  1. Happy Christmas/Sol Invictus/Mithras's birthday to all ERs. Son is simultaneously assembling Lego, playing Farming Simulator and watching the Back to the Future DVD. Who says males can't multitask? A quiet day ahead, the lad won't eat turkey so I have a small thigh joint and he has lasagne! His mum's coming over later. I bought a present for myself, a Bachmann GWR ROD, which has had a run out on the old oval with a rake of weathered PO empties. I shall have a beer or 3 later. Have a good day everyone. Pete
  2. I just saw this on BBC news site: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-norfolk-20836102 A great record of long service; bet he has some memories. Pete
  3. Slightly OT but the ex-PO coke wagon in the 2nd Radlett pic is interesting. It's 1962 and it hasn't seen a lick of paint under BR, still has faint vestiges of original lettering and appears to be a wooden solebar type. Pete
  4. "They were supposed to bring along a meal typical of their homeland. Matthew didn't actually get there as he went to Banff and Jasper for the long weekend. Not too sure what he would have taken though." A plate of cockles? Pete
  5. Anything by Iron Maiden? I haven't ironed anything for years. I live in jeans or combats with T shirts, ordinary shirts stetch over my tum so no creases show. M's school trousers have a sort of vestigial crease but a 12 year-old's trousers are never going to look smart anyway. I don't even have an iron at the moment, but there is an ironing board. If it didn't belong to the now absent other half I'd put a layout on it. Pete
  6. Another Roundhead then Ian? Pete
  7. "The adventures of Barry McKenzie" IIRC. I had the complete set (published as a book) once; I may still have it but haven't seen it since moving house 6 years back. "Yodelling down the great white telephone" was another of his euphemisms. Barry made it into the movies, in two very silly films. Pete
  8. I thought of putting Mickey Mouse as a write-in candidate until i realised he was going to get in anyway. Pete
  9. Over half our work is for developers rather than the council. We/they could set up as an independent contracting and consultancy unit but the up front capital required may be prohibitive. It's an option being looked at though. Pete
  10. Happy Birthday Ian! Welcome to the When I'm 64 Club. On a less happy note, I've just attended a meeting at which it was announced that our Unit is proposed for closure due to Council cuts. Fortunately for myself the various procedures and notice periods will take me almost through to 65, while still getting a redundancy payout. However it's a major blow for my 8 colleagues, most of whom may have to move away to continue in the profession. Pub at lunchtime, I think! Pete
  11. Can't see that at the moment as Flickr is blocked at work, but I remember seeing Gazelle. I was lucky enought to go to a CCF camp at Longmoor in 1963. I hated the Corps so only went to camp because it was there. We used the LMR train to and from Liss and had a day on the railway including workshop tour and driving experience on a diesel shunter (unfortunately I can't remember which). Looking for info on the shunters I just found this, from the same period: http://www.irsociety.co.uk/Archives/9/longmoor.htm#top Pete
  12. Possibly inspired by a coach that had been in close proximity to the Blaster Bates job known as "The shower of s*** over Cheshire". Pete
  13. Looks like a business seller so he may have got it all wholesale.
  14. Highlights of Cropredy 2012 just started on Sky Arts, bottle of Double Drop; that's me sorted 'til bedtime.

  15. I had Virol in the 50s, also the other main brand, Radio Malt, as featured in the Molesworth books, as any fule kno Pete.
  16. I believe the pilot loco was in response to the perceived threat from Fenians, who might try to derail the royal train. They would get the pilot instead, which then wouldn't clear the section and the main train would be stopped by signals. Pete
  17. You can have chicken pox twice; I did, as did a colleague at the same time, both confirmed by doctors. Itchy, but I believe less unpleasant than shingles. Best wishes for a quick recovery! Pete
  18. the poster for the new film proves there was a railway in The Shire: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/australiaandthepacific/newzealand/9549670/Middle-Earth-moves-to-Northumberland-in-The-Hobbit-film-posters.html Pete
  19. He's terminated it anyway. Pete
  20. The spits were probably going to Goodwood, there are others displaying there as well as the BBMF Pete
  21. Yesterday was Battle of Britain Day, hence the aircraft movements, The Lanc was probably heading for Biggin Hill, flying over Goodwood today. http://www.raf.mod.uk/bbmf/news/index.cfm?storyid=489F7435-5056-A318-A8D7A19F9D259302 Pete
  22. My late mother was prescribed Guinness when she was in hospital c1980. When I visited, the ward sister brought me one too!. Pete
  23. Looks like this one http://abugblog.blogspot.co.uk/2012/08/the-very-surreal-caterpillar.html If it's not moving, how do you tell which end's which? Put it in a bowl of flour and wait for it to f**t Pete
  24. Bid history shows an early automatic bid of £575 being furiously chased up, then a new bidder with zero feedback. For a bus. Insane. Pete
  25. Ian, my sincere condolences Pete
