and managed to get it back together. I have invested in a rolling road and all's now good with 6165 again.
  11. They are not cheap but excellent quality - I had one in the garden of my last house and have only moved house so that I could get a bigger shed! Google : CRANE GARDEN BUILDINGS
  12. I'm pleased to announce that Addison Road was a triple winner in the recent LNWR Challenge. The structures & infrastructure won the structures section. And Peter Warren won the rolling stock section and the RMweb popular vote for his scratchbuilt Oerlikon set.
  13. It appears that Twickenham MRC's ADDISON ROAD infrastructure & equipment is the winner of the structures section in the L&NWR challenge. And Peter is a double winner in both the rolling stock and RMweb popular vote sections. Congratulations to Peter and his team.
  14. Congrats to Peter Warren in winning the rolling stock section of this competition. Peter is the group leader of Twickenham & District MRC's 'ADDISON ROAD' O gauge project. You can follow the whole ADDISON ROAD story in the group's thread on RMweb.
  15. Hello Guy Thanks for your input. What about insulation? What do you know about this spray insulation I've heard about? I understand a professional comes and does it ….. know anything about this? Thanks again for your interest in my problem. Paul
  16. I have just had a new shed delivered and set up. I was quoted a very large sum by the shed manufacturer to insulate, line and power it. I want to hide the electrics in the frame - ie no conduit running along the walls. I want to insulate it and line it with 'nice' lining - nothing too cheap but not oak panelling! With my last shed I insulated it with big thick sheets of blue insulating foam bought from B&Q or similar. Someone told me that these days you 'spray' insulation foam - Is that appropriate? I assume I put the electricity in first and insulate after that. So here is my shed , how can I do what I want without bankrupting myself?
  17. We're off to the Milton Keynes show soon and no barriers are provided - time to buy some of our own …..
  18. My new workshop and/or layout room has arrived...…………… Two hours later and it now looks like this ……………. This new shed is not for storage of the present layout and it's not big enough to set up the whole layout, but it can be used to work on baseboards - up to four at a time!
  19. There has also been a lot of thought (and I mean a lot of thought!) given as to how best to present the layout at a show. Conclusions 1. A team of six operators is needed to take to a show. We will never be a 'cheap layout' and I feel we can totally justify six operators requiring accommodation, but we will always welcome 'drop-in' guest operators. 2. Priority given to keeping constant movement on the industrial. It is 100% steam and our motto is 'REAL WORKING STEAM IN 2004' 3. Two operators on the industrial at all times to speed up operation. This will allow us to abandon the absolute basic sequence and add extra interest by using the advanced sequence as much as possible, although this will need practice. 4. The use of infra-red throttles and radio microphones/headsets should allow one industrial operator to operate from the front of the layout with the second one dealing with fiddle yard issues. This will allow more of the team to get involved with industrial line operation as the very high backscene does limit operators to 6ft and above at the moment! 5. One operator can operate both China Rail tracks once the route selection issues are resolved. 6. One (experienced) operator can deal with the bi-directional line. We hope to introduce more variation (including light loco moves to/from the shed off-scene to the right) as & when we get more confident/experienced. 7. More 'complicated' moves - the layout is capable of far more 'interesting' moves on the non-industrial lines using the two crossovers on the scenic front, but we only attempted two of these in total at Stevenage and then only near the end of Sunday. We need to make these moves a lot slicker so that the set-up time doesn't unnecessarily delay movement on the front of the layout. This will come with practice and when the route selection is in place. 8. So four full-time operators at all times and (ideally) one spare to talk to viewers, and one other to go and get the teas and coffees!
  20. Latest news .. 1. We have postponed the Peterborough show until 2020 as it is only two weeks after Warley and our experience at Stevenage suggests that a two week gap between exhibitions is just not an option. 2. We have accepted an invitation to the Fareham Show on the first weekend in October - seven weeks before Warley 3. The deflectorless QJ conversion is now most likely to be 7186 (seen on the right) as the headlight set-up is closer to that of 6266 (the donor loco) 4. The new shed arrives tomorrow - hopefully!
  21. I would love to put in a direct link to the Addison Road layout thread on RMweb but either this new software is more complicated than the old one or I'm not as internet savvy as I thought I was - maybe a bit of both! Anyway, if you use the Google search option you will find the Addison Road thread quite easily. And, whilst I'm on the subject of Addison Road, let me say that, although it is a Twickenham and District MRC project, the club and the AR group have members far and wide - Staines, Woking, Watford and Boston and that's Boston, USA not Boston, Lincolnshire! So don't be put off from getting involved in this project just because you don't live in a TW post code. If you have been inspired by this thread and you would like to get involved with the project do contact Peter Warren who is our group leader. Although the model is nominally set in 1925 the group have very widely spread interests (including blue diesels!) - all welcome!
  22. Just to say that Addison Road has its own thread here on RMweb where you can trace its history right back to bare baseboards - and that's a story in itself!
  23. Hello Roger Many thanks - normal service resumed. Many thanks to Francis, Al and Roger for your input. Paul
