  1. I would love to put in a direct link to the Addison Road layout thread on RMweb but either this new software is more complicated than the old one or I'm not as internet savvy as I thought I was - maybe a bit of both! Anyway, if you use the Google search option you will find the Addison Road thread quite easily. And, whilst I'm on the subject of Addison Road, let me say that, although it is a Twickenham and District MRC project, the club and the AR group have members far and wide - Staines, Woking, Watford and Boston and that's Boston, USA not Boston, Lincolnshire! So don't be put off from getting involved in this project just because you don't live in a TW post code. If you have been inspired by this thread and you would like to get involved with the project do contact Peter Warren who is our group leader. Although the model is nominally set in 1925 the group have very widely spread interests (including blue diesels!) - all welcome!
  2. Just to say that Addison Road has its own thread here on RMweb where you can trace its history right back to bare baseboards - and that's a story in itself!
  3. Hello Roger Many thanks - normal service resumed. Many thanks to Francis, Al and Roger for your input. Paul
  4. Hello Francis Thank you for your interest in my problem Yes, had tried various resets under the advice/guidance of my resident Digitrax helper. But this morning I have used the link you kindly provided and went through the steps. I'm using a 402D throttle plugged directly into the DB150 with no loconet or track connections. I selected OP and pressed SWITCH - the screen went to SW 001 = t and would not respond to turns of the knob Paul
  5. I am no DCC expert, and expect that I will never be such, but I am trying my best to get a 'working knowledge' - enough to operate my Digitrax equipped exhibition layout. A problem has arisen and my resident Digitrax expert says that he has never experienced this 'fault' and even my dealer who is a Digitrax specialist is none the wiser. The consensus is that the DB150 is faulty and needs sending back to the USA for repair. The facts 1. I was trying to control a new loco on the r/h knob, but during the process the message 'IdLE' began to flash where the loco number appears 2. Changing handset makes no difference 3. There is no track voltage so the l/h knob is inoperative although the loco number is solid without 'IdLE' flashing. 4. The track power black dot below the r/h knob flashes on/off and was 'off' when this photo was taken. 5. Several solutions have been tried with no effect. These include pressing the 'pwr' key and 'Y+' key I cannot emphasise enough that I have tried two real Digitrax 'enthusiasts' who are totally bewildered by this - and they conclude that the DB150 is faulty. Does anyone have any thoughts?
  6. I regret that the artwork on Hornby's website does not show the detail of the working headlight but I can assure you that the location is accurate. The real Hogwarts Castle loco has a headlight exactly where shown on the Hornby model - I can't see if the detail of the headlight is authentic but the position is 100% correct.
  7. So, the dust has finally settled after the Stevenage show and thoughts turn to layout upgrades/improvements. I have two Bachmann QJ's numbered 6266 which can be annoying when you use DCC as one is 6266 and one is 6267 when calling them up. So re-numbering one of them is being considered. Here is 6266... (photo courtesy of Peter Haworth) If we are going to the bother of re-numbering why not go the whole hog and make other changes? Here is the #1 candidate...… (photo courtesy of Brian Hawkins)
  8. Hello I have a large roundy roundy layout (15 road fiddle yard and three separate tracks in) On advice I have used Digitrax DCC I have very little knowledge of DCC and TBH very little tech knowledge at all - I read the manuals and just don't understand the language used. I need route selection. So here is my problem ……………….. On advice I have installed two DTM30's. I have been told that each can handle 24 routes and each can deal with 30 points. I need more than 24 routes - hence two DTM30's let's call them BOARDS A & B - and I use PECO point motors. So as I see it routes 1-24 will be handled by BOARD A and routes 25 onwards will be handled by BOARD B My question is can any given point be linked to both BOARD A & B ? I have been told that if a given point is included in the 30 points controlled by BOARD A then it cannot also be part of the 30 points controlled by BOARD B - that doesn't make sense to me, is that true? Apologies that my tech knowledge/understanding is so poor- as I have said, I do read the manuals and simply don't understand the language
  9. Does anyone ( not necessarily just model railway enthusiasts ) actually still use a garage to keep a car in?
  10. Any progress? I model China in 2004 - just the last QJs and industrials - and so am very interested anything steam era in China/HK. Here's my thread...……………... http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/87250-beijiao-a-chinese-ho-exhibition-layout/?hl=beijiao
  11. As regards a home for your project, I agree that a shed or garage is better than an attic..... assuming you have the space/money. Personally, I have just moved house just so that I could get a bigger shed (from 14x8 to 24x10) - a bit extreme but worth it.
  12. Thanks to both of you. The thing about China is that they tend not to mess about. If they want to redevelop an area they just get on and do it …… knock everything down and put up row upon row of identical blocks.....which made building the layout so much easier. Once I had developed a 'style' all I had to do was repeat, repeat, repeat. I could never have built 20+ feet of buildings if each one had been significantly different If anyone wants to see how the layout developed I do have a thread on rmweb ….. http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/87250-beijiao-a-chinese-ho-exhibition-layout/?hl=beijiao
  13. May I request some feedback on my Chinese HO layout BEIJIAO please. First of all let me say that the layout ran much better on Sunday than Saturday and so apologies to those whose visit coincided with the 20 minute complete shut down on Saturday afternoon - we now know why it happened and it won't happen again - hopefully! I am not seeking praise just genuine impressions to help us make a better display next time. Too few trains? Too main trains? Too fast? Too slow? In particular I have received some comments about the layout frontage being grey - some have thought that a contrasting colour would be better. May I suggest that thoughts are sent to me in a PM rather than clog up this thread. I genuinely want your thoughts - good or bad!
  14. Having looked at the video again I just wanted to explain why you keep seeing the same train time and time again. The video was taken on Saturday afternoon and we were having serious DCC issues. Consequently at that time I decided that it was better to keep one reliable train running continuously on each circuit rather than try to run a more varied but potentially unreliable service. A post-show meeting in the pub on Saturday night resulted in some changes to operating practice that in turn resulted in more variety and more reliability on Sunday.
  15. The new shed is arriving soon and the concrete base is going in today.....................
  16. A three volume video of the CMRA show was made by a visitor - we feature in volume two from 4.40 to about 11.40.....
  17. Have just about recovered from the CMRA show ...... here are a couple of photos taken by a visitor - I took my camera but had no time to take any photos! Firstly a shot showing our new 'tag line', our new motto if you like - REAL WORKING STEAM IN 2004! Some steam action on the bi-directional …… And lastly a shot of the crew standing outside the hotel. In order Martin, Ruth, Gordon, Peter, Al and Bob.
  18. Many thanks for posting your excellent videos, partly because as an exhibitor myself I hardly saw any of the other layouts despite being there for the whole time and partly because you took some fantastic shots of my own layout - zooming in to detail that is hard to see with the naked eye at an exhibition.
  19. Again please excuse my ignorance/confusion/stupidity ........................... My point is that I only ever considered humidity a problem because the layout will store in an outside garage, I would never even thought there could be an issue if I could store the layout inside my lounge (for example). But my readings seem to imply that a 'normal' house can be just as humid if not more humid than outside. I checked again at 8am and the garage and outside in the open backyard were both at 67% and inside the house was 75% and so based on these readings the layout would be better off in the backyard under a roof just to keep the rain off that sitting in my lounge. Again I can only ask (yet again) - am I missing something (like a brain?) ? I am genuinely confused Hello again John The layout basically fills an XLwheelbase transit van so that would be nearly as big as the garage
  20. I really, genuinely am not trying to be difficult or stupid, but ……………………….. I have just gone into the back yard and the humidity meter shows 59% …. it also shows 59% in the garage …………. but in the ground floor of my house it shows 64% and in the unoccupied bedroom/landing area on the first floor it shows 69% So I wouldn't even think of dampness issues if I stored the layout in my living room but that seems to be more humid than outside in the yard - I am totally confused. Yes, my wife and I have been sitting in the living room this evening but upstairs it's even more humid.
  21. Not quite, but damp course and new roof to be done whilst I'm away.
  22. The up home signals for Kensington South Main were on a gantry squeezed in under t Time for a bigger clubroom???? Joking aside, this is an amazing project.
  23. Gentlemen, your advice is appreciated and will be acted upon. However the layout is in the shed now, all 12 boards, and they take up most of the space and moreover the scenic boards are too heavy for me to move by myself . So no medium term solutions can begin until the layout is removed. That will happen Jan 11-13 when it's at Stevenage, what I have been experimenting with is a short term solution until my builder can action your recommendations in 10 days. Thank you both for your input. Paul
  24. Here's some details of the Chinese HO layout being exhibited by Paul Stapleton and T&DMRC helpers.
  25. In addition to club-owned layouts, many individual T&DMRC members have layouts on the exhibition circuit. This year's CMRA show in Stevenage will see two T&DMRC members' layouts - one in American ON30 and one in Chinese HO. Hopefully we will be able to post photos of them shortly.
